Cotton Bowl: Ole Miss 47, Texas Tech 34 (Final)

Tech is so predictable. When I used to bet (I stopped because I started taking Buffalo at Eastern Michigan waaaaaaay to seriously), I made a bunch of my money on Tech. Recipe for a typical TTU season:

1. Schedule 2 D1AA teams for OOC and two mid-majors. Struggle against 2 of them despite huge point spreads. Bet on Tech's opponent to cover. People wonder wtf? but they have such a good offense?

2. Pick up steam in Big 12 play. Promptly blow their wad in a huge night home game against UT or OU in an upset or near-upset where they play out of their minds.

3. Can't get it up for the rest of the season, especially in road games. Struggle against a couple crap teams for the rest of the way, and lose a couple convincingly.

4. Go to some mid-tier bowl (usually the Alamo or Independence) where they usually do decently. Guessing the wad they blew this year was epically huge and they still can't get it up.

I don't consider it a gimmick offense in the slightest. All I see is Mike Leacah doing an excellent job of attempting to get the ball to his playmakers in space, spreading the field with all of the WR's as well as confusing the defense with the different variations in routes. Thats just putting your team in the best position to win, good coaching.
Let's give Leach credit for putting the ball into the hands of his playmakers.

The lopsided talent difference between the O and the D really doesn't factor into it being gimmicky, just means that they don't recruit well on the defensive side of the ball.
Let's then dun Leach for not putting any playmakers of equal merit on the defensive side of the ball. Seriously, as fast as Tech drives can be you need excellence on defense. I don't buy the lack of recruiting argument either, as it is often the case that athletes come into college and get re-assigned to another position anyway. Hell, Crabtree wasn't a WR in HS.

I guess you can pretty much label any spread offense or any offense that doesn't run the power I, or any team that doesn't play defense well as a gimmicky offense under those terms.
It's not that they prefer not to do it, it is that they are incapable of doing so when needed. And, every team needs short yardage of one type or another during the game.

How many Tech QB's are getting it done in the NFL? What's that? None? Like I said... Gimmick.

I don't disagree about it "working" and being "good coaching" but, that's not evidence it's a gimmick. How does a team with a talent gap compete? Gimmick, that's how.

No... the triple option is a gimmick too....

Pretty much works like this - Does it work in the NFL? Yes? Not a gimmick. No? Gimmick.
Well then, we have different opinions on what a gimmick offense is.
