Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

I'd love to see Whitner in Cleveland - hits like Ward and the last couple seasons (especially the most recent) has become much more disciplined in coverage. Crazy to think he's still only 28.

even crazier when you consider ward is 27. when you really don't have that sizable a drop off, and have a guy that will come much cheaper, it has to be considered. it's hard to swallow the notion of tj ward getting upwards of $8 million per. but then again, sam shields is now the third highest paid cb in the nfl.

Worth noting the last two former Buckeye veteran free agents to come to Cleveland (that I recall) both had their careers ended before the first regular season snap. (Spielman, Bentley).

Didn't need that jinx. I'm just happy we're taking a run at not only one of the more beloved Buckeye defenders in the past decade - but a true local boy as well. If this happens I'm picking up Whitner gear.

This is a strange year when it comes to free agency. Usually you hear about guys visiting teams or a lot more talk about teams getting in touch with agents.. This year has been somewhat quiet and I just wonder if that is because of the Browns new FO oor maybe there is not anything to talk about and maybe no one is visiting.

it's really league wide right now. there's very little scuttlebutt going around about a lot of guys. so, perhaps a lot of teams are waiting to see some FA' set the market and then start making moves as a result.

Aside from being an Ohio State alum, I'm not sure Whitner is a real upgrade. He still hits like a ton of bricks, but his coverage skills are very iffy...personally, I'd pass unless he comes fairly cheap. As a Niners fan, I'm not too broken up about him moving on.

PFF rates him as one of the better coverage safeties last year.
Well, maybe it was just that his screw ups came at the wrong times. But I can think of a few plays where he was beaten at some very inopportune moments. Particularly Seattles go-ahead TD in the NFCCG. He had a couple gaffes in the Superbowl against Baltimore too. Overall, I'm just not a big fan of his in the NFL.

Whitners coverage is comparable and in cases better than Ward - if he's cheaper on the books, an automatic upgrade.
