Blue Jackets defensemen, including Duvie Westcott (10), no longer are left to their own devices in advancing the puck out of the defensive zone.

  • Suddenly, Blue Jackets defensemen don't look so slow and plodding.

Of all the visible improvements from last season -- the penalty kill, the goaltending, the defensive play -- none has been as startling as the Blue Jackets' ability to get the puck out of their own zone.
"Everybody is working for each other to get the puck up the ice," defenseman Duvie Westcott said. "In years past, the defensemen would go back to get the puck, and it was up to them to make a play to get it out of the zone.

By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda arrived in Columbus with a million-dollar contract but little more than the shirt on his back.
"It took me about a month to get all my clothes and furniture here," said Hejda, a free-agent acquisition from Edmonton. "I only had about a week's worth of clothes."

Jackets notebook: Boll injury may mean time for Shelley

Saturday, October 13, 2007 4:02 AM
By Tom Reed

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets right winger Jared Boll is out of the lineup, but fans of Jody Shelley should not assume that means their man will make his season debut tonight at the Colorado Avalanche.
Coach Ken Hitchcock said he has not decided how to fill the void left by Boll, a rambunctious rookie whose left shoulder was injured in a fight Wednesday.
Hitchcock might use Shelley or fellow winger Curtis Glencross. He also might play with seven defensemen, as he did in the season opener.

Underneath the black paint and tape is an all wooden stick preferred by Blue Jackets forward David Vyborny.

He gave a composite stick a try awhile back, but the Blue Jackets' David Vyborny plans to finish his career playing with a wooden stick.

Tucked just inside the Blue Jackets' locker room is the team stick rack, where heavily padded players, on their way to morning practice, grab their tools of the trade.
Red ones, blue ones, shiny ones, almost every stick a reflection of the latest technology.
And then there are David Vyborny's sticks: short, stubby, all wood and spray-painted black.

Avalanche 5Blue Jackets 1
Jackets a step behind Avalanche all the way

Sunday, October 14, 2007 4:21 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

DENVER -- This was one of those barometer games for the Blue Jackets, the kind they have to start winning before the rest of the NHL will take them seriously.

That'll have to wait.
The Blue Jackets ran into a familiar buzz saw last night, losing 5-1 to the Colorado Avalanche in front of 16,153 in the Pepsi Center. Two of the Avs' biggest stars -- captain Joe Sakic (three goals) and Milan Hejduk (two goals, two assists) -- had a field day against the Jackets, who are 2-22-1-0 all time against Colorado.

Svitov appears happy in Russia

Sunday, October 14, 2007 4:00 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

An interview with former Blue Jackets center Alexander Svitov appeared on the Web yesterday.
Russian reporter Pavel Kopachek had a lengthy sit-down with Svitov, who surprised the Blue Jackets by playing in Russia only six weeks after he signed a two-year contract with Columbus.
The only surprise among Svitov's comments is that he plans to stay in Omsk, Russia, for three more years.
Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson has said that he'd keep the door open for a Svitov return, presumably for the 2008-09 season.

My sat was going great until Colorado messed up my CBJ :shake: I hate the Avalanche

You aren't the only one

Unfortunately that game shows that for all the promise the 2-1 start showed, they still have some distance to go before being an elite team. I didn't think they were elite before this (elite being Colorado Detroit and maybe Anaheim this year in the West), but they should be in that middle tier and not the bottom.

Joe Sakic of the Avalanche takes aim at his third goal Saturday against the Blue Jackets and goaltender Pascal Leclaire.

DENVER -- Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson and defenseman Duvie Westcott will place a phone call this morning to the NHL office.
The call will be to director of hockey operations Colin Campbell, who hands out NHL punishments. Westcott will be asked to explain his actions near the end of a 5-1 loss Saturday to the Colorado Avalanche.

Groin injuries are becoming a pain

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 3:36 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not classify the groin injury as contagious.

Tell that to the Blue Jackets.
Left winger Rick Nash became the team's third high-profile player to miss time because of the ailment as he sat out practice yesterday.
Coach Ken Hitchcock said he expects Nash to play tonight against the Dallas Stars. The news is not as optimistic for Fredrik Modin. Hitchcock said the forward, also nursing a groin injury, is out tonight and could miss a game Friday in Buffalo. The team is awaiting results of a magnetic resonance imaging.
