leads the nhl with 13 (10 of which were on the road), 17 players have more than 10 fights.

thats whys hes on the team, provide some backstop and agitate a tad and hit anything that moves. chip in 5-8 goals a year, thats his role.

Doesn't seem like he's big enough to be a fighter to me

hes not an enforcer more of the pest/agitator backstop style player. certainly not a heavy weight.

nash named first star of the week
Nash, Rafalski and Ward named NHL stars of week

NEW YORK - Columbus Blue Jackets left-winger Rick Nash was named NHL first star of the week Monday.
He led all NHL scorers with nine points (2-7) as the Blue Jackets won three of four road games last week.
Nash had one goal and one assist in a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles on Dec. 29 and notched one assist in a 2-0 win over Anaheim on New Year's Eve. He posted a season-high four points (1-3) in a 6-1 win over Colorado last Friday and had two assists in a 5-2 loss to St. Louis a night later.

Shelley has 9 for the Sharks.

Re: Blue Jackets Trade Jody Shelley to Sharks for Sixth Round Pick

If we need an "inforcer", why didn't we just keep Shelley. Besides he was a "fan favorite". How good a player are we really going to get with San Jose's 6th round pick in the 2009 NHL draft anyway?

This was yet another poor trade/personel action/draft pick by the Blue Jackets.

could be, time will tell. 6th rounder can be step.

for reference sake of the top of my head these guys have been late round guys youve likely heard of or seen drafted by columbus in late rounds.
dorsett was a 7th rounder
clitsome was 9th
methot 6th
murray 8th
(shelley was undrafted)

being flatly honest two things
1-columbus cant afford to carry a specialist, the same reason balastik was let go. jody plays 5 mins a night, hes never been a 8 minute player. a good portion of his role is go head to head vs the ducks and parros and company. look at the ducks pims, they have some real bad bad dudes who want to pound you.

look at the central, detroit?, nashville sure they have tootoo but hes a small guy, chicago and then you have the blues who are the only team youc ould argue have someone to possibly fear or a team to fear and they are no good so you dont build your team to play that you build your team to beat the skilled poession teams of det and chi.

2-hitch doesnt want a goon, he wants a bunch of guys who can and will check and are hard to play against.

i think columbus has had more than one questionable trades/signings but hey thats how it goes, if you gamble youll win and youll lose.

What are the odds of playoffs at this point?

Does fighting happen in hockey at any level outside of professional?

Well, if the season ended today, the BJs would be one point out of the last playoff spot. Considering they have apparently found a franchise goaltender in the last month, I'd say the chances are not bad at all. There's still 43 games left, so a lot can happen.

Fighting in US college and international play will result in ejection, and possibly further disciplinary action. I'm not sure about the top Canadian major-junior leagues, because they are very close to professional. In most non-pro competition, all players are required to wear full face shields, which makes fighting kind of pointless.

currently in the 9th spot (one point out) top 8 make the playoffs. typically they say 94 pts or some people will say 10 games over .500 will make the playoffs (that is 10 wins or OTL over). this is a super tight race this year with a cluster from the 6-14 spots.

here are the current standings.

current odds, who knows. the jackets are in the meat of the race approaching the halfway point. (82 games in the regulare season and the jackets have played 39). they have another rash of injuries with juice, novotny hurt, chimmer, okt, torres on the mend and klesla on the ir.

yes, most levels allow fighting.

all iihf games (olympics, euro leagues) ban fighting, fisticuffs and roughing in rule 528. they i believe toss the instigator and penatilize the other person, then toss third man in i think thats how it work its like a 9 part rule.

ncaa results in game ejection also plus the number of game disqualifications youve suffered that year. so your third fight is your game is over plus games youve been tossed.

so its not outlawed in either just stiffer penalties.

chl (canadian jrs) echl, ahl (essentially AAA nhl) and nhl all allow fighting under nhl penalty rules.

3-0 Final. :(

Still just 3 points out of a playoff spot. 7 pts from the 5th seed.

@ Washington will be tough on Friday. Followed by a big game against Minn (one of the 2 teams just 3 pts ahead of them in the standings).

Wash is playing lights out at home, Minn has beaten SJS, Bos and should have beaten Det in their last 4 games. They are playing extremely well.

Add in Nash being day to day and its not looking so hot.
