Michael Arace commentary | NHL: Longtime misfits giving fans hope

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues have beaten their fans out of their buildings. Coming out of the lockout, they lost in lockstep and took for granted their loyal customers. That's bad business. Something had to change, and so it happened. There were there were purges at the highest levels in all three organizations.

Pascal Leclaire made up for a subpar performance in a loss Sunday by stopping 36 shots against the Blues.

Perhaps nobody in North America enjoys walking to their mailbox more these days than Jerard Leclaire.
Each week, the Montreal native is getting a package from Columbus, courtesy of his son, with another vulcanized rubber keepsake.
Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire has been sending home a puck from each of his shutouts. In other words, Papa "Pazzy" is amassing quite a collection.

good read my fav line
“I’m not an actor, that’s for sure,” he said—a conclusion TV viewers aren’t likely to challenge. “I do it for fun, that’s all. All the boys love it, and they like to give me a hard time about it. I’m not trying to win an award or anything. I didn’t even know what I was supposed to say until I showed up there. There was no preparing whatsoever.”

NHL: Jackets guarding against letdown
Solid starts in past haven't lasted long
Saturday, October 27, 2007 3:53 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

A week ago, Blue Jackets center Michael Peca sat in the locker room and joked with teammates about the relatively small media contingent that covers the team.
"When I was in Toronto last season, we'd have 30 reporters in the room -- and that was just after practice," Peca said.
Columbus can't rival the hockey hysteria in Canada, but the Blue Jackets' best start in franchise history is creating a buzz. Two national media outlets, including ESPN T he Magazine, are planning profiles.

Jackets notebook: Leclaire's main focus is wins, not shutouts

Saturday, October 27, 2007 3:38 AM
By Tom Reed

The Columbus Dispatch

It has been 41 years since an NHL goalie registered four shutouts in his first six starts, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire can only hope his career ends on a cheerier note than the man with whom he shares the achievement.
In 1966, the Toronto Maple Leafs recalled Bruce Gamble from the minors, and he posted four shutouts from March 2 to March 12. His 10-year career is noteworthy for another reason: Gamble suffered a heart attack during a game Feb. 9, 1972, as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.

I told you guys that they might just mold themselves into something worth watching under Hitch.

The guy knows how to win.

It's only been ten games, but 6-3-1 is very sustainable for this team if they can avoid the injury bug. And I think they will be in a position to trade FOR talent at the deadline instead of trading away guys they might not resign.

Anyway, I wouldn't get the playoff tickets yet but this is a great start....

David Vyborny, left, of the Blue Jackets and Torrey Mitchell of the Sharks chase the puck along the boards.

The Blue Jackets are three games better than .500 for the first time in their history. But it's how they're winning games that makes one think it just might continue.
The Blue Jackets stared down an agitated bunch of San Jose Sharks yesterday, overcoming an early deficit and then shutting them down in the third period for a 2-1 win in front of 13,324 fans in Nationwide Arena.

Blue Jackets notebook
Penalty kill key in Hitchcock's formula for wins

Sunday, October 28, 2007 3:49 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The Blue Jackets have allowed three power-play goals this season, and coach Ken Hitchcock remembers all three of them.

"Two of them were a problem with us rotating," he said, "and the other was a lack of communication on zone entry."
As Hitchcock spoke yesterday, hours before the Blue Jackets took on the San Jose Sharks, one got the sense that those three goals still irritated him.
That's how serious the Blue Jackets are taking penalty killing this season.
After a 2-1 win yesterday, the Jackets are No. 1 in the NHL with a 94.1 percent success rate. Last season, they were 20th at 82.1 percent.
Those numbers will improve, as the Jackets didn't allow a man-advantage goal in a 2-1 win over the Sharks.

Blue Jackets' hard work developing a personality

Monday, October 29, 2007 3:37 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets' long search for an identity might finally be over.
In crafting a franchise-best 6-3-1 start, the Blue Jackets have shown three traits -- three strengths they can count on when the puck drops every night.
1. Playing hard
It sounds simple enough, but it's not easy in the NHL to be the more aggressive team every night.

Question for those that would know:
Why are some players just NHL ready where some others need time in the minors (sometimes years)? Brassard for example. If he's tearing it up in the AHL why wouldn't that necessarily translate into the NHL? Is it simply the speed of the game like we hear in football? The physicality?
