With the right moves, the Cleveland Browns need not change their head coach: Terry Pluto's Talkin'

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The New Year's edition of Sunday's Talkin' ...
About Eric Mangini...
1. Mike Holmgren should keep Eric Mangini as coach, but only if Mangini is open to making significant changes to his offensive approach. I'm talking about the coaching staff and with some schemes. This is not about questioning Brian Daboll's work ethic or character. Nor is it to say the offensive coordinator has had an easy job -- forced to work with five different quarterbacks in his first two years. But last season, the Browns ranked dead last (32nd) in offense. This season, it's 29th. In terms of points per game, it's 31st (17.5 points).
2. The Browns president can't bring Mangini into his office and say, "Eric, meet Joe Playcaller, he's your new offensive coordinator." They need some long talks on what offense works best for Colt McCoy, and what coaches would work best with that offense. A good offense is built around a quarterback, and Holmgren (who insisted the Browns draft McCoy) should have some ideas on this subject. I do think Mangini will be open to suggestions and changes.

If the Browns bring in Fox or Mornhinweg that would be disastrous and would show that Holmgren doesn't have a clue. I would rather see them keep Mangini then to hire either of these two ass clowns as the next head coach.

The NFL is the only place I know that a guy can get fired from his last job as a head coach (usually because they SUCK) and get hired a year or two later as a head coach somewhere else.

If it isn't Gruden then just don't bother making the change. At least Gruden has a Super Bowl ring. Fox would be the next closest to that in the fact that he got to the NFC Championship game. But Mornhinweg is just a total tool.....

Completely agree. I don't want another retread.

I'm with billmac on this one.

Keep Mangini and work with a new Offensive Coordinator OR the only other option is to try to keep Rob Ryan in house and promote him to Head Coach. It looks like Ryan is going to get a HC shot somewhere next year, and I wouldn't mind it being in Cleveland.

The problem I see with Fox is his consistency or lack their of. One year the team would look like world beaters and the next year they would be lucky to compete. He arguably had a plethora of talent on the team up until this year and really wasted it.

I agree with the inconsistency with Fox. If he's their best option I'd rather them just stick with Mangini. But, that being said..

Fox has been to a SuperBowl and 2 NFC title games (1-1). I think he's a pretty decent team saddled with a mediocre franchise, but I don't see him as much of an upgrade over Mangini.

Agreed. Fox had some pretty good teams in his days with the Panthers. They used to have a pretty nasty defense and a very good running game to go along with Delhomme when he wasn't worthless.

I'm thinking they had a top 3 defense in the NFL a couple times, and it would suit the division very well. They were tough.

Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to interview for Carolina job, report says

CLEVELAND -- Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is on the list to interview for the Panthers head coaching job, John Czarnecki of foxsports.com reported today.
Ryan said Fridayy that he had a "really, really good feeling'' that he'd get an interview, but couldn't share with which team because he's not allowed to be contacted until the season is over.
San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is also a possible candidate, Czarnecki said. Current Panthers coach John Fox has been told he's gone and is rumored to be on the Browns' short list of candidates if team president Mike Holmgren fired Eric Mangini on Monday.
Fox is 2-13 heading into today's game against the Falcons, but is still widely regarded as an excellent head coach. Ryan has made no secret of the fact he wants to be a head coach by next season. His defense ranks in the top 10 in several key categories, including points allowed (7th) and red zone (6th).

Then they hired the D Coordinator from the Colts who couldn't field a decent defense when he was there...

Makes sense, right?

Chris Mortensen re-tweeted this, so I'm guessing it's legitimate.

Just thought about this. What a big step down for Mangini if true. You'd think someone would still want him as a d-coordinator in the NFL or something. UConn just seems like a big downgrade.

I do not think that Mangini would stay if Holmgren dictated that he hired a new OC. Not many HC's in the NFL like to be told who they should hire as assistant coaches. Plus, Mangini has to be agreeing with what his current OC is doing right now.

I also am getting to the point where if Ryan wants to leave I would almost open the door for him. I think other teams are finding ways to exploit his Star Wars defense and are running right through it. Maybe it's because of the talent the Browns have or Maybe it's because of the system. One of the two puts absolutely no pressure on the opposing QB.

Maybe he is more fit for a college job plus he would not have to go very far to do his summer camp and the players could ride the bus again because of the proximity.

Personally I can't stand Bill Cowher, but that's only because he coached the Steelers. A few winning seasons would change my mind. The way his Steelers won with strong D and pounding the ball up the middle, I'd love to see him do that in Cleveland. If only we had the personal to do that!

Plus, I think he was on the team during Red Right 88, so who "gets" the town more than that?

Now that the season is over, it's time to look forward to the best part of a Brown's fan year... the draft. Staying away from a QB, RB, and WR in the first round, I wonder how Peterson or Fairly would turn out if they are there in the 6th pick. I haven't seen much of the other defensive players predicted in the top 10.
