Columbus Crew SC (2008, 2020, 2023 MLS Champions)

Columbus Crew play their first game in CONCACAF Champions Cup play tonight at 8pm at Crew Stadium vs. Municipal (Guatemala). Should be a really good game. I'll be one of the 1,800 in attendance for this one

And then with all the money New York are throwing around and us likely losing Schelotto to retirement this offseason and Warzycha eagerly trading away young talent (Zayner) for draft picks, we could quite possibly not win the Eastern Conference next year either, meaning Warzycha will have fully dismantled the Crew dynasty!

Isn't it heart-warming to see someone get to see a job through to its completion? <3

The team's age is concerning, plus Warzycha's penchant for not playing young players (Duka comes to mind). Would have liked to have seen us get more for Zayner, but he wasn't the right back of the future for us. I'm worried that we'll lose both Rodgers and Ekpo during the off-season, which would change us completely tactically, seeing as though we won't have either of their speed on the flanks (though both are rediculously inconsistent). And I believe we'll be losing potentially 1-2 good players in whatever expansion draft there might be with Vancouver and Portland joining the league next year.

The good news is that Renteria is a future star on this team and Marshall is the best defender in the league. Despite the rising of the team's age, I'm optimistic about what our future rosters will look like. Bliss and his team of scouts have proved their worth a few times over scouting and bringing in some great players for trials, and we've gotten some valuable players late in the last few drafts (Lenhart and Francis come to mind).

Crew won the opening leg of the CONCACAF Champions cup 1-0 last night, despite some of the worst officiating I've ever seen. There were 3-4 legit PKs that could have been called and if it wasn't for some brilliant goalkeeping, this could have been a runaway train of a game. After the first 10-15 mins of this game, the Crew dominated Municipal and it wasn't very close.

Ekpo's goal in this one is a highlight reel gem. Weaves the ball through 2 defenders, plays the ball around a third, and goes side net on the keeper from around the top of the box

Despite the fresher Colorado Rapids taking the fight to the Crew early, Columbus scored two 2nd half goals to route the visitors 3-1 yesterday. Columbus is still 1st in the East with NYRB trailing by 6 points, and now is a mere 3 points away from MLS-leading LA Galaxy for the Supporter's Shield.

If anyone didn't see the third goal, it was a beaut. Schelotto free kick outside the box to Marshall, who heads to ball into the goal mouth directly to an unmarked Steven Lenhart, who buries the header into the back of the net.

Columbus will play Santos Laguna in Mexico on Tuesday for Matchday 2 of the CCL, then play Dallas FC at home on Saturday in Matchday 22 of league play. Word is Schelotto and Iro might not be able to make the trip to Mexico, due to a law that people near the end of the process of receiving their Green Card must stay in the country until the paperwork is finalized. Heard that the Crew is working double-time to get the necessary paperwork for them to be able to join the team and play on Tuesday.

Once again an MLS side is jobbed in Mexico. Fuck CONCACAF. I lost count of the number of set plays that Santos had due to "fouls" that were not called both ways. The disallowed goal in the 23rd minute would have changed the strategy for The Crew, and they probably would have had the legs to at least pull off a draw. How the hell can a player be waved onto the field by the head official, deliver the perfect cross for a goal, then have that goal taken away because he entered the field illegally? Instead of having a 1-0 lead to protect, The Crew had to play balls out to try to score the goal that they had already scored. By the 70th minute, they were running on fumes, and Santos was able to sneak in a goal in the 93rd minute against a short-handed Crew defense.

Overall, I was impressed with the way that The Crew played, considering that they played what equates to their second string in order to rest some of their stars for the MLS stretch run. Exciting yet very frustrating game to watch last night.

I'm still in shock over how that game ended. The Crew pretty much had the point in the bag. It was tough break after tough break all night and I pray that that final goal doesn't affect this team's play from here on out. Just a hard one to swallow. The good news is that that game is the toughest one the Crew will have in the first round of this tourny, and we almost got the draw despite half of our team resting in the States.

God bless Emilio Renteria. He earned his hard had out there last night. They literally had to cart him off the pitch he worked so hard... left everything out there. I LOVE how Emilio crosses the ball in... almost Guille-like. That guy that hit him should have been carded or sent off. He knew what he was doing throwing his arm back like that.

Same goes for that classy coach that Santos has. He should have been sent off for hitting Duncan and not giving him room to throw the ball in. I hope the Nordecke shows up in full-force for the rematch in Columbus. Ought to be "can't miss".

Warzycha plays for the draw at home against a lesser opponent, on the day we were honoring Lamar Hunt. Simply pathetic. Kevin Burns in for Schelotto with the score 0-0 at home? Seriously?

Columbus came from behind, down 1-0 thanks to an Andy Iro penalty in the box, to win 2-1 in OT against DC United in the US Open Cup semifinals. Iro scored in the 88th (deflection off of Marc Burch, but it was going in whether he touched it or not) to tie it up and Schelotto buried a PK 8 minutes into OT.

Columbus will play either Seattle or Chivas USA (who are playing right now) in the finals of the US Open Cup on October 5th (game place TBD based on the outcome of the other game). This is the first time the Crew has reached the finals since 2002, when the Crew knocked off LA for the hardware. Columbus will be the favorite against either team, but Seattle is arguably the hottest team in MLS right now and won this tourny last year.

Mendoza is signed with all the proper paperwork, he's off to DC cleared to play. Might be a pipe dream but I'm hoping to see Mendoza and Griffit in the lineup this weekend. United put out their "A team" for the US Open cup time to destroy them with an offensive minded group.

------------------Lenhart----------------Mendoza

-----------------------------------Griffit

----------Gaven------------------------------------Duka

----------------------------------Carroll

Hejduk-------------Brunner-----------------Iro---------------Francis

---------------------------------Hesmer

Run what's left of them into the ground.

Columbus beat DC United for the 2nd time in 4 days tonight, this time 1-0 in MLS play. Guille jumped on a miscue by GK Bill Hamid and Columbus played some really solid D. DC didn't have a shot on goal the entire game and Hesmer ends up with another clean sheet. 'Twas GBS's 7th goal of the year. He won't have an easier one the rest of the year.

The Crew are now TIED with the LA Galaxy for the league lead with 44 points (they drew against Chicago tonight), RSL trails by 1 point, and NYRB is 7 points back of Columbus in the east.

It was also annouced the other day that Columbus Crew icon Brian McBride will be retiring at season's end. Unfortunately, that means Brian played his last game in Estadia Crew on July 3rd, barring us facing his Chicago Fire in the playoffs. Otherwise, we will be facing McBride for the last time in the Windy City on October 8th.

To catch the thread back up...

The Crew has played 2 games since the last update: a 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS play, and a 3-0 win at home against Joe Public (of Trinidad & Tobago) in the CCL.

Didn't see the LA game so I can't comment much on it, and the Joe Public game was kind-of a snoozer. JP only dressed 15 players due to injury, visa problems, and two suspensions from card accumulation. 0-0 at half, then Columbus bounded out of the gates after the break, quickly going up 2-0 and getting a third later in the game with more subs than starters.

Two big games coming up... Columbus hosts Sigi Schmid at his Seattle Sounders in MLS play this Saturday at 7:30pm ($1 beers until halftime!), and follow it up with the can't-miss CCL rematch between the Crew and Santos Laguna (Mexico) this Tuesday at 8:00pm at Crew Stadium.

Seriously, that Santos game could be one of the better games of the season to see. Lots of bitterness on the Crew's part due to the reffing in the 1st leg, the teams are pretty darn even talent-wise, and if the Crew win, they're pretty much assured of making it to the 2nd round of the tourny (which would be huge to do with 2 games still to play in the 1st round).

------------
3 sidenotes:

- The Crew FINALLY signed Andres Mendoza last week and was the lone scorer as a sub agaisnt LA. Had a game-high 6 shots against Joe Public in ~65 min of action and pretty active in the attacking third. Impressed with some of his passes and looks natural with the ball at his feet, though he looked hurried on most of his shots.

-Joe Public MOTM: Leandre Griffit. Scored off a brilliantly placed shot that he created himself, delivered and controlled the ball well, and looked really dangerous all night. With Robbie Rodgers out still due to injury (surgery), would not be surprised to see him starting some games here soon in league play. Definetly earned more playing time with his performance last night.

- MLS announced it will go to 34 games next season (up from 30 games this season) due to the addition of the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps.

Warzycha said in a chalk talk meeting with the fans the other day that he doesn't play Griffit because "too many backpasses." At least he can pass the ball to the right team, unlike those useless sacks of shit Moffat and Burns who he plays every single game. Very tired of him being in charge of the crew.
