Press Coverage: New Buckeye Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia Makes a Good First Impression, C.J. Hicks Moving to the Edge

Almost a month after Matt Patricia was hired as Ohio State's defensive coordinator, he got his first chance to speak with the Buckeyes' media on Friday.

Patricia and the Buckeyes' other nine assistant coaches fielded interviews after a Ryan Day press conference, giving us our first opportunity to get to know Ohio State’s new defensive coordinator. Some of Ohio State's best defenses in recent years have come when things are simplified schematically, and while Patricia is known for being multiple defensively, he expressed a desire to keep things simple for the players so they can play fast.

The bolded ^ That is really important for this new defense because over the amount of overturn that we're facing. Patricia can't be too smart for his own good with this new group even though that probably would've worked with last year's group. We have the ponies, let them run and not be confused by too many concepts.

One thing I found interesting in that coverage is that it seems like there is a pecking order of Styles (that one is obvious), Reese (super excited to see him play more) and then...Payton Pierce. I will admit that I somehow lost him in the shuffle despite being ecstatic when he committed, but that was basically a hand-picked selection by JL and I don't think he would be here if not for JL. Makes sense that he will probably see the field often, but kind of made me excited to see what he does this year.

In tandem with the LB comment, I will be interested to see if Patricia sticks with a more safety/nickel based defense like Knowles (my gut says generally he will), and if he has fronts with 3 LBs cued up (which could include Hicks on the edge) for the more power-based teams. We won't find out until Week 1, but I am curious to see how similar this defense looks to Knowles' defensive scheme.

Per Bill Landis at Rivals:
Hadn't pieced this connection together when Patricia was hired, but James Laurinatis said he's familiar with some of Patricia's stuff because he worked under Al Golden for a year at Notre Dame and Golden was Patricia's LB coach in Detroit. Said there was stuff Notre Dame did up front that he thinks might work out well for CJ Hicks if OSU goes down the road of using Hicks like a 3-4 edge some of the time.

Per Bill Landis at Rivals:

Pretty much a given when you look at his DC career. Trey Flowers was used a 2pt strong side edge and then a weakside 3pt rusher between N.E. and DET.

In *something* of a similar mold, Von Miller, Micah Parsons and Khalil Mack were off-ball LB's and 2pt edge rushers. Just helps to get those sort of bodies in different roles situations in Patricia's odd fronts.

“HE’S A GREAT TEACHER.” Larry Johnson has been impressed with Matt Patricia this spring. When asked about Ohio State’s new defensive coordinator on Tuesday, Johnson praised Patricia for how he educates players and prepares them for success.

“First of all, he’s a great teacher, a really great teacher. He makes it simple for players to understand what they’re doing and how to do it. There’s always a process to what we’re doing, and I think that’s really cool. I think the process, the orientation of the defense, has been really good.”

It appears – after five practices, at least – that Ohio State has had a much easier time learning from Patricia, who has benefited from Knowles’ installation but will implement his own flair as the offseason continues.

“I’m just excited. I want to teach. I want to mentor. But right now, I’ve got to learn. I’ve got to listen, I’ve got to learn, I’ve got to understand what all the great coaches that are here are doing fundamentally and what we did last year structurally that are really good and implement that moving forward,” Patricia said Monday. “And then do the best job to teach. I think that’s my job right now. With what we’re doing and when I see it, be able to teach it and get it across to the players and coaches. But right now, I feel like I’m the student. I’m learning and taking in as much as I can.

“And really trying to learn the kids, trying to learn their backgrounds, where they’re from and what they want so I can be that mentor, that teacher and help them along whatever path that is for them and constantly encourage them to do all that stuff they have to do every day and be consistent with it.”

Reading the various DB interview quotes this morning about Matt Patricia I can't help but see/apply the contrapositive as to Knowles. It's way early, but everything I've read from the coaches and players makes me think Day nailed this DC hire.
I’d have to agree regarding the surround sound on him. It seemingly is very positive.

It’s a bit ponderous how different that seems to be compared to some of the talk when he was announced. NGL, if there’s going to be some kind of delta here, I’ll take ‘better than what we were hearing at hire’ than the alternative.
