3rd Round #66 Overall CBJ

Thomas "T.J." Tynan
C
5'8" 165 lbs (R)
Notre Dame / Des Moines USHL

17 goals/ 55 assists and 55 PIM in 60 games played with Des Moines in 2009-2010

Notre Dame’s T.J. Tynan is in his second year of draft eligibility and is making the most of it. Leading the Irish and the nation’s freshmen with a pretty remarkable 46 points (19g-27a), the small center has been unavoidable. Though dogged by his size, Tynan has shown in back-to-back seasons that he can produce against bigger, stronger opponents. He did it last year with Des Moines in the USHL and now in NCAA Division I hockey. Tynan just has a few short weeks left of proving himself and will likely have plenty of eyes on him throughout the CCHA playoffs and the NCAA tournament. If this is going to be the Draft where the little guy gets his due, it can’t end without Tynan getting picked.
Small, but very talented playmaker.
ISS said of Tynan in Dec. 2009: "Displays wonderful on-ice vision and playmaking skills, along with a solid wrist shot makes up for lack of size with a ton of skill."
Dynamic, playmaking center is one of six forwards in Notre Dame's 12-man freshman class in 2010-11 ... talented player who makes up for his size with a ton of skill ... has tremendous on-ice vision ... finds the open man and makes plays ... intelligent with the puck ... makes his teammates better ... strong passer who can also finish ... has a good, accurate wrist shot ... joins the Irish lineup after one season with the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers ... signed a national letter-of-intent with Notre Dame in the fall of `09 but planned to defer until the 2011-12 season ... was all set to return to Des Moines this season when he was asked to join the Irish after Kyle Palmieri signed with Anaheim ... joined the Irish on August 18 along with defenseman Kevin Lind ... a first round selection by Des Moines in the 2008 USHL Futures Draft, Tynan did not disappoint ... he led the Buccaneers in scoring with 17 goals and 55 assists for 72 points in 60 games ... seven of his 17 goals came on the power play while he picked up 26 power-play assists ... his 55 assists were tops in the USHL while his 72 points were fifth overall ... selected to the 2010 USHL all-rookie team along with fellow Notre Dame freshman Anders Lee ... played last summer with the USA Select 18 Team with Lind that finished fourth at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Aug. of 2009 ... recorded one assist in three games ... is one of 16 Notre Dame players with ties to the USHL ... one of four Illinois natives on the Notre Dame roster along with junior Billy Maday (Burr Ridge), sophomore Sam Calabrese (Park Ridge) and Lind (Homer Glen) ... one of two former Des Moines Buccaneers on the roster along with senior Ben Ryan ... signed in the early-signing period (Nov. of `09) along with forwards Jeff Costello, David Gerths, Anders Lee, Garrett Peterson and Bryan Rust plus defensemen Stephen Johns and Jarred Tinordi.

"Notre Dame freshman center T.J. Tynan was named the Hockey Commissioners? Association (HCA) National Division I Rookie of the Year"

Notre Dame freshman center T.J. Tynan was named the Hockey Commissioners? Association (HCA) National Division I Rookie of the Year on Friday afternoon.
The talented rookie led all CCHA and the nation?s freshmen in scoring with 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points, including 16 multi-point games en route to becoming the second Irish player named the CCHA rookie of the year. Tynan was selected as the CCHA rookie of the week four times during the 2010-11 season, was the CCHA rookie of the month for November, the RBC Financial Group CCHA player of the month in December and the Notre Dame Monogram Club?s team most valuable player.
During the ?10-?11 CCHA regular season, the Irish were 15-4-2 when Tynan?s name found the scoresheet. Included were four, two-goal games, and 10 multi-point efforts on the year. He was selected by the league?s coaches as a second team all-CCHA performer while also earning a unanimous spot on the CCHA?s all-rookie team.
The 19-year old center finished the campaign with five power-play goals, two short-handed tallies and a pair of game winners as Notre Dame was 25-14-5 for the year and finished second in the CCHA with an 18-7-3-2 record. He helped the Irish to the NCAA Northeast Regional championship with a 4-3 overtime victory against Merrimack and a 2-1 win versus New Hampshire to send Notre Dame to its second Frozen Four appearance in the last four seasons.
At the Frozen Four, Tynan scored his 23rd goal of the season in the 4-3 loss to Minnesota-Duluth. The former Des Moines Buccaneer (USHL) became just the third Notre Dame freshman to score 50 or more points in a season with his 54 being just five points off the school record set by John Noble ?73 and Dave Poulin ?82 in their freshmen seasons. The 54 points also are the most by an Irish player since the 1989-90 season.
The 5-8, 156-pound center signed a national letter-of-intent with Notre Dame in November of 2009 while playing for the Des Moines Buccaneers in the 2009-10 season. A first-round selection of the Bucs in the 2008 Futures Draft, Tynan posted big numbers in his rookie year in the league. He led Des Moines in scoring with 17 goals and 55 assists for 72 points in 60 games and was named to the 2010 USHL all-rookie team. His 55 assists led the league and his 72 points were fifth overall.
The HCA Rookie of the Year is selected in a vote by the assistant coaching staffs of all 58 NCAA Division I hockey teams. Players on the ballot receive five points for a first-place vote, three points for second and one for third place. Each conference?s top rookie serves as their respective league?s nominee.
Tynan is the first winner to come from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The WCHA and Hockey East have each had two winners in the last four years.

"He's smart, polished and effortless ? just a highly-skilled kid. Mike Reilly is like John-Michael Liles (Colorado Avalanche). He's dynamic and he never beats himself. ? He led his team in defensemen scoring with 43 points (13-30--43) in 2010-11 and helped Shattuck St. Mary?s capture the Under-18 Tier I National Championship by defeating Mid Fairfield Blues 3-1 in the final.

? Shattuck St. Mary?s has produced 40 NHL draft selections since Joe Corvo was drafted 83rd overall in 1995 ? the list of alumni includes Stanley Cup champions Chicago?s Jonathan Toews and Pittsburgh?s Sidney Crosby.

? Reilly credits both his brothers and his father for having the biggest influence on his career ? ?my dad has always coached me and my brothers make me better?. 5th round pick Seth Ambroz was a steal, ranked 31 for North American skaters.

Seth Ambroz
RW
6'2" 211 lbs (R)
Omaha, USHL
24 goal, 22 assists, 89 PIM in 56 games

NHL Central Scouting's Al Jensen
?He's a John Tonelli-type player, very strong. I've seen him run over players along the boards to get by them. He competes very hard and has good hands and puck skills. He has a strong skating stride -- not lightning speed, but very effective and strong. He has a good, hard wrist shot and is responsible in his own end."

NHL Central Scouting's Jack Barzee
"He'll give his opponents fits when they try to cover him in front of the net. He's a power forward who likes to drive to the net at every opportunity. He has very good hands with a quick release and will catch goaltenders by surprise. He scores goals in many ways and makes big plays. He loves to battle along the boards and, in the corners, protects the puck with confidence. He's aggressive and tough and will fight; he's a team leader.?
? He has committed to the University of Minnesota for the fall of 2011.

? Ambroz led Omaha in scoring in 2010-11, recording 46 points (24-22--46) in 56 games helping Omaha finish second in the United States Hockey League Western Conference ? Omaha was defeated by Sioux Falls in the first round of the 2011 playoffs.

? He won a gold medal with the U.S. at the 2010 World Junior ?A? Challenge, defeating Canada East 6-4 in the gold medal game after facing a 4-1 deficit halfway through the game ? Ambroz scored the first U.S. goal on the power-play.

? The hockey lineage in the Ambroz family is strong -- his older brother, Matt, plays at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and his sister, Kacy, plays for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. His brother also spent two full seasons playing in the USHL for the Tri-City Storm.

? He made the jump to the USHL for the 2008-09 season and at 15 years old he was the youngest player in the league -- he scored 14 goals, 17 assists and tallied 88 penalty minutes in 60 games, playing on a line with Louis Leblanc (18th overall by Montreal in 2009). Before joining the USHL, he recorded 68 points (36-32--68) in 22 games with New Prague High School in 2007-08.

I've read mixed reviews thus far in Tynan. Essentially trading Fitolav for him, in that respect it doesn't equate very good. Also saw he was completely passed over in 2010 draft.

Filatov was beginning to become a burden, wish he could've given the Jackets more than a third, but the media can stop asking questions about him now. He turned his back on his team two seasons ago and never earned a roster spot. Now he's Ottawa's problem. I do wish him well, he seemed like a good enough kid, just had some maturity issues.

Omaha Lancers power forward and Minnesota native Seth Ambroz feels he has something to prove.

Despite the fact NHL Central Scouting had him ranked No. 31 on the final list of North American skaters, Ambroz was forced and sit and wait before the Columbus Blue Jackets finally called his name in the fifth round (No. 128 overall) Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.

Despite feeling a bit disappointed, Ambroz was grateful to the Blue Jackets for at least giving him the opportunity of a lifetime.

"I've been told a lot of times that it's a number," Ambroz said. "When you get drafted, you're a number and after that, it's what you do after the draft. Are you willing to pay the price to get to where you want to go? We'll see what happens."
Ambroz grinned when asked if he had a message for fans of the Blue Jackets.

"Hopefully, you guys got a steal," he said.

When Ambroz joined Omaha from New Prague High School in Minnesota as a 15-year-old in 2008-09, he immediately made an impact, notching 14 goals, 17 assists and 88 penalty minutes in 60 games. It was at a time when Ambroz wouldn't admit much to reporters -- a combination of his reserved demeanor despite bursting upon the scene at such a young age.

The University of Minnesota-bound Ambroz was a changed man in 2010-11, however. He finished with a career-high 24 goals on a league-leading 222 shots on goal, had 16 of his 46 points on the power play and a plus-3 rating in 56 games. For his career, he had 60 goals, including 25 with the man advantage, 126 points, 295 penalty minutes and a plus-15 rating in 172 games.

Ambroz, who was the top-rated Minnesotan, said he didn't know what to expect at the Draft. He was the fourth-highest player from the Twin Cities selected, after Mario Lucia (Wild, 60th overall) of Wayzata High School, Andy Welinski (Ducks, No. 83) of the Green Bay Gamblers and Joe LaBate (Canucks, 101st overall) of the Academy of Holy Angels.

"I had no idea, obviously you don't know what to expect and obviously you're expecting to be higher, but now it's all said and done and I can't complain since I was selected to an NHL team," Ambroz said. "That's always a great accomplishment ? now it's what you do afterward.

"I did think it would be earlier on, but stuff happens. It's what you do from here on out."

Those evaluators of Central Scouting certainly had their reasons for listing Ambroz near the top of the North American list.

"He's a John Tonelli-type player, very strong," Central Scouting's Al Jensen said. "I've seen him run over players along the boards to get by them. He competes very hard and has good hands and puck skills. He has a strong skating stride, not lightning speed, but very effective and strong. He has a good, hard wrist shot and is responsible in his own end."

Ambroz said he'll get back to work on Monday in an effort to eventually make a name for himself.

"I have to improve my foot speed," he said. "I feel I have size and everything like that but it's going to be those first three steps. If I can do that, I might be able to get to where I want to go."

catching up on some of the comments.

ryan johansen-still the org believes he has top flight potential. he has good size, a keen vision and sense for the game. his linemates got drafted this weekend, hard to say if this is a chicken or the egg situation. best prospect in the system no doubt. at times purely just dominated the whl.

carter trade-worst kept secret in hockey.

jenner-heart and soul player. his potential lies somewhere between manny malhotra and mike richards. think an umberger type work ethic, hates to lose, fights for every ice of ice, a warrior.

tynan-tiny. wont be a big kid either. interesting pick, the margin of error for those lacking size is a sliver. the difference between a geoff platt and a martin st louis is razor thin... hard worker, serious skill, will have to overcome his size to every set foot on an nhl sheet of ice.

reilly-another small guy. physically immature. very raw as a player, needs to develop physically. raw as a player, though plays with an assuring ease to his game.

ambroz-it has been down hill since he was 16, has yet to really progress. does not play with a fire or passion necessary often times, bigger guy who doesnt always use it. needs to be willing to take the punishment necessary to compete. his upside is dan cleary in nature, a highly touted youngster whose development has stagnated, needs to continue to progress as a player. top end career 3rd liner.

forsberg- from modo, but no relation to foppa.

sedlak-spectacularly unspectacular. does nothing elite, but does everything well.
