CHICAGO -- As the games began to accumulate, a reputation began to emerge.
The Blue Jackets, nearly three weeks into the 2007-08 season, were a low-scoring, grind-it-out, defensive-minded club that made watching hockey akin to watching old men fish.
For that reason alone, a 7-4 win last night over the Chicago Blackhawks in front of 10,844 in the United Center couldn't have come at a better time.

Derick Brassard
CHICAGO -- Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson traveled to Syracuse, N.Y., over the weekend to look at center Derick Brassard, currently tearing up the American Hockey League.
Brassard, with three goals and six assists, is tied for fourth in scoring in the AHL, having scored in all six games.

"I'm worried about training camp stuff and he tells me he has leukemia," Peca said. "It was so tough to hear. He wasn't worried about his hockey career, he was worried about being around for his wife and three kids."

Blue Jackets defenseman Duvie Westcott lay on the United Center ice for several minutes Tuesday night, feeling slightly dazed and fearing the worst.
After a first-period collision with Chicago Blackhawks forward Kevyn Adams, Westcott thought he might have suffered another concussion.
Yesterday morning, however, Westcott said he wasn't experiencing any lingering effects. He missed the final 3 1/2 months of last season because of concussion symptoms.

Rick Nash is tripped up by Eric Brewer in the third period. Brewer was assessed a penalty on the play.
Blue Jackets left winger Rick Nash has tried the move after practice, oh, a few hundred times.
Every once in a while it works.
Last night, with a St. Louis Blues defender hanging on his back and the Blue Jackets clinging to a one-goal lead late in the second period, Nash got a perfect puck bounce off the back wall, and from there he let his highlight-reel instincts take over.
