Here is Dispatch article on the trade.

I still think we could've got something better out of it. I don't want us to keep going for draft picks and development players...those things get us no where. How many of the draft picks and development players we've taken over the years actually turn out to be something? I want to see some immediate impact players.

I do understand this was more of a cap move then anything else, but draft picks are not going to help this team get better. We just traded away a support guy for basically nothing.

:smash:

That's inaccurate when compared to the rest of the league. The CBJ draft and develop like shit, teams in this era still need to build through the farm system and drafting well and developing players.

Exactly...so draft picks don't help us out, haha. If we could actually get something out of development players then this would be a great trade.

Yes but the point remains. This franchise drafted like shit for years and didn't develop what they did draft.

For franchises like Columbus not try to emulate what others have done is stupid, but that's mostly why they are where they are....

Re: Vermette was in the first year of a four-year, $14 million contract. He is signed through the 2014-15 season with a $3.75 million cap hit.

I think the trade was just a "money decision", it had nothing to do with improving the team. The Blue Jackets just got out of a $12M obligation over the next 3 1/2 years.

Yep, the deal was about saving almost $4 million per year to use for players who are at least a little more cost-effective than Vermette, who has decreased in production each year since he had 65 points. He simply hasn't been that great for over two years, and he hasn't been close to worth that contract since he signed it.. solid player, but the money is more important to a team getting ready to rebuild.

The picks aren't a bad thing.

Jeff Carter traded to the Kings for defensemen Jack Johnson and a conditional 1st rounder. Glad we just traded away our top 2 center's in the past 2 days...

Brassard and Johansen the top 2 now (Vermette was playing like shit anyways).. needed Jack Johnson more than Carter imo anyways. Good shot, tons of upside, immediately the best player not named Nash on the team, best defender easily.

I agree that we needed JJ more than Carter. We definitely needed to beef up the defense, but in doing so I just hope we didn't destroy our offense ability too much. Vermette was playing like crap this season, but he was still our best guy on the faceoff by far. Could have the best defense, but you still need score 2-3+ goals a game.

I am very glad the front office is making moves and trying to make a difference. We are getting a ton of draft picks out of this, but once again we won't see those benefits for years to come (or if ever in the Jackets case). I still think there will be another move or two before the deadline comes. I'm still hoping they go out and get a top tier goalie...but that might be wishing for too much.

I also don't see Nash going anywhere now.

So we effectively traded the 2011 overall 7th pick, and a third round pick, and Voracek, for Jack Johnson and a first round pick...likely not to be as high as the one we traded away last year.

I'll take that, honestly!!!

Jack Johnson can skate...very underrated. This is a terrible trade for LA!

They couldn't score with him, so what the hell difference does it make? They've scored the 5th fewest goals in the league, but given up the most, so they really suck at both ends.

Fuck Michigan. I hope Umberger breaks him in practice.
