The last we'd heard from Joe Jurevicius, the Cleveland-born receiver talked enthusiastically about reaching his goal of playing one more NFL season and not letting complications from a staph infection end his career.
"I want to play here in Cleveland. If that doesn't happen, then the show goes on the road. But I'm going to play football next year," Jurevicius said on Dec. 18.
Well, the show is going on the road.
Jurevicius' contract was terminated by the Browns on Wednesday. He was due to make $2.4 million in the final season of a four-year contract he signed in 2006. The Browns may have tried to bring him back at the NFL minimum salary of $845,000 for veterans of 10 or more years -- the same concession made by offensive lineman Ryan Tucker.
"We were engaged in discussions starting at the NFL combine [three weeks ago]," General Manager George Kokinis said in a telephone interview. "We tried to work something out and it just ended up not coming to a conclusion. The effort was there. The talks with his representatives were respectful.
"Joe's done a lot. I know what he means to this team."
In a statement issued by agent Mark Humenik, Jurevicius indicated there was more than money involved in the Browns' decision.
The statement said, "As a Cleveland native and lifelong Browns fan, I always hoped to finish my career in brown and orange with my family and friends in the stands, and was even willing to take a steep pay cut to keep that dream alive, which is why I have such a heavy heart today."

Thumbs up on D.A.: The Browns intend to pay a $5 million roster bonus owed quarterback Derek Anderson on Friday, Kokinis indicated.
"I don't think we've changed from when we first talked about it," Kokinis said. "We're trying to get the best players on the team and he's one of them.
The bonus is guaranteed, so the Browns have little recourse but to pay it.
Lineman visits: St. Louis Rams unrestricted free-agent offensive lineman Adam Goldberg, 28, visited the Browns, according to his agent, Joe Linta.
Goldberg, 6-7, 318 pounds, started games at all guard and tackle spots in 2008, giving the Browns a lot of options with him. He made six starts last season and played in all 16 games.
Originally signed by the Vikings out of Wyoming as an undrafted free agent in 2004, he spent two years in Minnesota and three with the Rams after being traded there in 2006. Goldberg also has a chance to re-sign with the Rams.
Mum on two players: The Browns would not confirm that they had reached a an agreement with Jets linebacker David Bowens on a four-year contract and that Jets safety Abram Elam has signed a one-year offer sheet.
Bonus contracts handcuff Browns

A rash of cash roster bonuses, most owed to players today, has led to the release of at least two veteran Browns players and prompted the club's new management team to ask for relief from others.
The Browns released offensive lineman Kevin Shaffer Thursday rather than pay him a scheduled bonus of $1 million and $2.65 million base salary. Shaffer was considering whether to return at a reduced contract or enter free agency, agent Alan Herman said.
On Wednesday, the Browns released popular receiver Joe Jurevicius, who was owed a $250,000 bonus and $2.4 million base salary. Jurevicius declined a pay reduction to the NFL veteran minimum salary.
Almost $30 million more in roster bonuses is owed in contracts inherited by new General Manager George Kokinis and coach Eric Mangini.
The roll call:
? Defensive linemen Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams each is scheduled to receive $6 million in roster bonuses in contract extensions given by the Browns after trading for the players last March.
? Quarterback Derek Anderson has a guaranteed bonus of $5 million owed today as part of his three-year, $24 million contract.
? Receiver Donte Stallworth is owed a bonus of $4.75 million in his seven-year, $35 million contract.

Re: Joe J I guess it all comes down to who you believe. The Browns say that they offered Joe the NFL minimum but Joe says that it was not just the money so I guess no one will ever know. I think I would have let Stallworth go before Joe.It sounds like they tried to renegotiate with JoeJ, but couldn't come to a deal.
Cripes. Talk about a total rebuild (assuming that happens). Though, I guess you could get similar, if not better production, from draft picks that you got from Jamaal and "Doubtful/Gametime Decision" Stallworth.billmac91;1428194; said:I don't think we have any money left. PFT is going as far as saying Stallworth or Jamaal Lewis may be cut.
I assume our free agency signings are done. Focus is now on the draft.
Tucker signed for the minimum and he can play RT. They're also saying that Shaefer might comeback depending on what teams offer him in FA.Buckrock;1428181; said:Khalif Barnes at RT? We need a RG too.
I can see the Browns cutting Stallworth but unless they get a running back in FA I can't see them cutting Lewis.. PFT is going as far as saying Stallworth or Jamaal Lewis may be cut.
