Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Well, hopefully David Savard can be as good in the regular season as he has been in the preseason. Wiz has to be smarter.. but eight games seems a little absurd. Preseason + 10% of the season for retaliating against a known instigator?

On the lighter side....

....do you think the NHL has too many "sexy ice girls"?

I don't think so either.

Very excited about this season in Columbus. More excited than I think I have been in any of the previous 10.

Can't wait to see what this line up can do. Its BS that Wis is out for the first 8, but in the grand scheme of things it won't be a big deal.

Hopefully they get off to a fast start tomorrow against the evil Predators!!

Just askin' ... is there any reason to be optimistic that the goal tending will significantly improve this season?

Note: Serious question as I have not read that much about the Blue Jackets this summer.

Nope...it all rests on Mason. He had a great preseason. But the CBJ are thin beyond him. Garon was better than either of this years backups, Sanford or Dekanich, should be. Dekanich should be the stronger of the two, but he is injured an there is no real clue when he will be back. So Sanford will start the season as the backup, and he'll have to play since the schedule is front loaded this year. He's an older guy, been back and forth from the NHL and the AHL for awhile. He's never been great.

Dekanich is young, has been pretty strong in the AHL. He really doesn't have any NHL experience, so who knows how he would fill this roll. But if he continues to grow, he could be a pretty solid backup.

So overall, unless Mason improves from last year, the goaltending may be worse this year.

One added thing about our goaltending...the assumptions is it will be easier for them this year, as our defense should be much stronger. Hopefully the defense will take pressure of Mason, and he will just go out and play, because quite honestly Mason is as good as anybody, he just has mental issues.

My concern is that the defense isn't going to be a ton better. There will certainly be more offense provided with Wisniewski and hopefully David Savard, but defensively the team still needs a legitimate top-pairing defenseman. Wiz is the #1, but his defense isn't #1 caliber. Hope he proves me wrong. The depth is there.. the Jackets just need a line to throw out and not be overmatched against other teams top lines.

The forwards are above average. They're the strength of the team. Hopefully everyone shows up consistently.

The team has the talent to get into the playoffs. I still think they're a year away from being a team that can actually compete in the playoffs past the first round. PROVE ME WRONG, JACKETS!

Different season, different players, same frustrations....(I type this as they score )....bad penalties, lazy passes in their own zone, iffy goaltending, mediocre special teams, and all-around bad luck.

I swear they must buy the cheapest sticks they can find. It's unbelievable how many untimely stick-breaks they have.

Wow. All over them now. A PP goal would be awfully nice.

Frustrating game to watch.

Hate the Predators to the very core of my soul. But they play within themselves and force mistakes (although the BJs made plenty on their own).

I particularly love the extended periods of just skating around and throwing the puck wherever (usually onto a Predator's stick) and hoping something will happen.

I thought Mason played pretty well. Turnovers in their own end killed them and being unable to clear the puck on that 6 minute power play was tough to overcome.

The fans won't tolerate any kind of a losing streak. They need to string together some wins early or it's going to be tough sledding as far as filling that arena.

Agreed all around. The frustrating part is that they kill of the first penalty and then just take a stupid penalty throwing the puck over the glass because Russell held onto the puck way too long. Then compound it when THAT one ends by taking another incredibly stupid penalty by grabbing the puck.

I hear you on the Preds. Just a damned good system with a bunch of solid players. Lose a guy to free agency? No worry. Just plug the next guy into the system. Trotz is a damned fine coach, in my IMO.
