The Dallas debacle: Wobbly Browns overwhelmed in opener by Cowboys

John Kuntz/The Plain DealerCowboys 28, Browns 10
The Browns did the impossible on Sunday, making a strong case that the NFL preseason needs to be longer, not shorter. They wanted to believe an abysmal preseason was an aberration and that the sight of the Dallas Cowboys would bring out the real Browns. But they played the same way in the opener as they did in the winless exhibition season -- shorthanded, disjointed and anything but sharp.
The result was another colossal egg laid in a season opener at home. They genuflected to the Cowboys, 28-10, extending their trend of starting a season on a rotten note. That's nine losses in 10 opening days -- all at home.
"We have to get better," said linebacker Willie McGinest. "We got our butts beat today. That was a good lesson."
Injuries were the reason the Browns all but admitted they tanked the preseason. Most disrupted their high-powered offense, and a surprise scratch of receiver Donte Stallworth in pre-game warmups added to the discontinuity.
"We played like we hadn't played together in two or three weeks," said running back Jamal Lewis, stating a fact.
But the defense -- the relatively intact unit -- sent out S.O.S. signals with a horrendous first outing.

Browns lose, but tailgaters dream, drink, eat big
by Laura Johnston Monday September 08, 2008, 5:41 AM
Scott Shaw/The Plain Dealer08cBcolorD.jpg -- Cleveland Browns football tailgaters celebrate before the game against the Dallas Cowboys in the Municipal Lot on Sept. 7, 2008.
Minivan or made-over school bus, sedan or splashy themed RV, they meet at the municipal lot on South Marginal Road. Every year, they come. Every home game. As early as 4 a.m., loaded with beer and burgers and lawn chairs, driven by fans who believe.
"There's always this year."
The refrain -- proclaimed now in brown and orange on an Inner Belt billboard -- is classic Browns, as standard as dog bones and Bernie Kosar jerseys.
"We're Cleveland fans. It's always next year," said Raymond Schaefer, 31, one of two dozen Sandusky fans on his dad's Mobile Dawg Pound bus. "Hopefully, this is next year."
Tony Schaefer bought the bus in 1996 and spent three Browns-less years fixing it up, even installing a dog hood ornament that sprays water at passersby. When the team returned in 1999, he debuted it at the muni lot.
It hasn't missed a home game since.

Browns' great expectations meet reality in opening loss to Cowboys

CLEVELAND A field-level banner laughed at that old circus Cowboy, Terrell Owens.
"T.O. has B.O. ... still."
The Browns still stink in openers, losing this one, 28-10.
Owens drew his obligatory 15-yard penalty for a touchdown skit.
"You can't have fun ... is that what it is?" he said.
What about the Dawg Pound's fun?
Even the die-hards left early. At the two-minute warning, the outgoing foot traffic on the Third Street Bridge resembled the evacuation of New Orleans.
These storms can pass quickly ? the Browns went 10-5 after their 2007 opener ? but this one left an immediate mark.
"We know the fans are disappointed," linebacker D'Qwell Jackson said. "We're more disappointed."
The Browns should beg Roger Goodell for a 2009 opener in Anchorage. They are 1-9 in expansion-era kickoffs ? all in Cleveland!
"It was very frustrating," said captain Andra Davis, who is 1-6.
The Browns aimed to erase the memory of last year's caustic kickoff against Pittsburgh, a 34-7 loss. Here's how close they were to the bull's-eye:
? At halftime, they trailed 21-7 in points and 239-110 in yards.
? At that point, Tony Romo was 13-for-16; Derek Anderson was 8-for-16.

Todd Porter: Another opener and yet another Browns stinker

CLEVELAND
No, football season never starts in August. Summer doesn't end at Labor Day. You can no longer wear white, starting today.
Football fall never starts until the rite of passage at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Summer nights don't end and crisp fall bonfires don't begin until the Browns play a stinker to start the NFL season.
If you're looking for a rite of passage that resembles a season opener on the lakefront, you can stop at circumcision.
There are the certainties: Death, taxes, gas prices will rise and the Browns will lose their season opener. It happened again Sunday evening the same way it's happened nine of the last 10 football falls here.
So when Andra Davis missed a tackle on a short pass that would've forced a punt and then dropped an interception that led to a Dallas touchdown and a 21-7 lead before halftime, you knew it was Groundhog Day, right? You didn't really expect to wash down those halftime 'dogs with a cold one and things would look better later on, right?
There's no such thing as beer goggles on a Cleveland season opener.
"The fact of the matter is we're 1-9 in opening games since the Browns have been back. We lose the opener. It sucks, but it's the way it goes," said Braylon Edwards ? as honest as his hands were slippery Sunday. Edwards, among many others, did his part by dropping at least two passes during a 28-10 loss.
Oh, but hope springs eternal even on the day after.

Flashy Cowboys serve Browns a hearty dose of humility

Cowboys running back Marion Barber hurdles over Browns defenders Mike Adams, left, and Leon Williams. Trailing is Eric Wright.
CLEVELAND - By 1 p.m. yesterday, local radio blowhards were making heady predictions over the Cleveland airwaves. "Browns" and "Super Bowl" were being used in the same sentence.
By the time most of the 73,012 faithful had filed into Cleveland Browns Stadium for the start of a late-afternoon season opener against the Dallas Cowboys, such optimism had been tempered.
The sight of the Cowboys, stars of screen (HBO's Hard Knocks) and gridiron (13-3 in the brutal NFC East last season), gave pause. The imposing Cowboys are known as "America's Team." They might be "America's Best Team."
The arm of Tony Romo, the legs of Marion Barber and the overwhelming talent of the rest of the Cowboys proved to be too much, too soon for the Browns, who were dismantled 28-10.

Browns coach Romeo Crennel throws his headset in disgust during the final moments of the game.
CLEVELAND -- With the 28-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys yesterday, the Browns have now lost nine of 10 home openers since they re-entered the NFL.
Their inability to win the first game in front of their fans is simply part of playing in Cleveland, according to receiver Braylon Edwards.
"We lose the opener, but that's the way it is," said Edwards, who had two catches for 14 yards. "The last time I checked, we have 15 more games."

If the guys responsible for this can't even put the batteries in the helmets right when are we supposed to expect from the rest of the team. This is pretty damn embarrassing.Quarterback Derek Anderson said battery failures in his helmet headset were a factor in the Browns' inability to get several plays off in a timely and orderly manner.
I will just expect the worst than be surprised if he will be able to play against Pittspuke this week.Cleveland Browns receiver Stallworth to have MRI for quad strain
by Mary Kay Cabot

Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth suffered what has now been diagnosed as a quad strain and will undergo an MRI today.
Coach Romeo Crennel, speaking at his noon press conference, said the Browns won't know Stallworth's availability for Pittsburgh until he undergoes further evaluation. Crennel said the Browns will also wait to see how Stallworth is before deciding whether or not to bring in another veteran receiver.
Crennel said Stallworth felt something during warmups before Sunday opener at Cleveland Browns Stadium against Dallas. It was first thought to be a pulled groin muscle. He did not play in the game.
