Columbus Blue Jackets (Official Thread)

Is this Filatov kid a player?

Obviously JO can speak to this more than I can, but Filatov is definitely a player. He's young (18) but he's a fantastic talent. 11 points in 7 games with Russian junior team in World Junior Hockey Championship and 17 points in 23 games with Syracuse. Not sure if he's NHL ready but pickins are getting pretty slim in Columbus with the injury bug biting (often).

Is this Filatov kid a player?
he was named a starter on the ahl all star team. he is young (18) and physically he needs some development. he dominated the wjc and was on the all tournament team. explosive skater, quick, nice top end, plays pretty good not great in traffic, nice wrister, tries in his own zone and is marginal for two reasons 1-size and 2-tends to break out of the zone early to try and create transition. most consider him a better talent than brassard. the top 4 prospects mason/brassard/jake/nikita look promising. nikita needs to bulk up, that will come in time. he is about 6 ft and 175lbs, hell bulk up but hell never be the physical force ovie is. nikita has played in the cska (red army) team in russia for his jr development and level 3 and the big club (now the khl cska team). this was nik zherdevs and manyother high level russians teams, it is considered one of the better clubs in the world.

reality is he dropped some due to a few reasons: teams wanted the big physical dmen of last years draft (thus the leafs trading up for luke schenn) and he was russian with the pending khl and the flight of some nhl players. nikita has said all along he has wanted to play in the nhl, he speaks good english-even compared to established euro players and comes from a good family-his mother is a teacher.

stamkos was seen as the #1 pick, ill tell you that stamkos resulted was a big part of the melrose firing. barry felt steven was not ready, the new owners who put up billboards to sell tickets before teh draft disagreed and felt he should be a top six player from the get go.

you should see some nikita in the coming days with rash of injuries. ill be frank depending on when nash gets back it could be a rough stretch to the break. this team is essentially half an ahl team. if they play with the fire and determination weve seen they might be able to float and overcome the talent gap with the loss of those guys, the lack of knowledge of the system, the break out pass system and the entry system. hopefully juice and raffi will be back in the next week or so.

A co-worker (die-hard Leafs fan, secondary Jackets fan -- he's from Toronto) shared a flight from Detroit to Columbus with Filatov the other night and ended up sharing a table with him while they ate during a flight delay. Filatov had some interesting comments about Zherdev.......

I won't post the thoughts, don't want to get sued for libel or anything (no joke!).....but I'll PM my sixteenth-hand info about it if anyone's interested...

The co-worker also told me some great stories about the Leafs. Back when Shayne Corson wasn't traveling for road games due to his anxiety issues & panic attacks, apparently hes was tapping Mogilny's wife while the team was on the road.

Apparently, recent HOF inductee Glenn Anderson may or may not have been late for training camp one year because he was in Barbados.....with his boyfriend. :slappy:

Jackets playing in Washington without Nash and we find out mason was 50/50 to start because of "upper body" tightness". Its so bad on paper you almost expect them to win.

Somehow they are up 1-0 and Mason has stopped over a dozen shots in the first 10 minutes. Amazing.

1-0 Jackets after 1
shots are 18-4 for WAS

10 minute mark of 2nd period and Mason is playing like 1 might be enough
shots are 25-9 and its still 1-0

They have now have 5 PK's including 45 seconds of 5 on 3 and its still 1-0

ballgame 2-0 Jackets!!

3-0 final against a very very good Washington team on the road. Shocking. Capitals had won 7 in a row.

Mason

6th shutout. 45 saves!

It'd be huge if they could keep this up and win tomorrow against playoff contending Minnesota. Then they get a couple days off and face another contending team, the Avs.

Big (unexpected) win tonight though. :)

Huselius could go tonight per the Dispatch.

He skated hard yesterday in Columbus and felt good. If he wakes up feeling good then he'll play tonight against Minny.

Torres is planning on being back on Thursday.

On another note:
Mason not being named to the All Star team is a fucking joke. No other goalie in the league is playing better than Mase so far this season. Leads the league in shut outs and GAA.

The line just jumped for MIN, I'm thinking they know something about Mason.

He was having some kind of upper body tightness last night, he may be feeling the effects and not able to play a B2B.

If so they are obviously toast, MIN is a damn good team, playing well right now and, unlike WAS, will not panic in a 1-0 type of game. Then again I gave up trying to figure out the Jackets a long time ago, they make my head hurt.

***TRADE***

RW Adam Pineault for LW Mike Blunden

Blunden was Chicago's 2dn rounder in 2005. Pineault was a 2nd rounder in 2004. Just trying to switch things up a little? Not sure what Blunden has done for Chicago but Pineault hasn't really done much for the Jackets. Should be interesting to see what this kid brings to the table.
