Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Sanford is also standing tall today.

If Mason is in goal this is at least a 4-1 game going into the 3rd.

EDIT I'm also now pissed off at the prospect of trading Nash. I hope that he still wants to be in Columbus at this point after the way that McConnell, Howson and Priest have completely mishandled things. He's not a captain, but he is the kind of player that you can build around if you have half a brain.

I could be wrong here; however, I wouldn't blame the McConnells. I don't believe that they did anything wrong except (maybe) hire the wrong guy to run the team. I haven't heard anything about either McConnell actually making actual "hockey decisions". In addition, if it wasn't for John H. McConnell, Columbus would never have gotten the expansion NHL team in the first place.

The McConnells aren't really to blame for the initial hires, but they've stayed with Howson too long. When Howson was hired he was considered a rising star in NHL circles so by that, at least, it was a solid hire. I do think they pulled the trigger on Hitch too quickly too, but that was more situational than strategic IMO as well.

At this point I really do think the CBJ keep Nash unless someone dumb (Toronto) mortgages the future to get him. No, Nash isn't Yzerman in the locker room and he's not Gretzky on the ice, but he's still the best player on the CBJ.

Nash has been terrible as a captain. He should be wearing the "A" and scoring goals. We've made him out to be more than he is, which isn't really fair to him or the team.

I agree with this. It would be awfully tough to strip him of the "C". It would be a slap in the face and don't see that happening. This is unfortunately, why I think he needs to go. That and the contract. He's very good player and a good guy. Just not a superstar and a leader, as his salary warrants.

Rick Nash, at the center of this year's deadline intrigue, may not be going anywhere until the summer. (Kathy Willens/AP)

Not much movement happened over the weekend (below are some thoughts on moves that were made), but the early talk on TSN this morning was that it looked as if Rick Nash was not going to be moved today, that the Blue Jackets were not hearing offers that were big enough to sway them from surrendering their captain and, unless someone comes up with a big enough package of players, prospects and picks, he would be staying with Columbus for the rest of the season. The thinking was that they?d conduct an auction for him again around the draft, when teams would be more likely to offer more. Then, agent Joe Resnick told TSN that Nash ? who has a no movement clause in his contract ? wouldn?t be expanding the short list of teams he?d agree to go to in the offseason, the clear implication being that his client didn?t want to drag this process out, that he was impatient to get on with his career now ? and play for a team that is going to the playoffs. But a deal like this has to work for everyone and what the Jackets have heard up until now isn?t working for them.

Samuel Pahlsson is going from 30th place to first as the Columbus Blue Jackets have reportedly traded the veteran checking center to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a pair of fourth-round draft picks.

Pahlsson, 34, will be re-united with good friends and fellow Swedes Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin in Vancouver, where he joins a team that has 87 points and is currently first in the Western Conference. Pahlsson had 11 points in 61 games with the Blue Jackets this season. He was averaging 15:02 of ice time per game and winning better than 51 percent of his faceoffs.

"I guess it's nice; it's been a tough run for us (in Columbus) and I just hope I have some good game left," Pahlsson told TSN. "I hope I do; don't see any reason why I couldn't do it again."

The Canucks are Pahlsson's fifth team. He started his career in Boston in 2000, but moved to Anaheim after 17 games and played with the Ducks until 2009, when he was traded at the deadline to Chicago. Pahlsson signed a three-year contract with the Blue Jackets on July 1, 2009.

Pahlsson won Olympic gold with Team Sweden in 2006 and was a finalist for the Selke Trophy in 2007, when he won the Stanley Cup with Anaheim.

In Pahlsson, the Canucks are getting a player that can help their bottom-six as well as their fifth-ranked penalty kill (86.3 percent). Pahlsson averaged nearly two and a half minutes of shorthanded ice time with the Blue Jackets this season.

Remember, too, that the Canucks added forward depth at last year's deadline by acquiring Maxim Lapierre and Chris Higgins. Both players played key roles in Vancouver's run to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

I honestly don't think that any honest CBJ fan is going to hold it against Nash if he asked to be traded. Who would want to play for this Mickey Mouse outfit??

Howson is a tool. If he actually came out and said that then he is a bigger idiot than I thought he was. And I thought he was a Kraken sized idiot.

He said it and he also said he told Nash that they would try and do it but only if they get something in exchange that set them up for the future.

I think at this point you strip Nash of the "C" and see if he responds like a real leader or continues to quit with the rest of the team he's supposed to be leading.

I think it's been pretty well established that Nash isn't a leader. He's a great player under the right circumstances and it's management's responsibility to put a competitive team around their best player.

Howson has mishandled everything up to this point, from contracts to personnel. He's not "defending" the team. He's trying to deflect anymore criticism coming his way. Even if Nash said "this team sucks I want out. Make it happen!!!!" I don't agree with putting it out there publicly. Keep that stuff in house. He's just making an already pissed off fan base more pissed off.

It's mind boggling that he is still employed by this organization. Simply mind boggling.
