Cotton Bowl: Ole Miss 47, Texas Tech 34 (Final)

it'll sound like a copout, but it depends who's running it and who's defending it. the 'Fins were the only team to run it in '07. but several other teams ran it in '08. doesn't sound like a gimmick to me; it sounds like a trend.
They ran it in 07? I'm pretty sure they debuted it in week 3 vs the Pats.

I don't disagree that everything was a gimmick at its inception....

there's a difference between schemes and plays and formations though. You don't see a triple option in the NFL.... it's a gimmick.

That word "gimmick" doesn't mean it can't be successful, or that it is without value, or even that a "traditional" team should wholly avoid it at all costs. I'm speaking more generally....

hm, i get you there. i always thought that the reason they don't run the triple option in the NFL is because they are paying their QBs way too much money to have them out there getting their heads knocked off on keepers. it seems to me it's more an economic and forward thinking decision, but then i guess the argument could be made the other way too...

If you're gonna treat your QB as if he's a RB.... well.. who cares then? It's not like RBs make chump change.

Does it really matter?

I'm not upset about this discussion or anything, I just don't see why it matters.
It doesn't. Just something to do. :wink2:

That's the thing, though. If it continues to succeed next year, after they've had an offseason to pick it apart, then it will be more than a gimmick, imo.

If the vikings staff has Peterson run this formation frequently as the QB, they should be relieved of their duties.

So you guys were always arrogant pricks, eh? :p

By then Bama should be up 21-0.

Or down 21-0. ROLL TIDE!

the Ravens were running an unbalanced line this year with and extra OT lined up at TE and pulling the opposite guard. is that a gimmick? well, Tressel used that formation with considerable success in The Game three years ago.

I don't recall OSU using an unbalanced line like the Ravens did (G-C-G-T-T). I thought it was the typical T-G-C-G-T look but with an over-sized TE in Tyree.

Could be wrong on that, though.

weve seen it from time to time. tyree played te, though im not sure if they went heavyon the tackles. it was a mainstay of the coop era, especially the pace/stringer heavy line...
