In 1972 you were #3 and they (USC) were #1, right?? If you had beaten them then you wouldn't have had a shot at #1??

I'll take your word for it, but that was the assumption I was working with.

#2 Oklahoma was over 200 points ahead of tOSU in the AP poll, and defeated #5 Penn State 14-0 in the Sugar. It's possible that tOSU could have had enough 'traction' to jump them, but it wasn't a likely thing, so I don't include that year as a "lost" MNC in the Rose Bowl.

(I realize that Bama would've claim it, either way. :wink2:)

How would semi-normal people know all that [Mark May]? :p When you talk possible MNC Rose Bowl Games I'd think folks might consider that one of them.

That would be the one even they could not claim. That was the "Punt, Bama, Punt" year (my senior H.S. year).

Then they lost to Texas. Wait - you're right. They would claim a two loss Bama team would jump you.

I am a novice in this high level discussion but seems to me that the four main bowls should be played on New Years Day with the semi finals of a 4 team playoff being that evening and hosted by the schools with the best record. The NC game should be a random site picked well in advance like the NFL does. This seems so completely simple to me that perhaps that fact alone keeps it from being considered.

6 bowl games on New Years Day. All of them would be good games and should be the top 12 teams. I think that has to be the rules. The 4 bowls would have matchups of the #5 - #12 teams and rotate each year on which bowls have the various games. Since the bowl games don't have a part in the playoff it doesn't seem necessary for #5 to play #12 in this scenario. #5 would play #6 and so on. So, theoretically each bowl would get the 3rd best match up on New Years Day on a 4 year rotation.

For the top 4 teams playing that night, reward the top 2 teams with home field advantage. Neutral site for the championship game. What's not to like?

Does it preserve the Pac 12-Big 10 history of the Rose Bowl? No. But it keeps the 4 bowls as meaningful as possible in this new era. What does happen is it keeps the regular season as meaningful as possible and makes New Years Day special like it used to be.

I personally don't believe in the suggestions about teams playing in certain games that HAVE to win their conference. There will always be teams that are outside of the major conferences that are legit and most people want to see them smack a major school in a bowl game - ala Boise State's epic game against OU. Who can deny that this was a killer game? I want to see that possibility continue. In fact it is the only good outcome of the last few years debacle.

I know the money factor drives everything but this just seems so logical. As a side benefit it somewhat helps stem the tide of the superconference which I think sucks.

Boise State upset OU. It's as compelling to me as Stanford upsetting USC when Stanford was a 41 point dog. Which is to say.. not all that compelling. Interesting? Sure. Funny? You bet. Relevant to figuring out who should take home the big crystal football? meh

Ok but what if they had beaten Alabama the week before or the week after? Not then mind you but in a playoff format.

George McFly knocked Biff Tannen the fuck out once also. In the movie, the alternate future has Biff being McFly's bitch. That's what the Boise States of the world think. That because they beat whothefuckever in that one game, that obviously the B1G, B12(10), ACC, etc would be an even match. The thing is...that's Hollywood motherfuckers. In real life, Biff Tannen would've went to prison after waking up, finding McFly and beating him to a bloody fucking pulp after making him kiss his belly hair. Beating any one team makes the dream seem real. Until Wisconsin makes you kiss their belly hair in the next game.

It's having to play Alabama, then Florida, then a back to the wall UGA team, then having a bye week before going to LSU TO GET TO THE PLAYOFF that is the issue.

Wow great story...really had me going until you came up with that fictional ending.

If you believe Boise, in any fucking season of their existence could run through a schedule of @tOSU, MSU, PSU, then @ Wisky without losing AT LEAST three games, then we're done here. Even in a down year for the entire B1G , Ohio State would still struggle with an Illinois or Purdue. Boise is not better than the usual lineup of juggernauts that struggle or lose to an in-conference patsy every single year. They're just fortunate that they play in a shit conference with no history of animosity with the patsies.
