Oregon football: Former coach Mike Bellotti says he would listen to overtures

Former Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti, who earlier this week was tabbed by a newspaper as a potential candidate for the open job at Minnesota, didn?t rule out a return to the coaching ranks during an interview Thursday.
?I don?t know; we?ll see,? said Bellotti, now an analyst for ESPN. ?I like what I?m doing. The travel is a little crazy, but I?m dealing with it. If the right job came up, I would listen. But right now I like doing what I?m doing.?

U alums considering picket over selection process for Gophers football coach

A little birdie says more than a few prominent former University of Minnesota football players concerned about the selection process for a new coach are considering picketing the nationally televised Gophers-Ohio State game Oct. 30 at TCF Bank Stadium unless they become satisfied with the process.

I don't know that Minny could never compete for a national title. If they got hold of a talented young coach (Peterson) who was able to expand their recruiting and build something. They say that stadium is capable of being expanded into the 80K range. Combine that with Big Ten $$ resources, and I certainly think they could stage a renaissance. It would be no less likely than FSU's ascent in the 80s. Not saying it will happen, but it's possible.

If Kansas State could become nationally relevant for close to a decade anything is possible.

Though I rarely (never) post, I must respond to the comments made about Joel Maturi. I appreciate what some of you think you know about Joel. It's not pleasant or easy for someone to fire anyone from any position, much less the head football coach at a Big Ten university. However, I have worked with and know Joel on a personal as well as a professional level. He is not a "dumbass" as you so eloquently put it. I'm sure that firing Tim Brewster was not a decision made lightly and/or quickly. Joel is a very intelligent man and an excellent athletic director. He cares not only for his coaches but also for the student athletes at every university he comes in contact with. Throwing darts at him because he made a tough decision (right or wrong) is uncalled for. Bill Martin, on the other hand........:oh:

he may not have fired Brewster lightly, but he did fire Mason without much thought

Exactly. I guess the former actually involved admitting his mistake.

They guy's a clown, and if he screws up the BTHC, he should be shit-canned and sent scurrying back to the mid-major rock that he crawled out from under.

Boise State?s Chris Petersen targeted by Big Ten school

At least the University of Minnesota is shooting high in its quest for a new football coach. A little birdie says the Gophers have targeted, in order of priority, Boise State?s Chris Petersen, Stanford?s Jim Harbaugh and Texas Christian?s Gary Patterson to replace the fired Tim Brewster. It seems unlikely any of the trio would leave what he has built for a gigantic rebuilding challenge at Minnesota. Petersen, whose Broncos are 7-0 and No. 4 in the Bowl Championship Series rankings, was considered by Southern California to succeed Pete Carroll and certainly could choose from any number of jobs. He is signed through 2014 and reportedly averages almost $2 million a year. Harbaugh, a Michigan grad, would seem destined for his alma mater if that job becomes available. And there?s no reason to leave Stanford, which is ranked No. 13 at 7-1. Harbaugh is signed through 2014 for a reported base salary of $1.25 million. Patterson, signed through 2016 for a reported $2.5 million annually and without a buyout penalty, was seriously considered by the Gophers when they hired Brewster and didn?t seem much interested then. His No. 3-ranked Horned Frogs are 9-0

And since they don't want him anyway.....

Phillip Fulmer drops out of Big Ten coaching race

Former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer publicly took his name out of consideration by telling a Knoxville, Tenn., radio station that Minnesota is ?not a good fit.?
