Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

Man in the middle

Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
08.25.2008

Among the seven starters who didn't play for the Browns Saturday in Detroit were some of the team's most important - and most indispensable - players.
One who did play showed he very much belongs in that group as well.
Shaun Rogers was an absolute bully at the nose tackle position, contributing an unofficial total of 5 tackles and spending much of the first half drawing double-team blocks from his former teammates.
In many cases, even those double teams weren't enough to keep Rogers out of the backfield.
It was a glimpse of what Rogers can be for the Browns, who traded Leigh Bodden and a third-round pick to get him and make him a huge - literally and figuratively - part of fixing their run defense.

Dawson answering leg questions

Steve King, Staff Writer
08.25.2008

When it comes to long field goals, people are always trying to shortchange Phil Dawson.
First things first. Ever since Dawson made his NFL debut with the expansion Browns in 1999, he has battled the unfair rap by some that he lacks leg strength.
"I don't know where, or how, that got started," said Dawson after Saturday's 26-6 preseason loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. "I had 13 field goals over 50 yards in college. I had never faced that criticism until I got to the pros."
He has proven that opinion dead-wrong by all credible accounts, as he has made good on 7-of-9 attempts, a healthy 77.8-percent success rate, from 50 yards and longer in his career.

Juggernaut Index No. 6: It's not like Sipe-to-Newsome, but it's still quite good

The Juggernaut Index is our annual attempt to rank every NFL team for fantasy purposes. We're not concerned with real-life wins and losses here, only fantasy potential. These rankings rely entirely on hard, incontrovertible math. They are not to be questioned.

6. Cleveland Browns
We should probably begin by mentioning that all the interesting Browns are injured. Except Phil Dawson, who's obviously feeling great. He accounted for all six Cleveland points in Saturday's preseason loss.

Derek Anderson is concussed, Braylon Edwards has a cut on his foot, and Jamal Lewis has a pulled hamstring. Kellen Winslow and Donte Stallworth have each dealt with hamstring issues, too. Pro Bowl kick returner Joshua Cribbs has a high ankle sprain.

So it has not been an ideal preseason for Cleveland. And they're 0-3.

wknr 850 is apparently reporting Ty Law has checked into a downtown Cleveland hotel...just throwing that out there.

He's definitely not the stud he once was, but he could be a great teacher for the your corners the Brownies have. We shall see.

I hope this goes down. Yeah, he's not a pro-bowler anymore, but he's a step above anybody else except maybe Wright. This could allow McDonald to slide back to the nickelback role I think he's better suited for.

This makes sense. A willy veteran reporting to a team with a system he knows, camp over, 1 week to get ready. I wonder what his financial demands are.

Agree 100%. I know it's still very early but from what I have seen our secondary CB's especially need an upgrade and Law could help out a lot. Wright will be ok but I'm not sold on McDonald.
GO BROWNIES! WOOF, WOOF, WOOF!

same here...I think this would be a solid pick up. I don't know why they waited so long to bring this guy in, just even to talk! I know there were some rumblings about Law wanting big money, but the guy was a performer last year. He should know the system from his time with Crennel in NE too. Agree about what they should do with McDonald as well. Kid has nickel written all over him. He's fast, has good hands, makes good reads for someone being so young and thrust into a starting job last year. I think the transition will be a lot better for him too. He won't be on the field every down nor will he be expected to shut down a #1 or #2 receiver.

Browns' safety shines in media's spotlight Backup Mike Adams enjoys showing skills while Jones recovers
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Thursday, Aug 28, 2008
BEREA: Browns safety Mike Adams found himself right where he wanted to be, in the middle of a media huddle at the end of the practice field.
So the ever-smiling Adams slung his arm around the shoulder of an unsuspecting writer Tuesday and said, ''This feels good, everybody surrounding me. Get closer. I feel important.''
Adams could become more important if starting strong safety Sean Jones' swollen knee doesn't improve before the Browns' regular-season opener Sept. 7 against the Dallas Cowboys. Coach Romeo Crennel expects Jones back at practice next week, but the Browns seem concerned about his condition.
Going into tonight's preseason finale against the Chicago Bears (0-3) at Cleveland Browns Stadium, Adams already has carved out a larger role than some expected. It's not only because he and Nick Sorensen will sub for the injured Jones and free safety Brodney Pool, who is being held out following his third concussion in four years.

Crennel to Browns: It's time to look 'decent'

by Mary Kay Cabot Wednesday August 27, 2008, 6:18 PM

Mark Duncan/Associated PressBrowns head coach Romeo Crennel on the importance of Thursday's exhibition finale against Chicago: "If you have a team that needs to develop a winning attitude, then it's really important that you win. I'd say we're a young team. We're also young as far as winning goes because we haven't done a whole lot of it around here."
Coach Romeo Crennel gathered the players together after practice Tuesday and told them the starters would play as long it took to look good against the Bears Thursday night in the preseason finale at the stadium. None of this one-series-and-out if they look as bad as they have the last two games.
"I'd like to win the game for one," said Crennel. "The other thing is, I'd like for us to look decent. It seems that the consensus is that we were decent in the Jets game, even though we lost that one. I'd like to look decent against the Bears and go from there."
The 0-3 Browns will also try to avoid their first winless preseason since 1972, when they went 0-6. But it proved meaningless that year, with the Browns finishing 10-4 and losing to Miami in the playoffs.
"If you have a team that needs to develop a winning attitude, then it's really important that you win," said Crennel. "It varies by team, and we're somewhere in the middle. We've got young quarterbacks, corners, so I'd say we're a young team. We're also young as far as winning goes because we haven't done a whole lot of it around here."

Browns' jobs will be on the line tonight against Bears
Thursday, August 28, 2008
BY STEVE DOERSCHUK
[email protected]

CLEVELAND What's more exciting than a November fourth quarter that ends with a double-bank-shot field goal?

What's more inane than an NFL fourth quarter in August?

By the fourth quarter of tonight's Browns-Bears telecast, the stands will be emptier than a campaign promise.

There will be some Brady Quinn drama, but he probably won't play more than a half. There's the question of whether Cleveland can avoid its second winless preseason since the franchise joined the NFL in 1950.

On balance, tonight's game is to the opener against Dallas what sky-gazing is to sky-diving.

Yet, it's the game of the century for certain players who may never get a better shot at making an NFL team.

Final cut day is Saturday. Rosters must be trimmed from 75 to 53.

Perry High School alumnus Kirk Barton figures to get an extended shift on the Bears' offensive line.

Browns' McGinest still strong as NFL's most senior LB

By Jarrett Bell, USA TODAY
BEREA, Ohio ? It is not so typical to encounter a veteran NFL player who opts to practice in training camp rather than accept his coach's offer to take a day off.
That makes Willie McGinest pretty unique.
As much as the 15th-year Cleveland Browns linebacker appreciates the bouquets that coach Romeo Crennel occasionally throws at proven vets in the interest of resting weary bones, McGinest is not always willing to accept such gestures.
It kind of messes with his program.
"There have been times when I wanted him to sit out but he decided he was going to go," Crennel says. "He wants to get his timing down and all that. When that happens, I just try to manage the number of reps that he gets."

Reda quietly performing well

Steve King, Staff Writer
08.27.2008

Enough's enough.
The gig was finally up the other day for Browns kicker Jason Reda.
He had flown under the radar, so to speak, during the OTAs, the full-squad minicamp, training camp and the first three preseason games. He quietly did his job each and every day. Not once during all those days did a media member -- at least one from the Cleveland -- stop him to do an interview.

Patriots released Jason Webster, CB... one of their free agent pick-ups from this off-season due to a hamstring problem that has plagued him this pre-season.

The Bears also cut Ricky Manning, Jr.

Two solid cb's that would provide an instant upgrade to what we have.
