Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

Let's face it, the (new) Browns owners (both Lerner and now Haslam) haven't been able to hardly do anything right. They can't get front office people they like, hire a head coach that they want to keep, and draft decent players (including a franchise quarterback).

Do you think that the NFL would give the the city a "muligan" here, i.e. make Haslam move them to Los Angles (naming them something else) and give Cleveland a new expansion team (and new owners) so the Browns could just start over?

The Cleveland fans sure deserve something better than what they are currently getting.

I do not completely understand the transition tag. All I know is that if another team signs him we get a compensation pick. I highly doubt if any other team is going to spend $10.3 million for a center for 1 year. I guess this was used on Steve Hutchinson a few years back. Still I am a little confused about it.

I would not worry about the guards. We can get one cheap one in free agency and draft a rookie if we really need too. I guess Swartz's brother is a FA again so he is a possibility at guard. I do not know how Greco will work in the zone blocking scheme. Maybe he will work out and he has 4 years remaining on his contract.

The key I think with the transition tag is we have 5 days to match any offer. Yes, they can still negotiate a long term contract, or Mack can just sign the 1 year contract that goes with the transition tag (which is $1.5 million cheaper than if they gave him a franchise tag) Or Mack can try to sign a contract offer with another team and then the Browns can just match it. So overall, good move by the Browns.

I have no problem letting Ward go. He is a run stopping safety in a league where safeties need to be better at the pass than run. No reason to pay him big bucks at all.

you do not get any compensation picks if another team signs mack. cleveland gets 5 days to match whatever offer sheet mack signs under the transition tag. if mack doesn't sign any offer sheet, he basically plays on a one year deal in cleveland for $10 million and change.

For you Johnny haters the Browns did not interview him at the combine BUT Coach Pet said that is no big deal because there is plenty of time to interview guys they are interested in.
On a bright note, the Browns are not going to race ticket prices this year.

PineY explained that in the post above yours except for the compensation part… So thanks I think

The reason this worries me is the soundbytes are starting to sound Lombardi-esqe...like they are trying to be the smartest guys in the room and out-poker everyone. Everyone knows we are at least looking at him, I wish they would stop the "That's just what they are expecting us to do" crap and gather as much information as they can. But that's just me I guess.

I think the Browns are going to go hard after Byrd, which would be a great move because he is a top five safety in this league.

I'm starting to lean towards taking Mr. Sammy Watkins with the first pick or trading back and gathering more picks because this draft is deep, very deep.

well, I do not think that they are fooling anyone but if they want to think that way I guess we might as well let them. I am on board being okay with them drafting Johnny Unlike most posters:wink:

.
Byrd supposedly turned down $10 million from Buffalo and if we had to pay that much I just do not know because we are going to have to talk to Haden one of these days and hopefully that is sooner rather than later. Awful lot of money to tie up in the defensive backfield.

It's a passing league though, now more than ever, so if we are going to tie up money, then quality starting DBs is a good place to do it in my IMO.

That was supposedly the value of the first 3 years of a potential deal, but Buffalo's total offer to Byrd was surely much less than $10M/year -- had they offered that much, he'd probably be a Bill still, considering that getting paid like the top safety in the league was basically his demand after getting franchised last season. He just wants to get paid, and he will, but Buffalo could have franchised him again for $8.4M and decided against it. Yet another NFL star drafted and developed by the Bills, only to get away in the prime of his career. Sigh.

I'm not totally against the idea of Manziel but he does carry a very high bust potential. I'm on board with taking the absolute best players available and going from there. If you draft Watkins at 4 or another good reciever with the second first rounder I think Hoyer can do enough to manage the game with that many options on offense as long as we get a decent back at some point. You can hold off till next year and finding a qb. Not to mention as it stands now we need big time inside linebacker help.

Haden will get his extension done at some point and he will be paid handsomely but that does not mean that you do not pursue a top 5 safety that knows your head coaches system and can be a leader on D.

If anyone is on board with taking the BPA then you have to go elsewhere besides Manziel. Sorry, I'd label him at high bust potential. He's smaller than Colt McCoy with some better quicks in his running ability. Nothing more.

I'm not super high on any of these qbs period. Might be a solid starter or two out of the whole group but no put the team on their back and carry them like a super star. Manziel is the only one with that potential but he has a lot to learn and to prove to ever come anywhere near that and like I said above has a high potential to bust.

I agree with that. I am just saying that I will not jump off of a bridge if they do take Johnny but they do take a QB I am more a fan of Bortles. If you really want to go BPA at #4,, you better prepare yourself for a OT like Jake Matthews or Greg Robinson because in all likelihood one of those guys might be sitting there and if you want to talk value those guys are value at #4.

I agree with Bucklion and yourself regarding Byrd after further thought. This is a passing league and if we could get him and move Gipson to SS that would be ideal. However, I also think we need another CB either through FA or the draft.

I will not address the post that compared Colt McCoy to Johnny… that was just silly.
