That would be a great value pick but I'm just not sure he'll be there in the late third. If Holmgren likes him as much as it seems he does, I would not be surprised to see him take him in the second.

if he REALLY likes him then I suppose that would be okay, but I stand by what I said awhile ago, defense defense defense in this draft, and then worry about a QB for the future next year

I'm afraid that if they don't take McCoy in the second this year that it would put them in a position where they feel like they have to take a QB in the first next year. I'd rather they reach on a QB in a second round than continue the cycle of reaching for a QB in a first round.

Plus, I for one do like him that much as a QB.

McCoy will not be there in the third, right now I'm not positive he will be there in the second when the Browns pick. I like Berry at 7, if he isn't there find some way to trade back. I really like McCoy in the 2nd. Hateinhiney there is no way the Browns are taking another Wideout in the second this year.

I think all of us tend to sell Holmgren short by repeating that he has said "draft defense and trade/FA for offense". That is such a simplistic view and I believe that Holmgren has much more football smarts than to follow a simple plan like that.

And I think the recent trade for a CB and LB support my point about Holmgren not following a simple model for building a franchise. I think Holmgren will do whatever is necessary, be it trade/draft/FA for offense or defense. With all things being equal maybe the simplistic "draft defense and trade/FA for offense" is a decent base plan to employ, but all things are not equal with the state of the Browns that Holmgren inherited.

As far as this draft is concerned, if Berry is there at #7, I think the Browns grab him. If he is not there, I think the Browns will either look at taking Odrick or trade down. I also think/hope that the Browns will take Colt McCoy in the 2nd round. Personally, I prefer McCoy over the Golden Emu especially in the type of offense that will evolve in Cleveland.

Basically... after Berry the defensive talent drops where it just feels like a reach picking anyone else. I just hope there is a trade partner. Because dropping down and grabbing an extra 2nd round pick would be really nice in this draft.

I obviously missed it, but what happened to Haden as the pick at #7?

Sheldon Brown, mediocre workouts.

It appears this board isn't the only one cold on the prospects of drafting the golden emu...

Dawg Talkers Message Boards: Clausen

...and here's a pretty good breakdown on his positives/negatives. A lot of the negs sound awfully similar to one Bradeward Quinn:

rterback | Notre Dame | JR
Jimmy Clausen
Height: 6-2⅝ | Weight: 222 | 40-Time: 4.75
Jimmy Clausen | Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Official Bio

Stars
Strengths:
Good height and bulk --- Arm strength is more than adequate and can make all of the necessary throws --- Great throwing mechanics with a quick delivery --- Super accurate passer with terrific touch, timing and anticipation --- Very smart with an excellent football IQ --- Knows how to operate under center, recognize blitzes, read coverages and go through progressions --- Takes care of the ball --- Able to buy time in the pocket with his feet --- Can throw on the run --- Tough and will play through pain and injuries --- Is confident with a fiery field presence and ice water in his veins --- Hard worker --- Media savvy and has proven that he can handle the spotlight --- Experienced --- Superb bloodlines.

Weaknesses:
Borderline cocky and entitled with a personality that rubs some people the wrong way --- Not a great athlete --- Can be overly cautious and too quick to check down, throw the ball away or take a sack --- Has to windup to really zip the ball --- Floats the deep ball at times --- Might not have a ton of upside --- Is still maturing --- Durability is a concern.

Notes:
Was a three-year starter for the Fighting Irish --- Brothers Casey and Rick both played quarterback at Tennessee --- Started getting national media attention in middle school and was labeled the "LeBron James of College Football" --- Was a celebrated recruit who won just about every prep award and honor imaginable --- Began working with highly-regarded quarterback guru Steve Clarkson in the 8th grade then spent three seasons under the tutelage of offensive mastermind Charlie Weis in college --- Underwent surgery to repair a minor injury to the elbow on his throwing arm in 2007 --- Played through a painful toe injury in 2009 that eventually required surgery to repair a couple of torn ligaments following the season --- Voted a captain by his teammates in 2009 --- One of the most prolific passers in Notre Dame history despite only playing three seasons --- Made major strides in the leadership department as a junior, showing a much better on-field demeanor and taking his team on a number of impressive game-winning fourth quarter drives --- Extensive experience running a pro style system, a factor which can't be underestimated in this day and age of the spread offense --- Was essentially groomed to be an NFL quarterback from a very young age and has somehow managed to live up to sky-high expectations in the face of intense scrutiny --- The worry is that some of the Jay Cutler-esque qualities of his personality could begin to take their toll in the locker room if he lands in a bad situation or with a dysfunctional franchise --- A polished signal caller with an outstanding pedigree and all of the tools to be a top-notch starter at the next level.

Clausen has ice water in his veins? based on what exactly? not shitting his pants when they lose to USC every year? epic showdowns against unranked opponents? monumental bowl victories over Hawaii?

Who knows, maybe he does have ice water in his veins, but I can't think of a single game he played in at Notre Dame where that could even be determined.

I don't quite understand this at all. I mean Heckert just saw him play last year in the NFL why would they trade for him if he is just a mediocre player and is not going to fill the bill.

I also agree with prof's post above. It supports much of what I have been thinking.

I didn't say Brown had mediocre workouts, I said the reason Haden isn't being mentioned anymore is because they traded for Brown and Hadens stock has dropped some because of his workouts.

Hadnot's replacement. We should have kept Hadnot.

CLEVELAND -- The Browns have confirmed the signing of former Bengals offensive lineman Eric Ghiaciuc.

Ghiaciuc (pronounced guy-check) was a fourth-round draft choice of the Bengals in 2005. In four seasons in Cincinnati, he made 42 starts, mostly at center. He spent time with the Chiefs and Chargers in 2009.

Ghiaciuc figures to be the veteran backup center and interior swingman on the Browns' offensive line. They were without a backup center after releasing Hank Fraley and allowing Rex Hadnot to leave in free agency. His signing lessens the pressure of drafting an interior lineman with center experience.
? Tennessee safety Eric Berry is visiting the Browns today, according to multiple reports.

Berry is a prime contender to be the Browns' first draft pick at No. 7 overall, if he is available.

? Former Browns receiver Mike Furrey will pick up another off-field award when he is honored for community by the NFL Players Gala featuring the JB Awards on April 14.

Furrey was one of three finalists this year for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. Furrey is an unrestricted free agent and has not been re-signed by the Browns.

I agree. I think that it probably wouldn't be such a wild concept to take McCoy in the 2nd and perhaps try to grab Shipley in the early 4th if he's there. I know it's not everything, but those two have amazing chemistry.

Well since we were talking about how Colt McCoy played better defenses than Clausen I guess I could see where Chris Johnson would come into the argument. The facts are there, the Big12 had horrible defense in 08 and only a little better in 09.

I would say if you're comparing defenses, Clausen probably played against better defenses than McCoy. Clausen played again USC and some Big 10 teams, although not OSU. Generally Big 12 is not known for defense, they're mostly known for lopsided offensive production.

Clausen probably had more talented skill players, but he didn't have the O-line that Texas had. I think the biggest thing that strikes me against McCoy is his lack of guts. Biggest stage of college football he gets injured. He may or may not have been exagerating the circumstance, I've heard his arm wasn't nearly as bad as he made it out to be and him sitting the NC game had everything to do with his NFL career and Draft status if he came up short, however we'll never know if thats true. Jimmy gutted it out all season with torn ligaments in his foot, not quite turf toe as previously thought. They've got two interesting articles right now on Clausen on ESPN's NFL page, one on Draft status and one on his throwing motion.

I seriously hope the Browns don't pick a QB in the first two rounds, it never works for them. Clausen could probably end up with San Francisco or Seattle, probably not before then and quite possibly he could fall later depending on Bradford and McCoy. We all know the Browns are passing on all these guys anyway, they're gonna pick up Tebow in the 5th round
