Cleveland Browns (2014 Season)

WOW WOW WOW per rotoworld

"Multiple league sources" tell Profootballtalk the Browns nearly acquired 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh in a trade before hiring Mike Pettine to replace Rob Chudzinski.

That would qualify as a bombshell. Per PFT, a deal that would have sent "multiple" draft picks to San Francisco was "in place" before Harbaugh decided he wanted to remain with the 49ers.

Per multiple league sources, the Cleveland Browns nearly pulled off a trade with the 49ers for the rights to coach Jim Harbaugh.

A deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to San Francisco was in place between the teams. But Harbaugh ultimately decided not to leave the 49ers.

Jimbo is smarter than I usually give him credit for, at least in this instance.

Sounds like a bullshit rumor started who knows where. "Multiple league sources" lol. Makes zero sense at all from the niners side. It's no coincidence the 49ers franchise turned around when Harbaugh was hired. They have a shit ton of draft choices already, and the coaching market wasn't particularly strong this season. On top of that, I don't think they have anybody already on staff that could approach Harbaugh's coaching acumen. Roman and Fangio are outstanding coordinators, but unproven commodities as head coaches. Don't buy it for a second.

A source tells CSN Bay Area that the 49ers won't pay coach Jim Harbaugh "like a Super Bowl winning-coach" until he wins the Super Bowl.

According to reporter Matt Maiocco, Harbaugh's long-term future with the 49ers "remains uncertain." If the source's report is true, it's a baffling hardball stance from a team that's reached three straight NFC Championship Games under its prodigy head coach. The news comes on the heels of Profootballtalk's report that Harbaugh was nearly traded to the Browns. The 49ers vehemently denied the report, but the Browns made no such effort. Harbaugh is currently signed through 2015, but it would behoove both sides to hammer out an extension this offseason. The 49ers would be wise to pay Harbaugh what he wants.

Tony Grossi, sort of implies the rumor may have come from Lombardi (who I suspect was the source if information all last season}

"While such a deal seems outlandish on a number of fronts, here are some factors to consider:

* In his Jan. 15 letter to fans asking for patience during the Browns’ coaching search, owner Jimmy Haslam wrote that he knew all along some of the team’s candidates would be involved in the playoffs.

* The 49ers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 19.

* Harbaugh is good friends with former Browns GM Mike Lombardi. CBS announcer Jim Nantz claims that Lombardi gave Harbaugh his first NFL coaching job with the Oakland Raiders in 2002. Lombardi’s oldest son, Mick, is a personal assistant to Harbaugh now. Lombardi's youngest son, Matt, remains employed by the Browns as an entry-level assistant in the personnel department.

* During the Browns’ coaching search, the relationship between Lombardi and then-Browns CEO Joe Banner worsened rapidly. Lombardi could have seen an acquisition of Harbaugh as a sure means of ousting Banner and gaining control of football operations with Harbaugh.

* Harbaugh’s relationship with 49ers management reportedly has become increasingly strained. Harbaugh has two years remaining on his contract and there have been differences about an extension. The 49ers have reached the NFC Championship Game twice and the Super Bowl once in three seasons with Harbaugh as coach.

* When the deal with San Francisco fell through, Pettine was hired on Jan. 23.

* After Lombardi failed to deliver on another coaching candidate, and the rift between Banner and Lombardi became evident, Haslam fired them both on Feb. 11 and replaced Lombardi as GM with Ray Farmer. At that time, Haslam said of Pettine, "I think we got the best head coach we could get."

Haslam declined to comment further and said through Gilbert the Browns would stand by their statement."

Boy, there's a ringing endorsement.
