Quinn working with Stallworth Backup quarterback likely to start Thursday in preseason finale
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Tuesday, Aug 26, 2008
BEREA: Brady Quinn joked that he was throwing to Braylon Edwards in Edwards' backyard and handing off to Jamal Lewis in the hallway.
Those two remain injured. But the Browns backup quarterback did spend time after practice Monday with receiver Donte' Stallworth, especially after they failed to hook up twice in the first quarter of Saturday's 26-6 preseason loss at Detroit.
They missed each other on four throws, including a bomb on the first play, negated by a defensive holding penalty on safety Dwight Smith. So Quinn and free agent signee Stallworth worked together for at least 15 minutes after their teammates went in.
''Yeah, especially when we're installing different stuff each week,'' Quinn said. ''You always want to work on some new routes. Coming into a short week, it can be tough at times to get down some of that stuff and get on the same page with guys running routes they haven't run before.''
On the heels of his first professional (if unofficial) NFL start, Quinn seems likely to get another in Thursday's preseason finale at home against Chicago. Starter Derek Anderson, who suffered a concussion Aug. 18 against the New York Giants, did not practice again Monday.

Heat is on Browns, and coaches are putting it there
Tuesday, August 26, 2008
BY STEVE DOERSCHUK
[email protected]

BEREA Derek Anderson was out. Braylon Edwards and Jamal Lewis were out.

Ditto with starting safeties Sean Jones and Brodney Pool. X-man Joshua Cribbs, too. All of them in the same boat at Monday's practice: out.

With the Sept. 7 opener against Dallas getting all the closer, the heat was very much on.

"C'MONNNN!!!!" receivers coach Wes Chandler moaned the split second Steve Sanders dropped a pass in individual drills.

Sanders, whose near future could call for being the No. 3 receiver or getting cut Saturday, skipped the ball back toward the quarterbacks in disgust. In almost the same motion, he was on the ground giving Chandler 10 push-ups.

Moments later, Kellen Winslow Jr. had to reach down for a Brady Quinn pass. Coordinator Rob Chudzinski muttered to the quarterback, "Get it up. Get it up."

It's a balancing act for coaches now that the preseason record is 0-3, and injury questions are everywhere. Tear 'em down. Build 'em back up.

"That-a-way to work, Steve!" Chandler yelled after Sanders came back with a routine catch.

Browns LB Peek is closer to return
Tuesday, August 26, 2008
By STEVE DOERSCHUK
[email protected]

BEREA In a preseason that has looked so sick amid injury woes, Antwan Peek's recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery is going well.

The 28-year-old outside linebacker has missed nearly a month of practice, but he was back on the field Monday. He did not participate in team drills, but that's coming fairly soon.

"I'm doing a lot better," Peek said as he hurried toward the trainer's room seeming to be in high spirits. "I've just gotta keep getting treatment. I'll be ready, I think."

Ready to face Dallas on Sept. 7?

"I'll be ready to go," Peek said.

Peek is a valuable pass rusher who is the No. 3 man in the outside linebacker rotation behind Kamerion Wimbley and Willie McGinest.

Peek brings 65 games of NFL experience, including 27 starts to the table. He seems a far more desirable option than rookie Alex Hall, who started Saturday at Detroit.

McGinest skipped the game with a groin injury, but was in uniform Monday and should be ready for Dallas.

Anderson has quick return to practice

Associated Press

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

BEREA ? Browns starting quarterback Derek Anderson made an appearance on the practice field Tuesday, Aug, 26, his first since suffering a concussion Aug. 18 in a preseason game versus the New York Giants.
He did some throwing at the beginning of practice while wearing his helmet, but he left the field once team drills began.
Brady Quinn again took snaps with the first-team offense and is expected to start Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Chicago Bears.

Receivers battle for roster spot Jurevicius out for six weeks. Bears game might be last chance for Steptoe, Wilson, Sanders
By Marla Ridenour
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Wednesday, Aug 27, 2008
BEREA: The Browns' search for a third receiver might go down to Thursday's final preseason game and perhaps even the waiver wire.
The Browns' offseason plan, which lasted until late June, was officially scuttled Tuesday when they placed 10-year veteran Joe Jurevicius on the physically unable to perform list and Kevin Kasper on injured reserve.
Jurevicius, 33, a Cleveland native, was slated for the No. 3 spot behind Braylon Edwards and Donte' Stallworth. Jurevicius must miss at least the first five games of the regular season. He's undergone four surgeries on his right knee since January, three to clean out a staph infection, the last on June 30.
Kasper, a former walk-on at Iowa who has played for five NFL teams and been with nine since 2001, suffered a concussion and neck injury Saturday against the Detroit Lions. The journeyman drew raves with his slashing style going over the middle during offseason training activities and minicamp. But he suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for nearly all of training camp.

Browns Insider: Jurevicius given more time to rehab; receivers dueling for roster spots

by Mary Kay Cabot Tuesday August 26, 2008, 8:45 PM

Chuck Crow/The Plain DealerJoe Jurevicius won't be making any first-down grabs for the Browns until at least the seventh week of the season, after the Browns placed the receiver on the reserve/physically unable to perform list on Tuesday.
Receiver Joe Jurevicius (knee) was placed Tuesday on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, meaning he'll miss at least the first six weeks of the season, including the bye week Oct. 5. The earliest Jurevicius could play would be Week 7, Oct. 19 at Washington. During that time, he'll be able to rehab in Berea and attend meetings, but won't be allowed to practice with the team. After the sixth week, the Browns have a three-week window to allow Jurevicius to practice. Once he does that, they'll have another three weeks to decide on his roster status.
At any point from Week 6 through the end of the practice window, they can add Jurevicius to the 53-man roster, place him on injured reserve for the season or keep him on PUP.

Injury-plagued Browns must keep preparing QB Brady Quinn in finale of a perplexing preseason

by Terry Pluto Tuesday August 26, 2008, 6:38 PM

Scribbles in my Browns notebook as they get ready for the final preseason game...

Play Brady Quinn at least all of the first half when the Browns face Chicago on Thursday. You can argue several different points about Quinn's performance in the 26-6 loss to Detroit on Saturday, but everyone should agree the kid from Notre Dame needs to get as much experience as possible as fast as possible. He spent last season watching and practicing, and that helps. But he needs to play in games against starters where he actually can be tackled. In practice, the defense is not allowed to touch the QB to protect him from injury, and that can create a false sense of security for the quarterback.
Mark Duncan/Associated PressPreseason games are far more valuable to the growth of quarterback Brady Quinn than practices, says columnist Terry Pluto.
I'm not being an alarmist, but Derek Anderson did suffer a concussion in college. And he had one last week against the Giants. This is not to say he'll have another one, but the Browns must have Quinn prepared in case of an injury to their starting QB. Only 12 QBs started every game last season, and 62 different QBs made starts. Odds are Quinn will get a chance, and the more experience he has with the starters in preseason and practice, the better.

Browns linebacker Andra Davis remains optimistic about season
Wednesday, August 27, 2008
BY STEVE DOERSCHUK
[email protected]

BEREA The Browns' 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 drafts came and went.

As the Cowboys game creeps closer, Ryan Pontbriand (2003) and Andra Davis (2002) are the last men standing.

That's right. A long snapper and a linebacker drafted in fifth rounds are all the 2008 Browns have to show for five years of drafting.

For his part, Davis sees some humor in this. Imagine. He's a decade younger than Brett Favre. He didn't arrive in Cleveland until two years after CC Sabathia made his first start for the Indians.

He's a young father of daughters 7, 4 and 1. Yet, he's the grand old man of the Browns' defense.

Davis is way too much of an optimist to turn grim reaper on what he hopes becomes the best of his years in an orange helmet.

An 0-3 preseason in which the team has resembled the latter days of Butch Davis will not bring him down.

It's 19 and counting as Tribe's Cliff Lee stops Tigers
Wednesday, August 27, 2008
BY JOSH WEIR
[email protected]

DETROIT Cliff Lee is building a case for the American League Cy Young.

He also should be building an actual, physical trophy case for the award.

With more than a month left in the season, Lee's competition for baseball's top pitching prize is shrinking in his rearview mirror as he keeps his focus squarely on the road before him.

The Indians' All-Star lefty dazzled another opponent Tuesday night, leading the Tribe to a 10-4 win vs. the Tigers at Comerica Park.

Lee improved to19-2, setting a career high for single-season wins while the Indians won their ninth straight game and moved ahead of Detroit by a half-game for the coveted third-place spot in the Central Division.

His team, winner of 15 of its last 18 games, has finally caught fire in this disappointing 2008 season. Lee's season, which started 6-0, has never lost its flame.

"Like I've said every other time, I'm going to continue to go out there and try to take it one day at a time, one outing at a time," Lee said. "I just want to get us as deep into the game as I can and give the team a chance to win, try to put up as many zeroes as I can."

The standard Lee answer followed a standard Lee outing. He went 7 2/3 innings, walking one, striking out four and allowing two runs.

"When you talk about what he's doing, the consistency is as impressive as anything," Manager Eric Wedge said. "With his mindset. With his routine. With his rhythm. And his focus. Just another good game for Cliff."

I would really like for them to sign Law also. I know that his best years are behind him but I still think he has the knowledge to help out in our defensive backfield. Plus, he would be able to help our young CB's with just his presence.

The Browns are really hurting at WR with Kasper out until at least after the bye week. Hard to believe that Wilson is still in danger of not making the roster per Romeo. I was also surprised that they cut Austin Scott. I thought it was a pretty good RB during his days at Penn State but he didn't see any action in the exhibition season so I guess they're happy with Harrison and Wright.

Did not know Anderson suffered a concussion while he was in college. Hopefully, this will be his last one.

A look back at high school -- from the NFL

Wednesday, August 27, 2008 The Oregonian

A LOOK BACK
AT HIGH SCHOOL --
FROM THE NFL Derek Anderson
The day before practice my freshman year, I had pretty much decided I wasn't going to play, but my coaches asked me to come and play quarterback. I had never played quarterback before. I played on the freshman team, and swung to varsity playing wide receiver and ended up playing wide receiver in the playoffs.
We always talked about practicing on Thanksgiving. It was what you dreamed of when you were younger, and every year I was there we had practice Thanksgiving morning. It was great! Always cold and wet.
The things I remember most are the teammates, my friends. The families in Scappoose have always been so supportive, and to this day are the same. All the coaches I played for there always cared about all of us as people first, and they continue to help develop our youth into great people!

Sorensen doesn't mind the label

Steve King, Staff Writer
08.25.2008

With Nick Sorensen, what you see is not all you get.
First and foremost, the 30-year-old Virginia Tech product is known almost exclusively as a good special teams player. That's been his NFL calling card.
He's also known as someone who, despite playing safety as well and being in his eighth season, is still without an official interception in the NFL.
All that changed Saturday in the 26-6 preseason loss to the Detroit Lions -- well, sort of, anyway.
Oh, sure, Sorensen still performed well on special teams. You can always count on him for that. After all, he tied for fifth on the Browns in special teams tackles last year despite the fact he wasn't signed until after the sixth game.
