Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

Campbell, Weedster, Rubin (unless he restructures) and Bess will most likely be bye-bye.

Not a huge loss, this team has a ton of cash to throw around in free agency. Combine that with smart QB play and a decent draft. There is noise to be made in the AFC north.
I have mixed emotions about Rubin. Everything that I have read seems very positive about the guy with him being a high motor guy and a leader. However, on the other side of that, if he is a team player, since he is in his last year of his contract he could renegotiate for a few more years on a lesser scale.

Well, I hope personally that they find it palatable to keep Rubin, whatever that ends up looking like... much like the conversations we had last year about Sheard being expendable... there is a pile of cap room and they are good football players and I don't know that they have the luxury to let good football players walk if the cost benefit is just money (as opposed to actual cap give and take). Its the NFL, and you have depth until you don't... and don't usually comes pretty fast.

Tell you what, pay him for this year if he negotiates an extention for less for a couple/three more.

By all means I agree. While he isn't an 'elite' space eater - he's a 6th round pick that has blossomed into a quality football player. He might be getting paid a bit over his head but I have no issue shelling out money to high motor guys. However, the volume of 'shelling' out that money can be weighed. I think he should get paid, but being a top 6 earner on the team? No thanks.

Not a bad suggestion with swallowing his contract this year and giving an extension at a restructured amount the following years. I think Rubin would be willing to do that.

Weeden is currently set to make $2.204 million against the cap in 2014. Weeden is under contract through 2015 and isn't due bonuses on any particular date, so there is no rush to parting ways with Weeden prior to the draft. Here is the unique stipulation associated with Weeden, though: if you read the introduction of this article, Weeden would basically be equivalent to "Player X." By that, I mean that in 2014, it is cheaper for the Browns to keep Weeden on the roster than if they cut him. If the Browns cut Weeden, he will count for $4.204 million against the cap this year.

His agent is a fucking wizard.

According to the latest figures if we have to tag Mack it will cost us more than $11 mil. I do not think that he is worth that much but we will not know by Monday, 4 PM which is the deadline for tagging.

If they tag him can they then work out a contract that includes this season? I'd give him $20 mil against the cap this year if I could get him under 2 mil for the next 4 years.
$20 mil this year is a little much IMO. I know about front loading contracts but you have to set aside around $10 million for rookies and signings during the year plus you have Ward to deal with so there goes more than 2/3 of the money we have available so we would not be able to bring in many free agents unless I am missing something.

According to reports, the Browns have put a transition tag on Mack which gives them 5 days to match any offer that another team would make. I think he can still negotiate with the Browns but I am unsure of all the details of a transition tag.

I guess he can sign with the Browns for $10 million for one year. That is almost $2 million more than the highest paid center in the NFL. That is way too much IMO

That would be a shit ton of money wrapped up in the Oline. That's not including the fact our guard play needs to be addressed.

Side note: I do hope Joe Thomas is recovering well and back to 100%. There were times when it was painful to watch some of the holding last year.

I do not completely understand the transition tag. All I know is that if another team signs him we get a compensation pick. I highly doubt if any other team is going to spend $10.3 million for a center for 1 year. I guess this was used on Steve Hutchinson a few years back. Still I am a little confused about it.

I would not worry about the guards. We can get one cheap one in free agency and draft a rookie if we really need too. I guess Swartz's brother is a FA again so he is a possibility at guard. I do not know how Greco will work in the zone blocking scheme. Maybe he will work out and he has 4 years remaining on his contract.

No tag applied to Ward. I can't imagine Farmer wanting to lock up that kind of cash in the secondary should we take a run at Bryd and then an extension for Haden. I'm still in favor of drafting another CB if the BPA scenario presents itself in the 2nd round. Our depth is scary thin should (god forbid) Haden be lost for a couple games.
