Cleveland Browns (2009 Season)

I'm somewhat disappointed in the lack of signing quality starters on defense as well, but I'm glad they're actually trying to get some players to compete. They could be doing what the Bears are doing - absolutely nothing.

I'm starting to become a Browns fan. Sucks for me. :(

I haven't read beyond this post yet so forgive me if this had been addressed, but....

Why the fuck would you become a Browns fan if you didn't have to? I have no choice. I was raised this way. It's not too late for you. Save yourself!!!!!!!!!

 Not sure. When I first started watching the NFL I carried my love of Pittsburgh (mainly the Penguins) over to the Steelers, but over the last few years I've lost interest in them and gained more interest in the Browns. I can't explain it. Still waiting to feel that strong connection to an NFL team. Maybe that's why I lost interest in the Steelers.

Cleveland Browns sign Seattle Seahawks OL Floyd Womack
by Mary Kay Cabot / Plain Dealer Reporter
Friday March 13, 2009, 5:48 PM

BEREA -- The Browns today signed unrestricted free agent offensive lineman Floyd Womack, a source told the Plain Dealer.

Womack, an eight-year veteran of the Seattle Seahawks, is a versatile lineman who can play all line positions except center. Originally a fourth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2001, he's started 47 of the 90 games he played with the Seahawks.

Womack will most likely be slated for the right side of the line. The Browns released starting right tackle Kevin Shaffer on Thursday, but might re-sign him at a reduced salary. Terms of Womack's deal were undisclosed.

Maybe we might need Beanie after all

Cleveland Browns back Jason Wright in Arizona

Updated at 2:10 p.m.

CLEVELAND -- Free agent Browns running back Jason Wright is visiting the Arizona Cardinals today.

Wright's 23 carries last year (for 85 yards rushing) were his fewest in three years as the Browns gave more playing time to Jerome Harrison. Still, Wright was the best back in blitz pickups and a core player on special teams.

In an email response, Mike McCartney, Wright's agent, said that the Browns are interested in bringing Wright back.

It's simply amazing the difference a year makes when it comes to our (the fan's) feeling about the offense. Last year this time, most of us thought we were "loaded" and Chud was an offensive guru. This year, I'm hoping we can score enough points to remain competitive.

I don't like the fact that they gave up all their roster bonuses. I don't think Stallworth is worth the money especially after last year's performance. It now will be interesting to see what happens with Anderson now that he has been paid off.

The addition of Barton will certainly improve our ILB but Jackson really needs to get better. I think he is just too small to play that position in a 3-4.

Browns sign former Jets linebacker Eric Barton, former Seattle offensive lineman Floyd Womack
by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter
Friday March 13, 2009, 8:47 PM

Barton, an inside linebacker who started all 16 games for the Jets last season, is the fourth former Jet signed by Browns coach Eric Mangini. The others are linebacker David Bowens, defensive lineman C.J. Mosley and cornerback Hank Poteat. The Browns also have signed Jets safety Abram Elam to a one-year offer sheet, which New York has seven days to match.

Barton, an 11th-year pro, often was praised by Mangini for intelligence and ability to call the defensive signals. Primarily a first- and second-down player, Barton is known for his durability. In 2008, he made 127 tackles -- the second-highest in his career. It was the fifth time he's notched 100 or more in a season. He had 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble, one recovery and four passes defensed.

Barton, who will turn 32 in September, will challenge for a starting spot inside next to D'Qwell Jackson. Originally a fifth-round pick of the Raiders in 1999 out of Maryland, he spent five season in Oakland before signing with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in 2004. A career highlight was his 13 tackles in the Raiders' Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay in 2003.
Womack (6-4, 320), an eight-year veteran of the Seahawks, is a versatile lineman who can play all the positions except center. Last season, he started 14 games -- eight at right guard and six at left guard -- in one of his healthiest seasons.

After missing 12 games because of injuries in 2005 and 2006, Womack attributed his solid 2008 season to dropping 25 pounds and playing at 320 -- his lightest since junior high.

Originally a fourth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2001, he started 47 of his 90 games played. With the Browns, he'll most likely play on the right side and could start. He's best suited for guard, but has started games at right and left tackle.

One of his best seasons was in 2004, when he started eight games at right tackle. The Browns released starting right tackle Kevin Shaffer Thursday, but were trying to re-sign him at a reduced rate. In other Browns news, Big Bonus Friday came and went with no more heads rolling. The Browns paid bonuses to quarterback Derek Anderson ($5¤million), defensive end Corey Williams ($6¤million) and running back Jamal Lewis ($4¤million), according to sources. They're also believed to have paid the bonuses to defensive tackle Shaun Rogers ($6 million), left tackle Joe Thomas ($3.44¤million) and receiver Donte Stallworth ($4.75 million).
Rogers, disgruntled over perceived slights by coach Eric Mangini, had asked the Browns not to pay the bonus and to release him. The Browns made it clear they had no intention of doing so. Neither the Browns not Rogers' agent could be reached.

As for Anderson, the bonus increases his trade value, but it's not known if the Browns intend to trade him. Anderson has made it clear he wants to start, and could ask to be traded if it becomes apparent that Quinn is the starter.

Just WOW.

Donte Stallworth was in an accident last night in Miami, that killed a pedestrian. Immediate blood draw was done for substances in his system. Prosecutors are already getting involved.

Does not sound good at all. I hope he wasn't recklessley driving or under the influence. That would be a lot to live with.....

ProFootballTalk.com - Latest News and Rumors
That will be a lot to live with either way. It might even be worse for him if he was under the influence. What a shame.

I'd go for the happy medium...

I just heard about the Stallworth thing - what the hell?
