JIM KNOWLES NAMED A NOMINEE FOR THE 2022 BROYLES AWARD
Compared to where it stood last season, Ohio State's defense has made incredible strides in only 10 games in 2022, and first-year defensive coordinator Jim Knowles is receiving recognition for his role in the transformation.
On Tuesday, Knowles was one of several coaches nominated for the Broyles Award, given annually to the best assistant coach in college football.
In 2021, Ohio State's defense ranked No. 52 in total defense and No. 26 in scoring defense, allowing 366 yards and 20.9 points per contest. However, under Knowles in 2022, the Buckeyes rank No. 4 and No. 7 in those respective categories at 271.5 yards and 15.6 points per game through 10 games.
Knowles' efforts, in addition to the continued work of Larry Johnson and the addition of Perry Eliano and Tim Walton, have also transformed the level of play for several players on Ohio State's defense.
Tommy Eichenberg, who is in the middle of what could be an All-American season, has certainly improved in the new scheme. In 10 games, he has collected 92 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, two pass breakups, one interception and a touchdown. Other Buckeyes to see a similar uptick in success for the Buckeyes this season includes J.T. Tuimoloau, Zach Harrison, Steele Chambers, Lathan Ransom and Ronnie Hickman, among others.
Knowles was named one of the finalists for the Broyles Award last year but lost to then-Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis. He will look to return as one of the finalists in 2022, as a top 15 list is expected to be announced by the selection committee later this month, with further trimming of the list taking place after that.
