Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

Patriots released Jason Webster, CB... one of their free agent pick-ups from this off-season due to a hamstring problem that has plagued him this pre-season.

The Bears also cut Ricky Manning, Jr.

Two solid cb's that would provide an instant upgrade to what we have.
I think you are probably on to something. The Browns are probably waiting to see what delete did defensive backs other teams let go and if any of them might be an upgrade we will jump on them... hopefully.

What to watch: A handful of players are on the bubble heading into the game, including receivers Travis Wilson, Lance Leggett, Efrem Hill and Paul Hubbard. Defensive backs A.J. Davis, Gerard Lawson, Brandon Mitchell and Travis Key are also fighting for roster spots. The six starters who sat out the Detroit game will also miss the Bears. Returner Josh Cribbs will be idle with his high ankle sprain and replaced on returns by Syndric Steptoe. Brady Quinn will try to rebound from a poor outing against Detroit and will play about a half. Rookie outside linebacker Alex Hall will most likely start for the second straight week in place of Willie McGinest and Jason Wright will sub for Jamal Lewis (hamstring).

Browns key injuries: QB Derek Anderson (concussion), WR Cribbs (ankle), WR Braylon Edwards (foot), RB Lewis (hamstring), S Brodney Pool (concussion), S Sean Jones (knee), McGinest (groin).
From article linked in a prior post "It's time to look Decent". It will be interesting to see which WRs and DBs are kept. I have to believe that Travis Wilson is a keeper because he was playing well in practice but has not shown up in the preseason games but nobody has stepped up.

I think they need to hold on to Steptoe at least going into the season.

Oh, I agree with that especially with Cribbs high ankle sprain. Steptoe is not listed in the article so I guess the coaches think he is a keeper. I don't know who else would run back kicks if Joshua's high ankle sprain lingered:(

Bring in those two guys AND Law - or as many of them as they can. The Browns need them.

Bears hand Browns another loss (16-10) and more injuries as opener vs. Dallas looms

by Tony Grossi Thursday August 28, 2008, 10:37 PM

Tracy Boulian/The Plain DealerJerome Harrison is tackled by Bears' Brandon McGowan just short of the goal line during the first quarter of Thursday's preseason finale at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Harrison eventually scored a couple of plays later.

Decent play is what coach Romeo Crennel wanted to see in the Browns' final exhibition game, and that's what he got. But he didn't get a win.
The Browns' No. 1 units -- missing seven starters -- were decent in building a 10-0 lead against the Chicago Bears through the first quarter. Their backups blew the advantage and lost the game, 16-10.
Thus, the Browns could not avoid only the second winless preseason in their history. They hope their 0-4 exhibition record is a distant memory when the Dallas Cowboys open the real season on Sept. 7.
"It really doesn't mean anything because it doesn't count," Crennel said of the Browns' four losses. "We could've been 4-0 and if we lose to Dallas you're going to ask what went wrong."

Browns Insider: Hadnot, Steptoe, Dinkins among latest additions to walking wounded

by Mary Kay Cabot Thursday August 28, 2008, 10:56 PM

Tracy Boulian/The Plain DealerBrowns rookie receiver Paul Hubbard lets a potential touchdown catch slip away late in the fourth quarter of Thursday's game against Chicago. Chicago's Trey Brown (32) is beaten on the play.

The Browns hoped to emerge from the preseason finale unscathed, but lost guard Rex Hadnot, receiver Syndric Steptoe and tight end Darnell Dinkins to injuries during the game.
Hadnot suffered a knee injury with a little more than four minutes left in the first quarter when he got tangled up with former Browns lineman Israel Idonije on a running play; Steptoe suffered a shoulder injury on the opening kickoff when he was drilled by Bears tight end Kellen Davis and Dinkins suffered a left hip injury with about six minutes left in the third quarter and was carted into the locker room.
None of them returned, but afterwards, Steptoe left the stadium without a wrap on the shoulder and Dinkins said he had a bruised hip and would be fine.

Second start a success for Quinn; ready or not, it's time for the real games

by Terry Pluto Thursday August 28, 2008, 10:14 PM

Scribbles in my notebook as the Browns end the preseason...
A second start in a week is exactly what Brady Quinn needed, as the quarterback seemed far more at ease completing 7 of 9 passes and putting 10 points on the scoreboard. The play calling was smart, having Quinn deliver some quick, short passes. That allowed him to get a sense of rhythm and confidence, and helped the offensive line keep the pressure off.
In his two starts, Quinn has no sacks, no interceptions. He seems poised and keeps the team organized. Unlike the 26-6 loss at Detroit on Saturday when he was hit hard five times, he barely was touched in his one quarter on the field. He brought Travis Wilson back from his funk, where the 2005 third-rounder didn't have a catch in his first two preseason starts against the Giants and Lions.

Rob Oller commentary: No wins, and lots of questions for Browns

Friday, August 29, 2008 3:11 AM
By Rob Oller

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The NFL is bad for business, if that business involves handicapping a team's fate entering the regular season.
Take the Cleveland Browns, for instance. A year ago, it appeared they were tracking toward disaster like an overcaffeinated circus knife thrower. Someone was going to get hurt, most likely coach Romeo Crennel, a supersized man on thin ice whose job security was in the hands of untested quarterback Charlie Frye.
Media pundits, including this one, warned that it would play out like a ship sailing over a waterfall, especially after Cleveland traded Frye to Seattle for a draft pick just one game into the regular season.
No doubt the desperate Browns were a dysfunctional lost cause.

I will admit that I am a little concerned now but I think if they get all of their injured players back by the Dallas game which I think they will I will become concerned if Dallas blows them out. Losing to them will not bother me as much is if they really get hammered.

With all the injuries and the state of the secondary, I think you better prepare yourself for that. Also, look no further back than last season to realize that a blowout loss in week 1 does not mean the season is over.

Edwards says foot is 'fine,' eager to rejoin offense

by Mary Kay Cabot Friday August 29, 2008, 7:29 PM

Joshua Gunter/The Plain DealerBraylon Edwards (left) and Kellen Winslow share a laugh during Thursday's preseason finale against Chicago. On Friday, Edwards said he was healed from his cut right ankle and would return to the practice field on Monday.

Braylon Edwards assured Browns fans Friday that he'll be back at practice on Monday, preparing for the Cowboys and building on his sensational Pro Bowl season of 2007.
He also implied during an interview on the Jim Rome Show that he's had the stitches removed from his lacerated right heel.
"It used to be a bad foot, hint, hint," said Edwards. "It's fine."

Cleveland Browns receiver Travis Wilson among their roster cuts

by Tony Grossi Saturday August 30, 2008, 10:59 AM

Receiver Travis Wilson and linebacker Shantee Orr were among the roster casualties as the Browns cut down to the 53-player limit on Saturday.
Also missing the cut were receiver Steve Sanders and linebacker David McMillan.
In a surprise move, the Browns ended the season of guard Lennie Friedman by putting him on the reserved/injured list.
The Browns elected to keep active injured draft picks Beau Bell and Martin Rucker. All the other 2008 draft picks also made the final roster.
A rundown of the transactions follows.

Browns Insider: Injuries prompt roster uncertainty for opener against Cowboys

by Mary Kay Cabot Saturday August 30, 2008, 5:05 PM

John Kuntz/The Plain DealerBrodney Pool is still questionable for the opener against Dallas with a concussion suffered during the preseason.

Starting right guard Rex Hadnot (knee) will most likely sit out the opener against Dallas, while returner Josh Cribbs (ankle) and starting free safety Brodney Pool (concussion) are questionable.
The official injury report won't be out until Wednesday, but Browns General Manager Phil Savage provided some insight during a Saturday press conference.
He said Hadnot, who suffered a knee injury during the Bears game, is "probably going to be down for at least a short time." He said Cribbs is "up in the air to a degree" with his high ankle sprain and "we'll just have to wait and see." As for Pool, he said, "I think there's a chance, maybe, I don't know. We'll know more as the week develops."

Terry's Talkin' ... about the Browns' preseason, Coach Sam, Cavs front line and Tribe's Choo

by Terry Pluto Saturday August 30, 2008, 8:12 PM

About the Browns...

When the Browns open the season against Dallas next Sunday, the starting offensive line will be Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach, Hank Fraley, Seth McKinney and Kevin Shaffer. The only healthy backups are Nate Bennett and Isaac Sowells. Am I the only one uneasy about this? It will be at least a few more weeks before Ryan Tucker (hip surgery) and Rex Hadnot (sprained knee) are ready to return. McKinney is a solid pro, but he has ended the last three years on the injured list. Lennie Friedman (shoulder) is out indefinitely.

Once the strength of the team, the offensive line now has little depth. Dallas comes to town having ranked third in the NFL with 46 QB sacks last season. Linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Greg Ellis combined for 26 sacks (compared to 28 for the entire Browns team), and that means the line will really be tested. It's also one injury away from the inexperienced Bennett or Sowells playing.
