Cleveland There’s Always Next Years (2021 Season)

Bieber's stats are still decent but he has just not looked quite right at most points this season.

Now there is only 1 reliable spot in the rotation standing. Things are gonna get ugly.

Do you think the Indians win the AL Central if they had dumped Bauers in March and started the season with Bradley at 1B? Or are they more likely to miss the playoffs either way? I think it’s the latter, and there’s lots of evidence to suggest that the Indians front office did too. Just because they continue to refuse to say that R word (Rebuild) doesn’t mean that’s not what they are doing!

In this situation, why not give Bauers 100 or so AB, mostly as a platoon player to enhance his chances? If Bauers doesn’t hit they haven’t lost much, if anything. If he hits some, his trade value goes up a bit. Either way, the odds are VERY high that neither Bauers nor Bradley is the 1B of the team’s future.

I don't see playoff or not playoff as any part of the rationale. It's incredibly messed up to say that there's a open competition for 1B and then choose the guy who struggled mightily (Bauers) over the game who actually had a good spring (Bradley).

If Bradley shows 30+ HR potential, then I see no reason why he isn't the 1B of the future.

“There’s no crying in baseball!” Bradley was never (in any public statements that I saw) promised any “open competition” and the Indians have very, very rarely had a rookie beat out a more experienced player merely on what they did for a few weeks in March. The competition idea was created by the sports media and talk radio. I know, Bauers does not have a lengthy ML career...but he had played in over 210 ML games compared to Bradley’s 15. And don’t forget Bradley’s career strike out rate was, and still is, pretty uninspiring.

If Bradley is the 30+ HR guy you might believe him to be, then they still should have started the season with Bauers to save a year of service time on Bradley’s clock. This is a rebuilding team. Unfortunately, this rebuild won’t be done in one season.

So far Bradley has done very well. If that continues, missing the first 100 ABs or so in 2021 will not deny him success. Having an extra year of control before he becomes a free agent might have a big impact for the Indians...or whatever they’ll be called when that matters.

They only have 3 pitchers who are considered "Starting Pitchers" on the roster right now

Civale
Quantrill
and Sam Hentges

Gonna be burning through those 10 relievers like crazy. Revolving door from AAA Columbus. That bus shipping them back and forth is gonna get a major workout up and down the 71.

The only problem with that is there is nothing in Columbus to put on the bus so it might return to Cleveland with no one on it. Maybe McKenzie but he has get over the shakes first.

You’re not far off. The cupboard is nearly empty. Logan Allen (just off IL a few days ago), Scott Moss (0-3, 5.79 ERA) and McKenzie are only current Clippers pitchers on Tribe’s 40 man roster. Carlos Vargos (currently on 60 day IL) is only pitcher at Akron on the 40 man roster.

There are a few pitchers at Cbus and Akron who are not yet on the 40 man yet but have had good starts to their season. But if we thought they rushed McKenzie too fast.....
