BTW you should stop by my World Cup 2010 thread. Got some good discussion going on over there.
Post padding and thread whoring? I like your style.

Yeah, I saw that this weekend. I'll be around. Can't wait for next summer.

Wow. That was incredible!

I can't believe Donovan put it over. It wasn't even close.

He's been so good this whole year. It was weird he was even going middle (and high???). He's usually a "low corner with some pace" kind of guy. He blasted that one.

The Expansion Draft for the Philadelphia Union just took place about half an hour ago. We were able to protect 11 players from Philly, but the staff left some surprising faces unprotected. The guys we protected:
G William Hesmer
D Eric Brunner
D Chad Marshall
D Jed Zayner (protected under Generation Adidas)
D/M Danny O'Rourke
M Brian Carroll
M Emmanuel Ekpo
M Eddie Gaven
M Adam Moffat
M Robbie Rogers
M/F Guillermo Barros Schelotto
F Steven Lenhart

And with that, Philly took 10 players. The one they took from the Crew ended up being their headline pick. I'm sad to announce that the Crew lost Alejandro Moreno to the Union today. I know the change of scenery will be really good for both parties and we lucked out that they picked him over players like Gino Padula (!) and team captain Frankie Hejduk (!!!) that were left unprotected, but he was a hell of a worker, a good soldier, and I'll always remember the goal he scored in MLS Cup last year forever. I know Seattle and Sigi Schmid really wanted him and would have taken him if we had left him unprotected in last year's expansion draft.

SUPER surprised with Philly's picks... like I thought it was a joke when they revealed the names. Still scratching my head about some of these...
G Brad Knighton -- New England Revolution
D Jordan Harvey -- Colorado Rapids
D Dave Myrie -- Chicago Fire
D Shavar Thomas -- Chivas USA (nice rock for the middle of the back line)
M Andrew Jacobson -- DC United
M Stefani Miglioranzi -- LA Galaxy (ex-Crew member, pretty solid def-mid)
M Shea Salinas -- San Jose Earthquakes
M Nick Zimmerman -- New York Red Bulls
F Alejandro Moreno -- Columbus Crew (solid starting striker)
F Sebastien Le Toux -- Seattle Sounders (could be a good pick up)

I thought it was a mistake for Warzycha to protect Moffat and Ekpo rather than Padula and Renteria. But that's water under the bridge now.

I appreciate what Moreno's done for us, but he was no longer useful. I was actually hoping we'd not re-sign him this offseason anyway, so to lose him in the expansion draft rather than a player who's actually useful to us is terrific. I couldn't be happier, really. We've made out like bandits.

I'm not sure what Nowak is thinking with some of those picks though.

He could have changed his diving tactics, which would have made him back to being our #1 target for Guille, but he needed a change of scenery anyways. Would have liked to have gotten something for him for his rights, but for Philly to have taken him instead of Padula, Hejduk, Renteria, Iro, etc. is really big for this club. Hopefully the team will address their need for a new forward with the superdraft... unless that is they end up not re-signing Guille... in which case they might look towards a play-making midfielder.

From what I've read, they went after players who would buy into their program and believe in the system they're installing in Philly. All and good, I'm sure, but it looks like they're not going to make the splash right away with players that teams like Chicago and Seattle did in their inagural years... which means they're likely going to be pretty bad for the first few years.

Wasn't anyone else getting the impression that Moreno was past his prime? Lenhart can fill in so I'm pretty pumped that's who we lost. What's really good is GBS being protected over some of the guys that are more likely to be around next season. Evidently the front office still thinks they can come to a contract agreement. That or they just don't want Philly to get him.

Crew fans were tired of Moreno's flopping antics. Late in the year, it was to the point where it was rediculous... especially in the home game in the playoffs. I mean, c'mon. Whether we lost Moreno or not, this team's glaring need for this offseason was going to be at forward.

Being that GBS is currently regarded as one of the top 5 or so players in MLS history, his rights in the MLS are worth a TON of cash. Definetly a no-brainer to protect him, whether he returns next year or not. I believe the Crew will hold his MLS rights for 2-3 years after his last game with the club... and we don't want to lose those rights. I've heard rumblings that Chicago wanted to poach him from us like they did McBride and Jon Busch.

Apparently, there's been a lot of discussion between GBS and the Crew contractually. What I'm hearing is GBS's camp originally wanted a 7-figure contract for him to come back next year, and the Crew was only offering around $250,000. GBS's camp was PISSED. Things have calmed down since then and they're negotiating somewhere in the $300-400k range last I heard. The Crew will NOT be using him as their DP this coming year, as they need to bring their payroll down in order to keep the younger guys signed with the team.

Until then, Guille's still under contract with the Crew up until Dec 31st, so the Crew have the first shot at him. If he's still unsigned after that, he's likely to go back to Argentina and play for his old ball club Gimnasia (where he got his first start). He always said he hoped to someday play for them again, but he'd hoped to play one more year for the Crew before going back.

Hopefully there's a happy ending to this story. I'll post more when I hear more.

More smoke from Crewture, titled "GBS Says Deal is Dead With Gimnasia. GBS Stresses Relationship With Crew."

Quotes from 2 Argentine newspapers and an internet chat with Crew GM Mark McCullers. Sounds good for the Black & Gold, but no deal yet.

A few days ago the Crew inexplicably resigned Jason Garey to a four (!) contract. Seems like an excessive move to me considering his contributions thus far in his career, but whatever.

But the exciting news is:
1. Guillermo Barros Schelotto is rumored to be applying for his green card, which certainly points to his staying here.

2. Soon-to-be-Hejduk-replacement Jed Zayner has been resigned to a four year contract. I'm very happy about this, Jed has really impressed me.

Only 78 days until opening day 2010!

And how could I forget? The 2010 MLS jerseys have been revealed!

I like the new road jerseys a lot. The new cut-outs on the home jersey are pretty weird, but at least they're maintaining the banana strip other than that.

I agree! The road unis are a step in a different direction (in a good way). The author of the article kinda slams the "captain's armband" look under the shoulders, but I like 'em! Looks sharp.

I like the banana kit too, though I wouldn't mind seeing something a little different next year (as long as they don't screw it up). Keeping the colors solid keeps you from noticing that silly piping in the corners. Symetry works, Adidas. Stick with that.

Crewture's mock up of a new road jersey:

In other news, the Crew re-signed D Jed Zayner yesterday to a 4-year contract and graduates from Generation Adidas to a full senior roster spot. Best back-up defender in the league, in my opinion.

No word on GBS yet, but he is officially out-of-contract with the Crew as of Jan 1. Seems inevitable he'll be re-signing for a 1-year deal though.
