"I've given my all to this city for four years, and I realize it will never be enough. I went to the Pro Bowl last year and resurrected this team from the darkness, and nobody cared... My biggest problem is that I actually give a damn. I'm always rushing back from surgeries and injuries, never missing games or practices. But through this, I've learned how to overcome adversity. I'm also proud of how much my foundation has taken off. I've been doing all this community service in Cleveland. My charity efforts will only be in Detroit from now on.''
-- Cleveland wide receiver Braylon Edwards, in one of the most ill-timed rants in recent NFL history, to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Ill-timed because the 4-11 Browns are having their most disappointing season since returning to the NFL in 1999. Ill-timed because Edwards leads the NFL in dropped passes with 16 and has contributed in a big way to the bad season. (In fact, according to Stats, Inc., Edwards entered this weekend with the lead in dropped passes in the NFL since the start of the 2006 season, having a 36-35 edge on Terrell Owens. Owens had his 36th Saturday night.)
Ill-timed because here we are, in the holiday season, when kids (and adults) in destitute inner cities have come to rely on the generosity of Edwards, and now he says he'll drop them like a hot potato. Some 8-year-old kid with holes in his shoes is paying for fans booing Edwards?
He's going to have to live with his "I went to the Pro Bowl last year and resurrected this team from the darkness'' line for a long time. That'll go over well in the locker room. It wins the Emmitt Smith "I'm a Diamond Among Trash'' Memorial Quote of the Week award.
Browns Insider: Crennel wants a chance to defend his work before Lerner
by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter

"Romeo Crennel anticipates he'll get a chance to state his case in front of Browns owner Randy Lerner to try to keep his job.
"He's the owner, and he's got a lot of different things he's got to consider and look at," said Crennel. "He'll make that determination in January after the season's over. At that time, when I get the chance to sit down and talk with him, then I can make my case. And he's going to have to decide whether I've made a good-enough case and whether he wants to stay with me in this job."
There's some thought Crennel could be fired shortly after Sunday's season finale in Pittsburgh, which wouldn't give him time to try to defend himself.
"He hasn't said anything to assure me that [a meeting] will happen," said Crennel. "But in the years that I've been here, we've always had discussions and I think we'll have a discussion and go from there."
Crennel said that if given the chance, he thinks he can turn the 4-11 Browns around.

Article goes on to discuss possible draft picks.Wednesday, December 24, 2008 1:57 AM EST

Coach Romeo Crennel and his players would never look at it like this, but in one way the Browns have a lot more to gain by losing than by winning in Pittsburgh on Sunday.
If the Browns lose to the Steelers and stumble to 4-12, they could end up with the fourth pick in the first round of the draft in April, depending on how the other bottom-feeders in the league fare in the final weekend of the regular season. They would draft no lower than seventh if they lose.
If the Browns somehow beat the Steelers, who are likely to rest their wounded starters so they can mend for their first playoff game two weeks later, they could pick as late as ninth.
Help would be needed to get the fourth pick. Not only would the Browns have to lose, but the Bengals would have to beat the Chiefs, the Seahawks would have to win in Arizona and the Raiders would have to pull an upset and win in Tampa Bay.
If the Bengals, Raiders and Seahawks are 2-1 on Sunday, the Browns would pick fifth. They would pick sixth if those teams are 1-2. Both scenarios assume the Browns lose. The Browns would pick seventh if all three lose and the Steelers beat the Browns.

Cleveland Browns expect to start Gradkowski at QB vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
by Mary Kay Cabot

BEREA -- Fourth-string quarterback Bruce Gradkowski will probably start Sunday's season finale against the Steelers in Pittsburgh because of Ken Dorsey's mild concussion, coach Romeo Crennel said this morning.
Gradkowski will make his first start since his rookie year in Tampa Bay in 2006, when he went 3-8. Crennel admitted that it's a tall order for Gradkowski to start in PIttsburgh against the Steelers top-ranked defense, but said he's been working extremely hard to prepare. He also said the Browns will do what Gradkowski feels comfortable with in the system.
It won't be easy considering that Jason Wright has been placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain and tight end Darnell Dinkins, the only experienced tight end who was healthy, might sit with a rib injury.
Browns Insider: Romeo Crennel, owner Randy Lerner to meet next week
by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter
Saturday December 27, 2008, 6:56 AM
Coach Romeo Crennel has talked to Browns owner Randy Lerner and has been assured that he'll have a chance to meet with him next week.
It means Crennel will most likely not be fired Sunday night after the season finale in Pittsburgh and that he might still meet with the media for his postseason news conference Monday.
"His [Lerner's] schedule varies a little bit, so I'm looking at sometime next week," Crennel said.
Crennel already has said he'll try to state his case for keeping his job. One thing he'll cite is the victory over the Giants.
"I think we can look at that Giants game and say if we prepare like we did for that game and play like we did in that game, that is what the future can be," Crennel said on his conference call with Pittsburgh media.
He said if he's let go, he'll weigh his options, one of which would be not be coaching next year and spending time with his grandchildren.

coastalbuck;1364831; said:E just reported the Crennel and the GM may be gone tomorrow.... You know we can trust them.....:(
exhawg;1364835; said:Crennel being gone is one of the most sure bets out there. Mort said that the Browns are going to make a run at Cower and the dude from NE. If they can't get either of them Savage might be back. Even if they could get Cower I wouldn't mind keeping Savage (in a lesser role if they are going to have to pay out his contract anyway) since he does have a better eye for talent than anyone else the Browns have had since they've been back.
