Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

It will be interesting to see if they try to get Rubin to restructure because if he does not I think he may go the way of Jackson but not sure. Also, interesting to see what happens with Robertson since he is a restricted free agent.

I really think they need to re-sign Ward just for leadership purposes on defense.

Correction: Robertson is not exclusive rights free agent so the Browns could let him go..

Radio speculation this morning was they cut DQ to free up extra money for re-signing Mack and Ward to long-term deals, and possibly extending Gordon and/or Cameron...don't know if any of that is true, but that was the discussion.

Also an NFL insider on the other night "guaranteed" that Rex Grossman would be signed by the Browns as a Kyle Shanahan 3rd string system guy.

they tried to restructure jackson's deal and he wanted none of it. the browns definitely aren't in a cap situation where they need to free up extra cash to sign guys long term, especially considering dumping rubin and jackson alone would just about make up the difference in pay for ward and mack. i really think the browns didn't want to shell out $8 million for mediocre lb play this year. i still think you'll see arthur moats and a draft pick lined up as the starting ILB's on opening day.

by the by, it was florio that guaranteed the grossman signing.

Grossi speculation on possible surprises:
Analysis: It would be a shocker if Hoyer did not return. But what if Houston coach and former New England coordinator Bill O’Brien came calling with a trade offer to land Hoyer as Houston’s veteran mentor to its young quarterback in the draft? Ward probably did not benefit from the coaching change and could be allowed to leave via free agency. Schwartz was under fire of the old regime; his status with the new one is uncertain. Rubin truly is a treasure – a big man with a non-stop motor. His $8.175 million cap figure now is fourth on the team.

Ward may not be the type of player Pettine wants in a SS or FS...hard to say right now.

I guess that begs the question of what the more effective pairing would be - Gipson & Ward or
Gipson and Bryd ? Since Pettine requires his safeties to be interchangeable. (Going on the speculation that if we let Ward go the front office would take a run at Bryd)

While I agree with you, it is somewhat of a tricky situation. I am not sure about the timelines involved but I think that Farmer would have to know about Byrd before letting Ward walk.

Some really good articles regarding the salary cap but the one that really caught my eye was this part on Weeden

Weeden is currently set to make $2.204 million against the cap in 2014. Weeden is under contract through 2015 and isn't due bonuses on any particular date, so there is no rush to parting ways with Weeden prior to the draft. Here is the unique stipulation associated with Weeden, though: if you read the introduction of this article, Weeden would basically be equivalent to "Player X." By that, I mean that in 2014, it is cheaper for the Browns to keep Weeden on the roster than if they cut him. If the Browns cut Weeden, he will count for $4.204 million against the cap this year.

Also Campbell might as well start packing his bags because he will count $3.25 million against the cap this season and is due a little roster bonus in March..

Campbell, Weedster, Rubin (unless he restructures) and Bess will most likely be bye-bye.

Not a huge loss, this team has a ton of cash to throw around in free agency. Combine that with smart QB play and a decent draft. There is noise to be made in the AFC north.
