Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

So, Boeheim fires off a quote about how Waiters was "the best player I ever coached". Well, then...if that's true, why did he only play about 24 minutes a game?

It's why I pointed out in a previous post I could really care-less what Boeheim has to say before this quote even surfaced.

Boeheim isn't in the business of telling NBA teams they took a massive reach on one of his players. Boeheim is probably walking around with a 14 hour boner now that his sixth man was just taken #2 overall. I'm sure that will be bad for recruiting...

It appears management did not go into this blind and as most of us stated at one point or another, we did not expect the Cavs to bring in "4 rookies" in this draft.

My question for those of you that did not like the Cavs picks: What would you have done after reading this thread?

IMO, I think both Waiters and Zeller are solid pickups for the Cavs and make the team better.

I have no doubt Chris Grant put a lot of effort and research into the pick. It still seems like a massive reach, just as the Marvin Williams pick was when he was in Atlanta. And just as Tristan Thompson was last year.

Taking college sixth men in the top 5 of the NBA draft doesn't seem like a recipe for success, IMO.

A massive reach when he was in everyones top 7 ? I'll give you a reach,
but massive? Nah. Thompson turned out pretty good for a massive reach, too.

he could have gone as high as 5 if cleveland takes thomas robinson. cleveland fans are just looking for a reason to bitch, but the rationale behind said bitching has been shoddy at best.

bottom line is the cavs only wanted to bring in two guys. they did. they picked the #4 and #12 guys on their board using picks 4, 24, 33, 34. both guys play a position of need, and have styles that fit cleveland's offense well. one guy was picked right around where he was slotted, and the cavs lucked out on the 2nd one, who was slotted anywhere from 11-16 falling in their laps, mostly due to who was picking in the mid teens.

For me, it'd prob have started last year when the Cavs reached on Thompson over a young talented center in Jonas Valaciunas. I think most Cavs fans in tune with last years draft felt the same way. But Thompson had high analytics behind him just like Dion Waiters does.

But had the Cavs been willing to take Jonas at center, this year Thomas Robinson would have been a no-brainer.

And the jury is still out on Tristan. He showed some flashes but also looked like a one-dimensional player on the offensive end only capable of put-backs. If Jonas V comes out this year and looks as good as most scouts and experts assume he will, the pick of Thompson is going to look pretty bad. BTW, it has been stated in various places, had Jonas been eligible for this draft, he'd have been the hands down #2 player chosen.

A number of the guys picked before Zeller were guys I was hoping would be there when the Cavs picked 24. TBH, if the Cavs had stood pat, I think they would have been lucky to get one decent player from the three picks. Next year, we have 2 for sure, maybe 3 first round picks to try and find maybe 2 more good players.

There is a very simple reason why Waiters didn't start at Syracuse. They were a top five team, some picked to win the national championship. Syracuse also that had had 2 returning starting guards who had come back for their senior year. Bottom line Waiters was by far the most talented player on a good team.

He had an attitude, and Scoop was a senior.

I don't really think he'll make much of a pro....but you guys are overrating him being a 6th man and his bad game against Ohio State.

And this is what I don't understand. The knock on Austin Rivers was that he had an attitude problem. The knock on Harrison Barnes was that he disappeared in the tournament.

So... we take a guy who has an attitude and a guy who disappeared in the tournament?

In addition to that, we never even had an opportunity to watch the guy work out or interview him to potentially alleviate some of those concerns. Probably because his agent has figured out that the more NBA teams know about the player, the less they like him.

If, for example, people had been talking about Waiters going into the tournament and then he turns in that [Mark May]burger performance against OSU, he probably drops down to the 20s. Or if he works out, teams can then begin to pick apart his game or ask him tough questions about his willingness to be coached. But since no one was paying any attention to him, he sneaks up to #4. It's just all so non-sensical to me.

EDIT: And just for clarification for the insane Dwyane Wade comparisons. DWade in the 2003 Regional Finals vs. Kentucky: 29 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists. Waiters in the 2012 Regional Finals vs. Ohio State: 2-8 fgs for 9 points. Let's just stop with the dream comps. Wade and Waiters aren't close to being in the same vicinity of being comparable players.
