Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

One point out of the 8 playoff spot held currently by the Colorado Avalanche.

Colorado comes to town on Tuesday night! The return of Adam Foote!!!!

Let's go Jackets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Foote can run from Jackets, but can't hide

Imagine the following scenario:

It's getting deep into February and the Toronto Maple Leafs are five points out of the playoffs. The captain of the Leafs is in the final year of his contract but has stated that he wants to sign an extension and stay in Toronto.
Ultimately, however, the captain's actions say otherwise.
The captain sets his contract demands at $4 million per season. The Leafs start at $3 million per season but move up to $3.5 million, assuming the captain will meet them and a deal will be done. However, the captain does not budge and a stalemate ensues.
With the deadline hours away, the captain tells Leafs management, according to the club's majority owner, that if he isn't signed to an extension -- at his $4 million demand -- he will refuse to play the rest of the season.
So a trade becomes the Leafs' only option, and the captain has but one destination for which he'll waive his no-trade clause -- his former club, the Colorado Avalanche.
So the deal goes down. The captain is traded back "home" and the Leafs suffer an emotional and physical loss so devastating that any hope of the playoffs is lost.
In the hours after the trade, some backroom workings become known, making it seem as if the captain was planning this trade all along.
The plane that whisked the captain to Calgary, where the Avalanche played that night, was parked nearby one night before the trade deadline.
A box of equipment -- to the captain's specifications and with the Avalanche logo -- arrived in Calgary before the trade was struck. The Flames' equipment staff was asked to sew the captain's name on the back of an Avalanche sweater hours before the deal was reached.
OK, now replace Toronto with Columbus and captain with Adam Foote. And realize that this scenario played out in February in Columbus.
No, Columbus is not Toronto. It does not have the hockey history to match the center of the hockey universe.
But Columbus is a member of the NHL. It has ticket-buying fans who paid for Foote's $4.6 million annual salary for the better part of three seasons and should not be walked out on.
If Foote did this in Toronto, he would be vilified by fans and media for the rest of his hockey life.
The Blue Jackets, including captain Rick Nash, have mostly avoided criticizing Foote, saying in so many words that he "did what's best for his family." Not surprising, given the hockey code.
Privately, however, a handful of players say they'll never forgive Foote. One, privately, has likened him to a traitor, saying he "talked about playing for the sweater the whole time he was here but then bailed on everybody at the worst possible time."
Twice last week, when the Blue Jackets played in Denver, Foote declined requests to speak with The Dispatch.
It's questionable whether Foote, who has a triceps injury, will play Tuesday when the Avalanche plays in Nationwide Arena for the first time since the trade.
But he'll have to play here eventually.

Foote could have made things easier on himself by addressing what was said. He hasn't said a word either backing up the allegations or denying the allegations. You can't make up the fact that there are bags packed and an airplane waiting to take someone back to Colorado BEFORE the deal even gets done. Don't say you want to stay in Columbus and then bail. That's what he did.

Say you loved your time in Columbus but now it's time to go back to Colorado.

What a game!!! Mase was a little off tonight and the team took care of him.

Great to see. Voracek and Huselius had some spring in their step tonight.

This team is really coming together. Torres will be back Friday and Nash is skating hard.

The rookies and call ups seem to have weathered the storm and now some of the big guns are coming back.

I'm loving this season right now.

Pretty amazing that the Jackets are even in this thing with the roster turnover they've been experiencing due to injuries. Long way to go, but in seasons past, things would have been all but over had the same setbacks taken place.

The new guys have stepped in well.

Hitch seems to be working them hard.

The Columbus Dispatch : Blue Jackets trade for help on power play

In an effort to buoy their struggling power play, the Blue Jackets today acquired forward Jason Williams from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Clay Wilson and a sixth-round draft pick in the 2009 draft.

Williams, 28, is a right-handed shot who can play point on the power play. The Jackets have not had a legitimate right-handed shot on the point this season, which makes its difficult to set up one-time shots from the blue line.
He is a versatile forward who can play right wing or center and is expected to be in the lineup Friday night against New Jersey. cont...

Re: Blue Jackets Trade Jody Shelley to Sharks for Sixth Round Pick

If we need an "inforcer", why didn't we just keep Shelley. Besides he was a "fan favorite". How good a player are we really going to get with San Jose's 6th round pick in the 2009 NHL draft anyway?

This was yet another poor trade/personel action/draft pick by the Blue Jackets.

could be, time will tell. 6th rounder can be step.

for reference sake of the top of my head these guys have been late round guys youve likely heard of or seen drafted by columbus in late rounds.
dorsett was a 7th rounder
clitsome was 9th
methot 6th
murray 8th
(shelley was undrafted)

being flatly honest two things
1-columbus cant afford to carry a specialist, the same reason balastik was let go. jody plays 5 mins a night, hes never been a 8 minute player. a good portion of his role is go head to head vs the ducks and parros and company. look at the ducks pims, they have some real bad bad dudes who want to pound you.

look at the central, detroit?, nashville sure they have tootoo but hes a small guy, chicago and then you have the blues who are the only team youc ould argue have someone to possibly fear or a team to fear and they are no good so you dont build your team to play that you build your team to beat the skilled poession teams of det and chi.

2-hitch doesnt want a goon, he wants a bunch of guys who can and will check and are hard to play against.

i think columbus has had more than one questionable trades/signings but hey thats how it goes, if you gamble youll win and youll lose.

Re: Williams Trade - The sixth-round draft pick is the one the club acquired last season in trading Jody Shelley to San Jose.

Well there is who we got for Shelley.
