DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

If Coach Meyer wants Billy Davis, I am totally on board.
Wait, Patricia was in Days wedding and is pure nepotism? Like his son in law and Earles grandson?

yes. i agree with that.

but that positive "sentiment" / benefit of doubt comes with the cache from the natty. i doubt day would be getting a "trust the coaches" bump otherwise.
According to all the Knowles cope; it was Day who fixed the defense after Oregon... Now their heads explode at this.

I hope they pay him more than Knowles just so there is even more gnashing of the teeth.

This reaction reminds me of when we got Will Howard.

There will be a lot of "Apologize." posts coming after Ann Arbor next year.

Analyze me. I defended Day as the best possible coach in the NIL/transfer era, was completely broken and resigned to the fact that Ohio State might need to move on after 11/30, enjoyed the hell out of the entire playoff run, and think this is more likely than not a good hire (but still really think it would be best if LJ Sr took this opportunity to retire).
I couldn't say it better. I trust Day and his hiring/firing more each year. But this one goes under the strict scrutiny category. Did we hire a guy for his rings and name? Or for actual coaching acumen with the potential downside of not being able to recruit?

I think that is where we are going unless I am off on left field. I trust Day, but have substantial trepidation on this hire. I would love to be wrong on that feeling.

I like the idea of a fresh set of eyes/new perspective that MP will bring. I also believe that he will be the best version of himself after being humbled and essentially out of work.

I also probably posted the exact same thing in the Bill O' Brien thread last year.
I think back to O'Brien on the topic. Let's bring in an ex-Patriot/NFL guy for clout. We know how that played out but Day more than made up for it with Chip. So I feel sort of dumbass questioning the move, but I am just worried about the culture fit and transition of our defensive scheme.

I don't paid for that though, so I will shut up, see what happens, and be pleasantly surprised if this works.

Not sure the link will work, but here's an interesting article from Fox Sports, about Patricia from 2016...leads me to believe that Matt was maybe more than just riding Belichicks coat tails

His name was mud so I think it was all acumen. Which I don’t question because the real issues are

1. Can he get along with others?
2. Does he have the patience to teach amateurs and go with boring solutions rather than exotic options that show off his skill?

I just can't imagine he comes in here filled with bravado acting like he allegedly did in Detroit. There's no way he doesn't know this is his rehab job, if he knocks it out of the park all is forgiven in the NFL.

The only thing I can think of as a possible issue is whether MP has the ability to run his defense at a level these collegiate players can understand and implement on a weekly basis while also being students. Even with NIL and the talent level of these kids, these are still collegiate players.

However, I am confident Coach Day will make sure any corrections are made during the course of the season. He knows he is the CEO and can point to changes he made during this most recent season leading to the NC.

I have always been a big fan of Coach Day and I ain't worried!

THIS
I don't get people holding his past digressions against him. He is coming to OSU to completely rebrand his image, he wants to get back in the NFL like Kelly. It would be asinine for him to come in like he was with the Lions. He strikes me as being much different in his demeanor now. Time will tell, but I can see him being on his best behavior for OSU, and heading back to the NFL in 1-2yrs. And putting multiple players in the NFL. He was the guy going to the Combine, going to Senior bowl and going to Pro Days, that type of evaluation can be great for the team

Perception is reality until you change reality. It can absolutely be done and I get your points on Patricia coming in for a slice of humble pie/brand change. Not exactly the same scenario, but Sark did it with Bama/Texas and I am really impressed with that comeback. But are we trying to replicate what tcun did with Wink Martindale in terms of NFL success translating to CFB, or is this really the best hire? I don't get paid millions to make that call, but it seems like almost the exact same move and maybe it works.

I'll go in with a clean slate, I just thought it was an odd hire. If it works out for 1-2 years and he gets back into the NFL after keeping our defense elite, I would be thrilled. We have young defensive coaches that will step up when the time comes (MG, JL, Walton). If Patricia can transition us into that scenario, job well done. A good coordinator is gone in 1-2 years regardless, so that part does not bother me at all.
