Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Tying goal was total bull. Not only was there the handball, but the free kick was taken illegally, as the US Soccer Federation admits in the Referee Week In Review. MLS are conspiring against the small markets extra early this year, I suppose. At least last season they waited until the playoffs...

I don't know what's going on with MLS refs this year, but they're really dropping the ball. Two terrible no-calls that resulted in that goal. The Crew have to do better at killing the clock late in the game though or they wouldn't have had to depend on the ref making either one of those calls.

The CONCACAF Champions League is down to Cruz Azul and Pachuca in the championship final. Funny is that those are both the teams that beat the Crew during the tourny. Makes one feel better about the losses.

3 THINGS TO KNOW

  • Columbus avenge 2009 postseason loss to Real Salt Lake
  • The Crew win despite just one shot on goal
  • Will Hesmer shines late as Crew remain unbeaten

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? A win is a win is a win.
As Bill Murray said in Meatballs: ?It just doesn?t matter.?
It just doesn?t matter that the Crew had only one shot on goal against Real Salt Lake in the rematch of the 2009 Eastern Conference semifinals won by Real Salt Lake in an upset.
It just doesn?t matter that the Crew had to hold on at the end thanks to the goalkeeping of William Hesmer, who could have slept for 75 minutes but made three saves in the final 15 minutes.
All Crew coach Robert Warzycha knows is the Crew (2-0-1) are off to a better start than 2009, when they opened the defense of their MLS title with a 0-2-5 record.

The Crew beat the New England Revolution 3-2 this weekend at Crew Stadium thanks to a goal in 2nd half stoppage time by Robbie Rogers. Columbus remains one of 2 unbeaten teams in MLS, currently 3-0-2 and 2nd place in the East, despite playing a league-low 5 MLS games thus far this season (in large part because the Eastern Conference is really baaaaaaad this year... as in I think the 6 worst teams in the league are all in the East type of bad).

Clear your plans for May 29th. Home game of the year. The Los Angeles Galaxy are the toast of the league this year (even Columbus is playing catch-up to them) and they're playing some amazing footie right now. Even the Crew's marketing folks are calling for a "blackout the galaxy" for this game.

To catch this thread up:

- Crew won 1-0 at home against Chivas this past weekend, thanks to Marshall getting pulled down in the box off of a restart in the 89th minute. Guille converted the penalty kick. 2nd straight game with a late-game winning goal. The Crew's in 2nd place in the East (1 point behind NY Red Bulls) and 3rd place in MLS currently.

- Crew play NY Red Bulls tomorrow night at 8pm on ESPN2. They'll have to play without GBS (1-game suspension for uncalled elbow in the Chivas game), Chad Marshall (US Mens Nat Team), Robbie Rodgers (US Mens Nat Team), and likely Gino Padula (still recovering from minor injury). Will be the Crew's first time in NYRB's new arena and NYRB is said to be favored to win this game despite the Crew being unbeaten on the season.

- The draw for this coming year's CONCACAF Champions League was today, and the Crew got a real favorable draw. Their group will consist of 1. Municipal (Guatamala), 2. Brujas (Costa Rica) or Joe Public (Trinadad & Tobago), and 3. San Juan Jabloteh (Trinidad & Tobago) or the winner of Santos/Toluca (Mexico). Other MLS teams represented are Seattle, Los Angeles, Real Salt Lake, and (most likely) Toronto FC.

- The Crew will be playing 5 MLS games in the next 16 days. Gonna have our depth tested. We won't have Marshall or Rogers back for 3 games at the least. With LA losing Donovan and Buddle likely until the World Cup is over, we have a great shot to overtake them for the lead in the race for the Supporter's Shield.

Just a reminder...

0-0, 30th minute.
