Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

Other than getting a turd in Orton, the Broncos completely took the Bears to the cleaners.

Don't tell Bears' fans.. I was in a pretty large debate on another forum and I was pretty much the only person who wasn't saying "AWESOME FOR THE BEARS, GREAT TRADE!!!!!"

Just my thoughts on this situation.....I'm expecting DA to be traded on draft day. I am of the belief that the Browns currently have a suitor for DA's services and that a trade scenario may already be in place. The trade would have to happen on draft day, in order for the Browns to keep their options open up to that point.

WTF? Seriously? What would they trade him for? A 5th and cash?

Brady Quinn will be the starting QB for the Browns, and I do not believe they truly have much interest in moving him, especially to Denver. The fact that McDaniels supposedly wants BQ over DA should tell us all something.....BQ just might be a better value. The kid wants to be a Cleveland Brown, and he's the prototype for the types of players that Mangini/Kokonis want to bring to Cleveland (smart, humble, hard working, good locker room guy, no drama, etc.). I like DA, and I'd hate to see him leave the team, but I think his days in Browns-town are nearing their end, for obvious reasons.

BQ might be better but then again we've seen less than 200 snaps for him (I think). The sample size is very small. Making broad assumptions about him at this point is like saying Sam Bradford is going to be in the NFL hall of fame.

I don't have a clue who they will draft at #5. Orakpo, Curry, Crabtree, trade down, blah, blah, blah. It's all situational. I do believe the Browns want to acquire as many first day picks as possible. I think DA will help with that. I like what ManKok is trying to do, now it's a matter of selling this mentality to the rest of the team. Guys like Edwards and Rogers could be hard pressed to buy into it. They're not exactly known for their "unselfishness." But I think it could work, and I believe it will.

Just my $0.02

I'll be absolutely SHOCKED to see them draft anything other than a Defensive player and I'll seriously consider boycotting them if they draft Crabtree at this point.

Obviously they've hit the bong too damned much.

Is Cutler better than Orton? Yeah he is, even without his diabetes treatments. Orton is a turd and being better than Dickfingers Grossman isn't exactly an accomplishment.

But to essentially trade any 3 very good picks and get Cutler and a 5th on a team that needs much more than a QB is retarded.

What I don't get is why would it be the Bears?

I mean, they like throwing to their Tight Ends and running the ball.
That's their game, unless they plan on opening up the passing for Cutler, who does he really have to throw too in Chicago?

Excatly. The dude was saying that QBs being in the draft don't pan out a lot of the time and that getting QBs via trades and free agency is the way to go. He referenced Drew Brees and Kurt Warner. Thing about them is that their teams didn't trade two firsts and a third for them. They were FAs. Also, the Bears were likely going to address a different need in the draft anyways, so he was going on an unrelated tangent. I also said that the teams who are winning are winning because of the draft. Pittsburgh, New England, Indy, etc.

They have many holes, you won't succeed if you have a bad team with a good QB. Look at Denver last year. You will succeed if you have a good team with a mediocre (sometimes worse) QB. Look at the Bears with Rex Grossman, Ravens with Dilfer.

That was kind of a vent.. I feel better now. I hate arguing with stupid people. It actually makes me angry.

For every QB that has failed in the first round, I can name a QB that flopped as a FA or trade....

The QB is only as good as the situation around him. Tim Couch and Jeff Gaycia are both proof of that. Cutler is going to be annoyed that he doesn't have Brandon Marshall to throw too anymore.

You're right it's steep. Then you add in the 3rd and the veteran backup QB...
Next year's pick will probably be another top-20 slot...

Denver now has pick 12, 18, 48, 79 & 84 in the first three rounds. They also have an extra pick in the 5th & 7th. Talk about some bartering power on draft day.

Orton can be adequate while the rookie develops.

Even with Cutler, do the Bears win the NFC North next year? I have my doubts.....

Nope.

Devin Hester and Rashied Davis vs. Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal
Playing for run-first Bears vs. playing for the throw 40 times per game Broncos

I have my doubts about Cutler's production being a big step up from Orton. I think Cutler is much better and will be a step up, but I don't see him putting up anything spectacular in Chicago. Maybe I'm just an idiot though.

Great trade for the Broncos. I like Cutler but no way should the Bears have given up that much. I'm really curious what other offers the Broncos might have received but unfortunately we'll likely never know. My guess is that the Bears blew those out of the water. Could we someday be referring to this as the Broncos version of the Herschel Walker trade?
