Blue Jackets fans watch as referee Bill McCreary signals that a shootout goal by the Stars' Jussi Jokinen is good against goalie Fredrik Norrena.

The quiet, nearly empty dressing room made it clear how the Blue Jackets felt about last night's 3-2 shootout loss to the Dallas Stars in Nationwide Arena.
So did coach Ken Hitchcock's hushed tones in the postgame news conference.
To the Blue Jackets, this didn't feel like a point earned but two points gagged away to a Western Conference foe.
"We didn't put the hammer down," Hitchcock said. "We paid for it in the end."

Michael Arace commentary: Young team means Hitchcock can't rely on old methods

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The reputation of Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock, earned in stints with Dallas and Philadelphia in a dozen seasons, is that he's hard on young players.
"No," he said, "I'm very demanding. I don't like that word 'hard.' I'm demanding."
In any case, he has never had a team like the one he has now. He has never had a team so young. The average age of the Blue Jackets is just a shade under 27. Only the Washington Capitals and Phoenix Coyotes are younger.

The Blue Jackets' Gilbert Brule (17) crowds Dallas' Matt Niskanen in the first period.

Blue Jackets goaltender Fredrik Norrena has seen Jussi Jokinen's shootout move in Olympic practices.
He has admired it from the bench and watched it on late-night highlights.
Last night, Norrena probably saw it in his sleep, over and over again.
Despite guessing right and thinking he had the angle played correctly, Norrena couldn't stop Jokinen from scoring the only goal in the shootout and lifting the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory in Nationwide Arena.

What a frustrating loss... we dictated the tempo but weren't able to hold on to the W. Hopefully the guys take this loss personal and learn that you need to play hard all the way to the final horn. The tying goal with a minute and change was unacceptable (even though it was a sweet pass). I like the way we're playing though and Boll sure does bring some energy to our team when he is out there.

Blue Jackets 3, Sabres 0: Nash fuels offense; defense does rest
Left winger has goal, assist to back Leclaire

The Columbus Dispatch

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Three seasons ago, Blue Jackets left winger Rick Nash won a goal-scoring award named after Maurice Richard.
On the 50th anniversary of Richard's 500th goal, Nash delivered a performance that would have made the Rocket's piercing eyes gleam. He scored a goal, contributed an assist and dominated the ice in leading the Blue Jackets to a 3-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire watches a rebound after making a first-period save against the Sabres.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock loved the manic pace and nasty edge forward Dan Fritsche brought to his lineup last season.
Hitchcock is challenging the Cleveland-area native to recapture that robust style.
Fritsche, pointless in the first five games, was a healthy scratch last night against the Buffalo Sabres and replaced by forward Jody Shelley.

It's about damn time. I think there's enough talent on the roster for a playoff spot and I like Hitch. Hopefully they keep on playing up to their potential.
hitch doesnt give a shit about talent. he cares about his team playing with competitive composure. aka if you want to see the ice you better play your ass off in a smart way.

rick is playing as good as anyone in hockey, not jusr scoring. all three zones.

I don't want to speak for BKB, but I think the part I bolded was his emphasis. In other words, if Hitch is able to get the guys to play hard (aka competitive composure) success is plausible.

Hell he's even getting some consistent effort out of Zherdev, which I never expected a non-Russian coach to be able to do.....

I guess he really did want to play in the NHL.....
