Steptoe made impact for Browns

September 3rd, 2008 ? No Comments

By SCOTT PETRAK
Staff Writer

Syndric Steptoe not only played himself onto the roster during the preseason, he?s in position to play a key role in the opener Sunday versus the Cowboys.
Steptoe will likely be the third receiver behind Braylon Edwards and Donte Stallworth. He will also return punts and kickoffs if Joshua Cribbs? high ankle sprain keeps him on the bench. Cribbs said Monday he?ll be a game-time decision.
That?s a lot of mileage covered by someone who entered camp a long shot to make the team. Steptoe was a seventh-round pick in 2007 and spent his rookie season on the practice squad.

Let's get it on: Browns don't hide their excitement as season opener approaches

by Tony Grossi Wednesday September 03, 2008, 6:38 PM

John Kuntz/The Plain DealerRomeo Crennel on starting preparations for Sunday's season opener against Dallas: "The team is excited about the start of the regular season. They've been waiting for it since the schedule came out last year. I know that our fans are excited about it as well."

Wednesday of Browns game week is a day of energy as preparation for the Sunday opponent intensifies.
Wednesday of a season opener cranks it up a notch. Like every team, the Browns are undefeated and unblemished.
Now add the great expectations of 2008 and the glitzy Dallas Cowboys as the first opponent. No matter how this season transpires, take note that the mood at the beginning was that of a playoff atmosphere.

Browns try to regroup before facing Cowboys Anderson working to get his timing back with Edwards
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Thursday, Sep 04, 2008
BEREA: The Browns are scrambling to put the pieces back together from an injury-riddled preseason before America's Team comes to town, but quarterback Derek Anderson relishes the work.
''I was in bed for a week,'' Anderson said. ''Not really bed, but they didn't let me do much. I didn't even have TV, so it actually worked out good. It took me a few weeks to get a TV in my house. My wife was a little upset.''
Apparently there are some upgrades in the works at the Anderson house since the new contract he signed Feb. 29 made him a multimillionaire. Now recovered from an Aug. 18 concussion that was the second of his football career, Anderson faces more pressing issues than where to hang the new flat screens.

Source: Linebacker Peek suffers knee injury

by Mary Kay Cabot Wednesday September 03, 2008, 10:44 PM

Joshua Gunter/The Plain DealerIn five NFL seasons, Browns linebacker Antwan Peek has 14 career sacks, and is being counted upon to provide pass-rush help for teammate Kamerion Wimbley. But sources said Wednesday night that Peek suffered a knee injury during the day's practice.
Browns linebacker Antwan Peek left Wednesday's practice with an apparent knee injury and did not return, a source told The Plain Dealer. The extent of the injury was not known. Peek had just returned to practice Monday after undergoing arthroscopic surgery July 31 to remove loose cartilage from his right knee. He was hoping to be available for Sunday's opener against the Cowboys.
Peek also underwent a scope in the off-season to repair a torn meniscus suffered in the opener against Pittsburgh last season. He had his choice to have surgery during the season or wait it out, and he chose the latter. He said he learned from that mistake and had the scope as soon as possible this time to be ready for the opener.
It was not yet known if Wednesday's incident was a re-injury or something unrelated. If Peek misses an extended period of time, the Browns would be thin at outside linebacker. Seventh-round pick Alex Hall, the surprise of training camp, would rotate with starter Willie McGinest on the left outside.

Browns have issues, but are trying to deal with them
Thursday, September 4, 2008

BEREA Everybody seems to think the rootin', tootin', shootin' Cowboys will ride their stampeding offense to the Super Bowl.

Dallas Head Coach Wade Phillips, though, says Cleveland "looks a lot like us."

Given the Browns' former 2,000-yard rusher (Jamal Lewis), two Pro Bowl receivers (Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow Jr.), Pro Bowl quarterback (Derek Anderson) and Pro Bowl left tackle (Joe Thomas), Phillips can even say so with a straight face.

Yet Browns play-caller Rob Chudzinski is working through some issues that could keep his unit from going stride for stride with the Cowboys.

Several players talked Wednesday about overcoming assorted obstacles.

THE RUNNER

Lewis has better credentials than some Hall of Famers.

He was a rookie when he rushed for 100-plus yards in a Super Bowl win. He delivered one of NFL history's great seasons in 2003. The 2007 Browns won five of their last seven games largely because of him.

Edwards ready to pick up where he left off last season
ASSOCIATED PRESS
BEREA, Ohio - For nearly five minutes, Braylon Edwards was his swaggering self. Bursting, as always, with confidence, Cleveland's wide receiver met with reporters yesterday for the first time since severely cutting his right foot during a postpractice mishap on Aug. 9, an injury that sidelined him for more than three weeks. Edwards assured everyone he'll be ready for Dallas on Sunday. Any limitations? "Next question," he snapped. Edwards talked more freely about his friendships with Cowboys wideout Terrell Owens and Olympic pool pal Michael Phelps as well as the lofty expectations being heaped upon the Browns. "I think we can be tremendous," he chirped. Only when he was walking away did Edwards show any vulnerability. As he headed toward the locker room door, Edwards was asked if he felt lucky that his injury wasn't worse. "Whew," he said. "Not even a question, it was so close to my Achilles."

Browns: Playoff hopes may ride on a retooled defense
New coordinator looks to improve unit that was among league's worst

Shaun Rogers, a tackle acquired in the offseason from Detroit, is one of the reasons the Browns enter the season with greater confidence in their defensive line.

CLEVELAND -- The numbers were not befitting of a 10-6 team. In 2007, the Cleveland Browns defense surrendered more yards than all but two other teams. Opponents averaged 4.5 yards per run against them.
A surprising offense and clutch special-teams play largely overcame Cleveland's defensive deficiencies. But the Browns understand that if they are to take the next step -- to the NFL playoffs -- their defense must pull its weight.
Weight might be the applicable word, because the Browns' attempt at fortifying their defense began by adding 670 pounds of beef to their line.
In trading for 350-pound tackle Shaun Rogers and 320-pound end Corey Williams, the Browns hope they do for the defensive line what the acquisitions of Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach last year did for their offensive line.
Results in the preseason were mixed, in part because injuries limited the time of several starters.

Source: Linebacker Peek suffers knee injury
Looks like he will be out for at least the opener and I would expect more from the way the article read. Old Willie is going to have to step up and help out along with Alex Hall which is really done a good situation for a seventh round pick. It just seems that if it's not one thing it's another with the Browns.

This Sunday should be a tough game to watch. Hopefully things don't get too out of hand. If our D can somehow get some decent pressure on Romo, we have an outside chance. This year's success depends on the Defense and their ability to be able to stop some of the better team's offenses.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said today that five-year veteran outside linebacker Antwan Peek blew out his right knee in practice Wednesday.

Crennel said, ''It looks like the patellar tendon,'' an injury that also befell center LeCharles Bentley and cornerback Gary Baxter while they were with the Browns. Both are out of football.

I see where they re-signed Shantee Orr but old Willie is going to have to play major minutes the entire season. Orr impressed me with his size and speed and I was surprised he was cut. Maybe he will be a big surprise in a backup role.
