Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Crew lost 1-0 at Colorado tonight. I didn't see the game, but I saw the highlights. Between the last two games, Jed Zayner has given up the tying goal last game and the winning goal tonight. Frankie Hejduk can't get back into the starting lineup quick enough.

FYI, the MLS season will restart this weekend. If you've caught futball fever from all the World Cup action, The Crew host DC United Saturday at 7:30.

It is significant because it's Bob Evans Buck-a-Brat night. :wink2:

To catch this thread up on what's been going on with the Crew (and MLS):

The Crew has gone 4-1-1 in league play in MLS and 2-0 in the U.S. Open Cup. Columbus sits atop the Eastern Conference, 8 points ahead of NYRB, and 2nd place in MLS, 6 points behind LA with a game to play. We're also in the "final four" stage of the U.S. Open Cup, with current MLS bottom dwellers DC United, Chivas USA, and Seattle Sounders making up the other 3 teams. The Crew could figuratively pull of a "treble" with the Open Cup, Supporter's Shield, and MLS Cup. They're the run-away favorite at this stage to win the Open Cup.

The biggest Crew news is that we're getting some serious help from our bench. Emilio Renteria is now starting and has 4 goals on the season, with goals in back-to-back starts (Lenhart is out with a broken nose). 4th round pick Shaun Francis played 90 minutes in his first MLS start last night, replacing healthy scratch Gina Padula, and looked like a regular out there. Emmanual Ekpo is FINALLY getting the minutes he deserves, and newby Leandre Griffit needed only 3 minutes as a substitute to get his first MLS goal last night in his first appearance in a Crew uni.

It's transfer season in international soccer, and MLS has pulled in some big names. NYRB made the biggest move, signing Theirry Henry, which is being regarded as the 2nd biggest signing in MLS history (behind David Beckham). Word on the street as that they're also about to land current Mexican national team captain Rafael Marquez. Would be the biggest international signing for a defender in MLS history if that would go down. Chicago signed Mexican natty F Nery Castillo, who if he can return to his former form, could be a HUGE pick-up for them.

It's a great time to be a Crew supporter! Next match is in LA vs Chivas USA this coming weekend. Next home game is August 21st against Colorado.

ok so ManU completely outclassed the "class" of the MLS. Actually they embarrassed them.

So can soccer now to back to the corner so we can ignore it for another 3.5 years until the next World Cup?

That same ManU team lost to Kansas City recently - a bad MLS team.

The MLS All Stars have been playing world class club teams for 7-8 years in the All Star game. They've won, I believe, 5-6 of those games with another being a loss in a shootout to Everton. And that's surprising given that these guys only play together once a year in a sport where familiarity is important.

Added into the difficulty was that this was a mid-week game with the LA Galaxy having played a game the night before - so Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle were unavailable until the '70 mark.

So its only embarrassing if you know nothing about what's going on in soccer - which I take it you don't. No one is asking you to watch nor requesting your opinion.

We also know that Man U and probably most of the other teams that the MLS all stars have played in these all star games aren't exactly using their best lineups

The MLS all-star team is a collection of some of the best players in the league. Manchester United is a collection of some of the best players in the world. They're the NY Yankees of the soccer world in the world's best soccer league.

Read into the game what you will, but it's a simple all-star exhibition game with the main goal of "don't get hurt". And for what it's worth, if Jaime Moreno is an MLS all-star, BuckeyeMike got some time on the field in that game too.

This to go down August 3rd. Would be NYRB's 3rd DP.

Don't tell NYRB a secret. It won't be kept.

------------

And by the way, Matchday 18! Columbus @ Chivas USA tonight at 10:30pm on ONN.

The Crew travel to Philadelphia to take on the Union tonight at 8pm EST on ESPN2.

Off-topic, but the US announced their roster for the 8/10 friendly against Brazil. May have to revive that thread, though the ending to this cycle was pretty disappointing. :(

The Crew picked up the option on Warzycha's contract, meaning he'll be coach again next year. This is really a good thing. He inherited a team that had won the Eastern Conference, Supporters Shield, and MLS Cup. In his first year in charge we won the Eastern Conference and Supporters Shield. This year we seem to have the Eastern Conference on lockdown, but the SS looks to be out of reach and we're certainly not going to win the Cup. And then with all the money New York are throwing around and us likely losing Schelotto to retirement this offseason and Warzycha eagerly trading away young talent (Zayner) for draft picks, we could quite possibly not win the Eastern Conference next year either, meaning Warzycha will have fully dismantled the Crew dynasty!

Isn't it heart-warming to see someone get to see a job through to its completion? <3
