To catch this thread up on what's been going on with the Crew (and MLS):
The Crew has gone 4-1-1 in league play in MLS and 2-0 in the U.S. Open Cup. Columbus sits atop the Eastern Conference, 8 points ahead of NYRB, and 2nd place in MLS, 6 points behind LA with a game to play. We're also in the "final four" stage of the U.S. Open Cup, with current MLS bottom dwellers DC United, Chivas USA, and Seattle Sounders making up the other 3 teams. The Crew could figuratively pull of a "treble" with the Open Cup, Supporter's Shield, and MLS Cup. They're the run-away favorite at this stage to win the Open Cup.
The biggest Crew news is that we're getting some serious help from our bench. Emilio Renteria is now starting and has 4 goals on the season, with goals in back-to-back starts (Lenhart is out with a broken nose). 4th round pick Shaun Francis played 90 minutes in his first MLS start last night, replacing healthy scratch Gina Padula, and looked like a regular out there. Emmanual Ekpo is FINALLY getting the minutes he deserves, and newby Leandre Griffit needed only 3 minutes as a substitute to get his first MLS goal last night in his first appearance in a Crew uni.
It's transfer season in international soccer, and MLS has pulled in some big names. NYRB made the biggest move, signing Theirry Henry, which is being regarded as the 2nd biggest signing in MLS history (behind David Beckham). Word on the street as that they're also about to land current Mexican national team captain Rafael Marquez. Would be the biggest international signing for a defender in MLS history if that would go down. Chicago signed Mexican natty F Nery Castillo, who if he can return to his former form, could be a HUGE pick-up for them.
It's a great time to be a Crew supporter! Next match is in LA vs Chivas USA this coming weekend. Next home game is August 21st against Colorado.
