Coaching changes: coaches hired and fired, comings and goings

Let's see. Living in Youngstown where she probably has a lot of friends versus living in Lincoln where she knows no one? Winner, Youngstown. I doubt very seriously they are "living" on his current salary of $200k. My guess is Tressel has put himself in a financial position so that they could live comfortably with or without that salary. And with his business connections, I am confident his true income in Youngstown is higher than the $200k (free cars from dealers, etc.).

Here's one thing....

I'm gonna go out and say it - he's toured our stadium 12 times shook his hand - I think coming back and to coach will be Jim tressel

Ron Kellogg, former QB (think our 'fat' QB from last season )

Hottest potentially moving coaches IMO:

Kevin Sumlin

Gus Malzahn

Hugh Freeze

Justin Fuente

Bob Stoops

Matt Campbell

And by the way, nobody throws $3.8M in perks at any university prez, much less one at a two-bit institution such as YSU.

Is Ellen really tied into Youngstown? If so, OK, but I doubt it.

So you're saying Ellen Tressel is as happy living in Youngstown on $200k annually as she'd be living in Lincoln on $4M?

I don't think so.

He bought her a brand new car a couple years ago: it was a $20k Toyota. Dude drove the same beat up pickup truck the entire time he was in Columbus. They aren't spendthrifts. They have more money than they will every need.

Other programs must hate us. Lose Jim Tressel and replace him with Urban Meyer, albeit with a year of Fickell in there. Lose our Heisman candidate QB and replace him with another Heisman candidate QB. If we win the CCG with Cardale, people will lose their shit.

I get what Nebraska is doing, they should be steam rolling the western division. The fifth winningest program in college football should not get blown out by Wisconsin on a regular basis. I just don't see many coaching candidates that I think are up to the task. It's not a great time to be firing your coach.

That has never been a reason for anyone to not consider a position paying considerably more.

Look, I don't suggest that Tressel will necessarily consider a Nebraska offer should it be given. But none of the reasons provided by posters here are persuasive that he necessarily will not.

I'll say this: Tressel is a much better coach than anyone else whose name has come up.

This is 100% true. Not many obvious "up-and-comers" out there right now.

I'll agree with this. But like I said, he seems happy where he is. I'll be floored if he ever coaches again.
I don't think there is any chance he will go to Nebraska, but I will say that he is the one guy I can think of who could return them to prominence right now.

There are coaches whose sideline antics make me think I'd never want my kid, or a kid I coached, or taught, to play for that guy. Pelini is one of those coaches along with Spurrier, Kelly, and Weiss. There are coaches whose philosophy - or lack thereof - brings me to the same conclusion - take a bow, Pete Carroll - wave to the crowd Brian Kelly - take a victory lap Paterno.

There are coaches I played for as a kid and three whom I got to know as a college student: Woody Hayes, Fred Taylor and Larry Snyder. All three told us in no uncertain terms that our first and foremost job was as a teacher - being a coach had to come second. I think their graduation records and the accomplishments of the athletes they coached in the world after sports proved that they followed what they taught.

Then there is Jim Tressel, calm and supportive on the sideline, no outrageous outbursts, no throwing of kids under the bus, evidently concerned about academics, gracious in defeat, modest in victory - and then comes Tattoo Gate and with it the knowledge that for some reason he covered up what he knew, when he knew it and who he shared that information with. I sincerely believed in him as a coach of the highest order. That stung when I learned the news.

I suspect there are some good young coaches out there, but obviously it's always a challenge to find the right guy.

As to Tress, I would imagine that he's just beyond coaching a football team at this point. He seems to have other priorities now.

The thing is, JT didn't do anything I'm 100% sure nearly every coach does or has done. He just wasn't very good at covering his tracks. But it's all water under the bridge at this point. tOSU has moved on, and it appears so has JT. Like I've said a bunch of times, I think he's done coaching, and quite happy with his new role outside of football.

One thing jumped to mind for me as I read this; at Nebraska you have to recruit nationally, in order to do that you have to travel nationally.

A big factor in Urban Meyer choosing UF over ND job was how much easier it was to recruit (in terms of travel and time) than at ND.

I would think at this point in his life/career that might be a big reason Tressel wouldn't want to take that job all else being equal.

The other thing is the show cause on JT. This is the B1G we are talking about here, not the SEC. I'm not sure Delaney wants a member school to be hiring coaches that have recently landed another B1G school on probation.

Just my .02, I have no idea if this will happen or if its total bullshit.

Something that hasn't been brought up is that college football has entered a new era since Tressel left the scene. I just don't see Tressel ball being as effective now. You have to be able to win a shootout today, and Tressel ball is fundamentally geared on avoiding a shootout at all costs. Even with top tier talent, I just see his inability to play the current style of game as being good for 2-3 losses a year.
