CHICAGO -- As the games began to accumulate, a reputation began to emerge.
The Blue Jackets, nearly three weeks into the 2007-08 season, were a low-scoring, grind-it-out, defensive-minded club that made watching hockey akin to watching old men fish.
For that reason alone, a 7-4 win last night over the Chicago Blackhawks in front of 10,844 in the United Center couldn't have come at a better time.

Derick Brassard

CHICAGO -- Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson traveled to Syracuse, N.Y., over the weekend to look at center Derick Brassard, currently tearing up the American Hockey League.
Brassard, with three goals and six assists, is tied for fourth in scoring in the AHL, having scored in all six games.
Still, a call-up to the Blue Jackets, who could use a No. 1 center, does not appear imminent.

Blue Jackets: Peca there to support a former teammate

Thursday, October 25, 2007 4:00 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

Blue Jackets center Michael Peca drove home from Nationwide Arena on the morning of the season opener frustrated by the minor injuries that kept him from playing.
On that ride from the rink, he received a call from his best friend and former teammate, Jason Blake, who delivered news that hit Peca with the impact of an open-ice check.
"I'm worried about training camp stuff and he tells me he has leukemia," Peca said. "It was so tough to hear. He wasn't worried about his hockey career, he was worried about being around for his wife and three kids."

Jackets notebook: Westcott feels fine after hit

Thursday, October 25, 2007 3:43 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

Blue Jackets defenseman Duvie Westcott lay on the United Center ice for several minutes Tuesday night, feeling slightly dazed and fearing the worst.
After a first-period collision with Chicago Blackhawks forward Kevyn Adams, Westcott thought he might have suffered another concussion.
Yesterday morning, however, Westcott said he wasn't experiencing any lingering effects. He missed the final 3 1/2 months of last season because of concussion symptoms.

Last night was my first chance to sit down and watch a game beginning to end, so I'll chime in with a couple thoughts from last night's game and the season thus far.

I don't watch much of the NHL outside of Columbus, but if there's a player stronger with the puck than Rick Nash, I'd love to see him play. At one point last night (near the end of the 2nd), he had 9 of the Jackets' 19 shots and also had 7 scoring chances. And what a freaking ridiculous goal last night. Wow! Gotta keep him healthy. If Nick Rash goes down, this team is in a serious world of hurt.

4th shutout in 6 games for Leclaire. Ho-hum. Nothing to see here. When he's on, he seems to be untouchable. 1.34 GAA and .950 save percentage? Yeah, I guess I'll take that.

Glad to see Fritsche put back on a line with Chimmer and Manny, even if it is just temporary. Those three really played well together last year and they looked very good last night.

The second line really didn't do anything last night. Surprising to see Vyborny and Feds are both -3 on the season. Have to get some more production out of that line. Getting Modin back will be nice.

Nik actually looked pretty good to me last night and it sounds like he's been pretty solid thus far. Color me pleasantly surprised.

11 points in 9 games. Tied for the 3rd in the Western Conference. Keep up the great work, fellas!

And the Preds are in the cellar! Life is good.

Rick Nash is tripped up by Eric Brewer in the third period. Brewer was assessed a penalty on the play.

Blue Jackets left winger Rick Nash has tried the move after practice, oh, a few hundred times.
Every once in a while it works.
Last night, with a St. Louis Blues defender hanging on his back and the Blue Jackets clinging to a one-goal lead late in the second period, Nash got a perfect puck bounce off the back wall, and from there he let his highlight-reel instincts take over.
