Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

:groove2:6 years 33 million... Wow, Wiz has to be happy with that deal. Bye bye Hejda.
The Blue Jackets have signed defenseman James Wisniewski to a six-year, $33 million contract, The Dispatch has learned, landing a player they believe can help stoke their moribund power play.

Meanwhile, negotiations between the Blue Jackets and defenseman Jan Hejda have broken off, sending Hejda into free agency at noon today.

Wisniewski could have joined Hejda as a free agent, but after acquiring his negotiating rights in a trade Wednesday with Montreal, the Jackets spent the last 48 hours working on a deal with Wisniewki's agent, Bill Zito.

"This is an important signing," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. "It's a player we targeted and took the step of acquiring his rights. We put our best foot forward, spent the last two days really working at it, and finally got a deal done."

The Jackets trade their fifth-round pick in the 2012 NHL entry draft to the Canadiens to complete the deal of Wisniewski's rights.

"Honestly, I had long, long talks with James about how close we were to free agency," Zito said. "In my mind, there's significantly more money available to him in the free agent market.

"You know what he said, and this isn't B.S. He said, 'I like it there.' He wanted to be in Columbus. He was impressed by what they showed him. It's a fit." CONT...

Question from a casual hockey fan to JOH or anyone else;

With Richards signing with the NYR could the CBJ maybe get Erik Christiensen? Would he be worth anything? Just seeing they (NYR) have a mini glut of center men and the CBJ have a need.

Thoughts?

I don't think he'd be worth getting. Really not good at anything other than shootouts. He is, however, unbelievable in shootouts. He used to be a Penguin and he's played for the Rangers, so I've seen his invisibility plenty.

The Jackets are actually pretty solid with centers right now. Jeff Carter made their position of relative weakness their deepest position. Everyone can be slotted into more ideal roles now. Just my opinion, of course. JO4H is the dude though.. as we all know.

Carter
Brassard
Vermette or Umberger
Pahlsson or Mackenzie

It finally looks like Nash is going to be getting some help. Carter and Wis will be huge helps, especially on the power play. I just hope some of these younger guys in the system step up this year and make a name for themselves. If they step up their game and Mason gets back on track, we should be looking at a playoff spot this year. I'm glad we finally have a GM that has the balls to make some moves.

Jackets are going to be much more fun to watch. The contract for Wisniewski is overpayment, but a necessary one. Good job Howson. Got a #1 center and PPQB in a week.

i apply this rule.
15% premium for free agency.
5-15% premium if your team is borderline playoff team-your team sucks
apply a 5-10% premium for a short term deal
apply a 5-15% reduction for a "life term" contract
subtract cap hit/salary for any "bogus" years [defined by in which they receive a nominal salary, 1m at age 37, etc]

i figure wiz is about a 4.5m player (roughly speaking), apply 15+5 points, you have a 20% premium, output is 5.4m. pretty close to where he signed. further, i think you have to look at the actual salary structure, it is certainly heavy up front, but light on the back end (3m).

no. jackets have no need for him, nor do they want such a player. he has a big shot, and is versatile, can play all three forward positions if need be. that being said he cant/doesnt win battles in the corners, does few if any of the little things, takes shifts/games off. glorified shooutout specialist plus, imo.

howson is an extremely smart man. but sometimes you have to make moves, sometime you have to know when to hold them and know when to fold them. imo, this was his best offseason, seeing as he took last year off essentially i am not sure what that says... the summer before that he attempted a decent sized overall. he has essentially churned his entire roster sans nash as far as people who saw regular ice time.

moreover, i think how he went about this year was reasonably prudent, focus in on one of your two needs, use assets to get that, then apply filler to acquire your other need as essentially a free agent (the pick for wiz, i consider that a free agency pick up with filler used to acquire negotiation rights).

those who wanted lines, id guess something like this.

juice/carter/nash
vermette/brassard/umberger

blunden-dorsett/phalsson/boll
*fourth line tbd
-mayoroz/mckenzie/johan/calvert/atkinson/(giroux/st pierre)

tyutin/wiz
methot/martinek*
russel/clitsome^
-savard/moore/holden/aj
*when healthy
^is this the smallest pairing in hockey?
