Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

Did Weis oversell Brady Quinn to Browns?

There's a huge perception among fans in Cleveland that Brady Quinn is a quality starting quarterback in the NFL. Fueling this fire is Charlie Weis and his evaluation of Quinn. But what Weis thinks, and what others who worked for and with Weis at New England think, are vastly different. And no matter how close they may be, there's nothing that Weis can say to change their mind. In fact, when Josh McDaniels was on the staff at New England, the Patriots did not have Quinn very high on their board, regardless of the wisdom stemming from Weis' evaluation. Taking this one step further, there were some well-respected personnel men in the NFL who did not want to take the Browns job (prior to Eric Mangini becoming the main man) because they didn't feel Quinn could be the starter. The expectations of the fans with regard to Quinn are enormous, and sometimes this can burden a franchise.

Cleveland Browns said to be sitting on trade offers for Brady Quinn and Braylon Edwards
by Tony Grossi/Plain Dealer Reporter
Monday April 13, 2009, 10:58 AM

CLEVELAND -- We've been reporting for weeks that the Browns sent word out in February that any player on the team is available for trade with the possible exception of left tackle Joe Thomas and inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson.

In a recent column, former Browns personnel chief Mike Lombardi writes that the Browns are sitting on first-round offers for both quarterback Brady Quinn and receiver Braylon Edwards.

He also writes the Browns "are really in love" with Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree at No. 5.

Lombardi bases his comments on conversations with sources from other NFL teams.

What bears noting is that Lombardi worked in Cleveland under coach Bill Belichick at the same time Eric Mangini and George Kokinis were getting their NFL starts as gophers with the Browns.

Notes From Lombardi: Sunday Edition
FROM MICHAEL LOMBARDI:
12 April 2009
1. Trade winds are blowing, and the Cleveland Browns seem to be making the most noise of any team. I hear from more than one NFL team that the Browns have a No. 1 pick on the table for Brady Quinn and are looking for more. However, it appears to the teams that I?ve talked to that the Browns will make the move to trade Quinn. There seem to be two teams very interested. They also will move Braylon Edwards and have at least a No. 1 pick on the table right now. Expect the Browns to have their team reshaped by the time the draft ends.

If they move Edwards (an idea I'm not crazy about) and pick up another 1st, I'm okay with them grabbing Crabtree. I'm not crazy about trading Quinn. I thought he looked really good on that Thursday Night game against Denver (okay, granted Denver's defense sucked), and he played hurt the rest of the year. I've seen enough of DA to be pretty confident he will never be close to what he was in his first 10-11 starts.

If they're really intent on blowing up the team, move both Edwards and Quinn and start off with three 1st rounders...fuck it.

the new regime is secretive about every single thing they do. nobody knew winslow was close to being traded until he showed up in tampa bay. yet, somehow, this info, along with their apparent love for sanchez has suddenly leaked, and by a guy that is a notorious quinn hater at that?

i don't think so.

this is simply leverage to make some moves on draft day and nothing more. there are probably two scenarios here that cleveland is trying to leverage.

Crabtree is a good player, maybe the best in the draft before his injury. With the Browns in full rebuild mode, I'll take any good players regardless of position.
I think he'll be a helluva player, but there are much more pressing needs than WR on the defensive side of the ball.

I love when I post in a Cleveland thread because I know it will always bring out the best in you:) I would like to know what two scenarios you are talking about. You would be hiding information from us would you:huh: While, I agree there is some skepticism to Lombardi's comments I did see a mock draft by slick Mel last week that had the Browns taking Crabtree at #5. Without any trades, I certainly would not do that but if they can get some first-round draft picks I would do it and then shore up the defense with the rest of them.

Yep. I'm also calling shenanigans. Nothing that's happened since day 1 of this regime should make us think that any trade rumor is anything short of a smoke screen.

Which if you traded Edwards and Quinn you would have a chance to fill with those two additional first round picks (at a lower price too). With the price tag that comes with have a pick in the top 5, I would rather take a player closer to the sure thing (Crabtree) over a boom-or-bust guy (Orakpo).

But then we would need someone to throw the ball to Crabtree:biggrin:

If they trade Edwards, WR suddenly becomes as pressing a need as any on the team - unless you're comfortable with having David Patten as your No. 1 receiver.

If they're gonna blow up the team I wouldn't mind seeing them blow it all the way up. The Browns have been stuck in the mud for ten years now. If you trade Edwards though, you pretty much have to draft a WR early or be aggressive with the remaining rounds of salary cap casualties.
