Cleveland Browns (2008 Season)

Well the injuries sure do seem to be running rampant again. :(

I've been keeping my expectations in check since the schedule came out. The secondary wasn't improved going into week 1, that's for sure. I was really holding out hope Ty Law would be brought in, but oh well. It could be ugly Sunday, but if the DL can get adequate pressure on Romo and get him rattled, the Browns have a chance.

If it is indeed a blowout, just remember how last season started...

That's a pretty big blow that Peek is out for the year, hopefully Willie can step up
Based on what we saw last season, I'm not expecting much.

Well, at least Willie knows what to do mentally. Hopefully, you can physically do what his mind is telling him to. I would think he would only play on passing downs with Orr playing more in running situations.
He knows what to do mentally, he has a future as a defensive coach. Unfortunately, physically, he has the speed of a Yugo.

Browns Insider: Secondary knows it's the primary concern against talented Cowboys
by Tony Grossi
Thursday September 04, 2008, 8:11 PM
Browns cornerbacks have been the subject of much scrutiny in the preseason. But in Sunday's season-opener against Dallas, the safeties could be more under the gun.

The Cowboys present just about the ultimate challenge to the safeties because of their formidable troika of bruising runner Marion Barber, athletic tight end Jason Witten and towering receiver Terrell Owens.

It's a pick-your-poison dilemma for new coordinator Mel Tucker. Does he use a safety to help support the run or help in coverage of Owens? Either way, Witten can be a force without a safety roaming the middle.

Both Browns starting safeties, Sean Jones (knee) and Brodney Pool (concussion), have been limited in the practice week after missing the last two preseason games with injuries. Pool did not practice on Thursday. Mike Adams is his replacement.

Jones said his knee feels fine and he is inspired by skeptics of the secondary.

Injury report: Linebacker Antwan Peek (knee) was put on injured reserve and Pool did not practice. Jones was upgraded and participated fully in practice. Quarterback Derek Anderson, tight end Darnell Dinkins, receiver Braylon Edwards, tight end Steve Heiden, linebacker Willie McGinest, receiver Syndric Steptoe and linebacker Leon Williams were removed from the injury report.

Bell getting ready: Rookie linebacker Beau Bell said he has not discounted being able to play on Sunday. Bell missed the bulk of preseason after having arthroscopic knee surgery.

"I'm doing the best I can to get out there," he said. "Mentally-wise, I feel I didn't miss that much because I was still studying even though I wasn't practicing. But running around and keeping in shape, I missed a lot."
Bell's immediate contributions were supposed to come on special teams. He said he's been used "wherever they need me" on teams.

Rush job for Hall: Rookie Browns linebacker asked to help fill void of injured Peek
by Tony Grossi
Thursday September 04, 2008, 7:21 PM
Most rookies are eased into the deep waters of the NFL. Some simply dive in.

Alex Hall?

"I did a cannonball," the Browns' newest pass rush hope said Thursday.

The angular linebacker from Division II Saint Augustine's College has gone from seventh-round draft choice to all-Berea in preseason to hopeful savior for the Browns' beleaguered pass rush.

Hall will not only play in his NFL debut against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, he will be counted on as a result of a season-ending knee injury to Antwan Peek.

Peek, who was on schedule to return for the opener from July 31 knee surgery, tore the patella tendon in his right knee at Wednesday's practice and had major surgery Thursday morning, coach Romeo Crennel said.

To fill Peek's roster spot, the Browns called back veteran linebacker Shantee Orr, who didn't make the final roster cut last Saturday.

Depending upon the outcome of the game Sunday against Dallas, I would not be surprised to see the Browns pick up a veteran DB. The reason that I say this is because after the first regular season is played a team can sign a player without any specific guarantees. A player who is signed before the first regular-season game is under contract for the entire season. After the first game, the Browns can sign a veteran player and if they cut him during the season it will not be a total hit on the salary cap.

That didn't work out all that well for us when we did that shit with our punters. Hopefully, if that's the plan, it doesn't come back to bite us too hard.

There is a lot of chatter about Ty Law. It does not look like Pool will play this Sunday because he did not practice yesterday or today. I know that he plays a different position but we need to get a little depth back there.

I read that you'll see all sorts of movement AFTER Dallas game... if they sign someone before the game, they have to pay him for the whole year... if you sign them AFTER game one... rules change

Cleveland Browns face tough test on opening day against the Dallas Cowboys

Sunday, September 07, 2008 Mary Kay CabotPlain Dealer Reporter
What better way to kick off the Browns' season of expectations than with America's Team, the team picked by many to win the Super Bowl this season?

"We couldn't ask for anything more," said Browns defensive end Robaire Smith. "Why not go out right from the start and see where we stand? Right now, with 13 Pro Bowlers, the Cowboys look like the best team in the NFL on paper. So if we even want to stand a chance of playing with these guys, we've got to bring our best."

The Cowboys come in with a nasty scowl after going 13-3 last season and then losing at home to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in the second round of the play- offs.
