Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

No heart my ass.

I was at that game, as I have been to all the home games, and that was the hardest I've seen the CBJ play in a long time.

I have NEVER seen a team want a game more, and not win...and yet even getting down by two goals twice, they refused to quit. Dallas' goalie made amazing save after amazing save. What more could we do?

The ONE outstanding part was Mason. He was bad. At one point he had given up 3 goals on 15 shots. And many of those shots were easy stops. He gave up 2 really soft goals...and then one that was a defensive screw up, that should have never happened, and was the only time anybody but Mason played poorly tonight. The first line was awesome. All the lines did a great job getting scoring opprotunities, while at the same time taking a ton of pressure off of Mason.

That was as easy of a game a goalie can have, except for that one turnover, which still many goalies in the league would have stopped, and yet...3 goals? What the hell. 90% of the goalies in the league would have only given up 1 goal that game. The rest maybe 2. There is no other goalie currently in the NHL that gives up 3 goals in that game. There has to be goalies right now playing college hockey, or in the AHL, that would have done a much better job.

I'm sorry, but Mason's time here in Columbus needs to come to an end. We need a new goalie, BADLY!

Mason has a 88.3% save percentage, good for 33rd in the league.
Mason has a 3.34 goals against average, good for 33rd in the league.
Only one goalie in the NHL has given up more goals this season.

And the worst stat...he is winless in six starts.

He does not deserve to start against Detroit on Friday. I don't care that our top two backup goalies are hurt, put Corbeil in there. Can he do worse???

I agree that they look better than ever and have played hard, but they need to stop having key lapses on defense. The goal Benn scored tonight could have and should have been prevented from even being a shot on net.. and three different players could have and should have knocked him off the puck - at the very least, they should have tried to knock him off the puck. They watched him score that goal.

The first game they play for 60 minutes will be their first win. It's been clear since after the Calder season that Mason isn't going to steal any games.

Steal a game? STEAL???

Have half a pulse as a goalie and you win that game. That's as 60 minutes as it gets. As I said before, that Benn goal was weak. Bad turnover. If you want to say they played 59:55 seconds then, because they got caught on a turnover during a line change and then didn't put a hit on Benn, then fine. But the amount of hits THEY did put on guys far outweighs the one time they didn't. I didn't look at stats, but they had to outhit Dallas tonight, had to! They were faster to the puck, more physical, and flat out wanted it more.

As I said before...that was the best I've seen the Jackets play in awhile, looked like they were really gelling, more so than any time this year...and yet still, nothing. If we create as many scoring chances as we did tonight, then we will score 3 or more goals almost every time. All we need is a goalie that doesn't give up three goals EVERY FREAKING GAME! Even this one, in which he was rarely tested.

But the lapses like the Benn one have been losing the games for them this season. They need to stop those. That one possibly cost them the game as well. Mason hasn't been great, but the defense needs to improve. Scoring chances are worthless if they don't start capitalizing on them. Mason is a scapegoat, deservedly so, but the entire team needs to start doing what they're supposed to be doing better.

These bastards just find a way to lose. If it's not Mason, it's the offense. If it's not the offense, it's the defense. They are to the point of inventing new ways to suck.

Suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

I believe the worst start in NHL history is 11 games by the 1940s era NY Rangers.

Mason is bad, but he isn't the reason this team has started this way. The defense has been coughing up the puck like it's their job in the first few games. Neutral and own zone turn overs have been happening WAY too often to blame Steve Mason.

This team just sucks. That's all I can come up with.

Maybe they steal one against Ottawa on Saturday, but that's at their place.

I'd also like to point out they have 40 shots but only 2 goals.

I didn't get to see the game, but in the past when that's happened there have been quite a few shots from the perimeter with no one in front of the net.

If they keep getting the effort that gives them 40 shots, eventually that will translate into more goals. Once this franchise realizes that Kris Russell and Tyutin aren't NHL-caliber defensemen, the team will be immediately better as well.

That's not to excuse Mason - sometimes a goalie has to bail his team mates out and he isn't capable of doing that.

There was no bailing out needed here. He was so bad that the team had to try and bail Mason out. Of their 40 shots, over half of them were scoring chances.

And for what it is worth, Russel and Tyutin played really well. I think you over exaggerate their lack of talent.

Tyutin isn't that bad. He's being relied upon to do more than he's capable of. Not his fault the GM has mostly ignored defense.

Russell is fucking terrible. Has the tools but no toolbox.

Bert's glove is bigger than Russel's entire head

the CBJ didn't play horribly, they absolutely must stay out of the box.

The 4th goal (3rd PP) is on Mason. He has to stay in position and not worry about the bullshit right in front of the net.
