Cleveland Cavs (2016 NBA Champions)

The Cavs have lost three of the last five to some pretty mediocre competition. They need Kyrie and Shump back before we can make any definitive statements, but I wonder if it's too early to hit the panic button. This team will almost definitely find itself in the Finals once again, but the Warriors have been historically great this season. Is an improved Cleveland bench enough to get it done?

Way too early to even consider panicking. They're just out of sync... In December. They still have these problems in mid-March, then it's a bit of an issue.

The problem defensively is that they allow too much penetration, and mozgov has been terrible. On offense, you refuse to let love get the ball and hope that the rest of the team is missing shots. Both of these more obvious issues are fixed with shump and kyrie returning.

Yeah, the lack of touches on the offensive end for Love is a bit annoying, but still no reason to be panicking in December.

I didn't watch most of the game last night, but it sounds like the Cavs found a small ball lineup that worked at least for a half and I can imagine things will only get better when Kyrie and Shump return. The Cavs seem to be treading water right now since Mo fell back to Earth after his hot start. Once Kyrie comes back and they can limit Mo to 15-20 minutes off the bench he should improve against 2nd units. I'm looking forward to a lineup of Kyrie, Shump, JR, Lebron, and Love against the Warriors on Christmas. The Cavs might be the only team in the NBA than have the pieces to go small against the Warriors with good results, but a lot of that relies on how well Love can play Green at the 5. If he can win that battle the Warrior might have to go big so that the Cavs have to play offensive black holes like Timo or TT at the 5.

For the most part.. I'm making no assessment of the Cavs... including the last couple weeks.. because I expect there to be no semblance of the same team as it will be starting next week

I have been assessing what I think of the bench... and wish I'd see more of that monster Russian (Kaun) getting some minutes and sitting Moz down for a couple weeks

I agree. They need to see what Kaun can bring and Timo hasn't been himself yet this season. A couple weeks of rest and maybe a couple more weeks of hard core conditioning might be good for him. Once they get him healthy it might not be a bad idea to send him to Canton for a week or so to play 40 minutes a game as the focal point of the offense.

RIP John "Hot Rod" Williams

http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2015/12/r-i-p-hot-rod-we-love-you/

Hot Rod was among the Cleveland Cavalier franchise leaders in blocks (2nd, 1200), steals (6th, 587), offensive rebounds (2nd, 1620), rebounds (3rd, 4669), and points (7th, 8504). He also was among the best in franchise history for many of the more advanced statistics such as Win Shares (5th, 58.3), Box Plus/Minus (9th, 2.0), and VORP1 (5th, 21.1). But, while reciting box score numbers might remind us of his value to those teams on the court, they fall empty when regarding his value to the fans, the team, and the communities he affected.

Timo and Shump looked like the guys that finished the season last year tonight. Watching the first part of this season without Shump I forgot how good of a defender he is. Once Kyrie comes back I have a feeling this team is going to be really fun to watch.
