DC Jim Knowles (Official Thread)

Copied from the team defense thread, just cuz.

Team defensive rankings as of today, after 7 games:

Total defense - #2 in the NCAA, 239.9 ypg

Scoring defense- #5 in the NCAA, 14.86 ppg

Rushing defense - #8 allowing 90.9 ypg; #6 with 2.85 yards per carry

Pass defense - #10 in pass defense efficiency at 108.76, #3 in yards per game at 149.0

First downs allowed - #1 with 83 total, also #1 with 11.86 per game

Third down conversions allowed - #2 with 24.5%

Fourth down conversions allowed - #6(tie) with 25.0%

Tackles for loss - #13 at 7.3 per game

Sacks - #28(tie) with 2.71 per game

That’s currently a top-5 defense in the major categories, the other teams that are also top-5 in those categories are Illinois, Georgia, and TTUN.

It’s great to have a defense that gets a stop on 75% of 3rd and 4th downs. Thank you, Coach Knowles.

the key on 3rd downs is to the do work on1st and 2nd downs. If they can keep PSU in 3rd and long situations it makes it really difficult for teams to convert bc of the pass rush getting home on slower developing patterns and different looks Knowles gives opponents.

Going back 4-5 years, I feel like OSU got to a point where they felt they could just line up and beat people with their superior talent and vanilla looks. This is what we do, see if you can beat it. They were missing that element of surprise and made it really easy for opposing QB's to get a read pre-snap. I feel this has been the biggest difference in Knowle's defense vs. OSU defenses of recent past and I Love it!!!

If the Ryan Day/Jim Knowles duo stays together for 8-10 years, I could absolutely see a run of about 3 or more national championships in that time. Knowles is just getting started. This season is a special one, so it's hard to look ahead, but next year's defense is going to so nasty! Especially is Tommy comes back, which I doubt he does.

Of the 7 opponents have we faced an offense that ranks in the top 30 or 25 in PPG and/or YPG? What about top 50?

Are you asking "Who have they played?"

I'm pretty sure LJB and I have answered that question elsewhere, but to recapitulate the high points here:

It is not Ohio State's fault that none of the teams on their schedule to this point are particularly good on offense. There are a metric butt-ton of FBS teams that can say that though. Dozens of teams have yet to face a really good offense. Most will have that chance at some point in the season, but some will go the full season without having played anyone with a pulse. So how to compare them? By comparing them to everyone else their opponents have played.

The Silver Bullets' Differential Scoring Defense is 0.538. That is a very good number. It's not quite elite, but I would be willing to bet that for a team in its first year of using a brand new scheme, it's among the highest ever. I am still not running differential numbers for all of FBS, but in the years that I did, that DSD number would have led all of FBS as often as not. When you further consider that their rigidity is > 0 (17.7), meaning that their DSD is better against better competition, then it is very safe to conclude that this defense is excellent.

This analysis did not take into account the number of points that have been scored against the back-ups in garbage time.

I agree with you, Mendensa, of course, that critical to getting turnovers on downs is the work on 1st and 2nd and these guys are doing it. I have no idea what the statistics are or whether my recollection can be statistically supported, but last year and earlier I remember us consistently doing a pretty solid job on 1 and 2 and then missing/folding on 3rd; sometimes like all the way down the field. That’s frustrating and exhausting for a defense and, as we’ve now seen, is more about coaching and scheme than about the players.

How about how his group played today? They had some stumbles but it seemed to center around the freshman JK for a bit of it. 4 more turnovers, the JT coming out party, the return of Tyliek to the stat sheet, continued great LB play and we scored on Defense again. They gave up 31 points which is the worst of the year by far and had some issues in the tackling department so I put it on that instead of the pass defense. Could have been a little better in the rush D department vs the Manball stuff and we'll have to make a change or two for that with who's coming up. All that said, this man has made us all believers in that side of the ball again and they saved our coaches bacon today who tried to give shit away on the Offense.
