Browns Insider: Rift with Chudzinski's plays growing with frustrated Lewis
by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter
Sunday November 23, 2008, 9:03 PM

Lewis had just 10 carries for 58 yards and wished the Browns would have run more against the Texans.Jamal Lewis, who ran only 10 times but averaged 5.8 yards, questioned offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski's playcalling again on Sunday.

He tried to be diplomatic, but made it perfectly clear he's at philosophical odds with Chudzinski.

"You see it for yourself," he said. "The worst thing about it is how you prepare. You prepare to come out here and do your job and be the best you can be. Then, the most disturbing thing is when you're not really able to get out there and put that stuff to work on the field. You do all you can do and then it's just put to rest come game time."

Lewis said the playcalling leaves him "confused, but I just try to make the best of a bad situation and not blow up. It's something that I can't control and no players out here can control it. The only thing we can do is come in here and do our job."

Lewis, who fumbled on the Browns' first drive after a blindside hit and then had a botched exchange with Derek Anderson in the fourth quarter, carried the ball only twice in the first half, gaining 13 yards. The Browns ran only six times the first half, including four by Jerome Harrison. The Browns are 11-1 when Lewis carries 20 or more times.

Will he try to talk to Chudzinski about it?

"Been there, done that," he said. "It's his show. It's not mine. My job is just to do what I'm asked to do. I've gotten in a lot of trouble in past years, with my other team [the Ravens] doing stuff like that. My thing is, 'Jamal, go to work and do what you're asked to do.'"

Anderson was largely ineffective in relief of Brady Quinn.Asked if he's getting used to the light workload, he said, "I don't have a choice but to get used to it. I thought we ran the ball well when I was in there and when Jerome was in there. I don't know. I guess I'll have to go watch the film and see what the coaches saw upstairs."

This team is falling apart fast. Lewis complaining about the playcalling and in the same article Anderson criticizes Edwards and his dropped passes. Someone has to get a grip on this team fast.:!

Quinn rejects excuses for benching, says he's eager for another chance vs. Colts
by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter
Sunday November 23, 2008, 8:23 PM

Brady Quinn admitted he was upset about being yanked in the third quarter of Sunday's 16-6 loss to the Texans after his second interception of the game.

"Uh, yeah," he said. "C'mon, I'm in this game to play. After that last one, I didn't really have any inclination I was on such a short leash. The fourth quarter is where games are won or lost and I just wish I would've been able to be in there to have a chance."

Quinn, playing with a fractured right index finger, was pulled in favor of Derek Anderson with 3:14 left in the third after throwing picks on back-to-back drives. Both passes were intended for Braylon Edwards -- and Quinn discovered what Anderson has known all season: it's tough to win when your star receiver is in a slump.

But Quinn didn't blame Edwards -- or the injured finger --- for the poor outing.

"[The fracture] wasn't a factor," he said. "I'm not one to make excuses. I practiced with it all week and felt confident in what I could do."

He said he didn't think he was pulled because of the injury.

"I spoke with [head coach Romeo Crennel] and I think he was upset with a couple of decisions I made," said Quinn. "I hope the [injury] wasn't a factor."

Browns' Edwards hears (and accepts) the boos, but can barely believe his eyes (or his hands)
by Dennis Manoloff/Plain Dealer Reporter
Sunday November 23, 2008, 6:53 PM

Braylon Edwards looks in the mirror and does not recognize himself.
It has been that way all season.

"All I know is, last year I was one guy and this year I'm a different guy," he said Sunday afternoon after the Browns lost to the Texans, 16-6. "I've got to get back to where I was last year.

"I've been very inconsistent. I haven't been what I was last year for this team. There are plays out there that definitely can be made, and should be made, by me. I hold myself to a high standard and I'm just not making those plays."

Last season, Edwards caught 80 passes for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns in 16 games en route to the Pro Bowl. This season, Edwards has 40 receptions for 661 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games -- and the baseline stat falloff barely tells half the story.

Drops, more than catches, have defined him. He coughed up at least three against Houston, bringing his unofficial season's total to 18.
"I don't know what it is," he said. "If I knew, I'd have it cleared up. But I've got to go somewhere to get my head together."

As the drops mount, the boos get louder. Edwards has ears. He can hear.

I think if he would go to a different team that would help matters considerably. That way he can get his head together someplace else. The only thing is that his value as probably dropped so far that the Browns probably could not get much for him. I think I would almost take a #2 draft choice but I'm not sure if we can even get that.

I have been around to the point that players coming up from within the 5th or 6th round of the draft turns out to be a quality player who knows he has to work hard to make the team. gifted guys like Edwards, Winslow, QUinn and others who are drafted in the 1st and 2nd rounds all have those $$$ dollar signs and then it seems to stop there. "I don't have to try anymore - I have made it. Resting on your laurels is not going to make it happen. Edwards should have started thinking long ago to play hard when he was 1st picked by the Browns.

Cleveland Browns coach Crennel says Brady Quinn remains the starting quarterback
by Mary Kay Cabot
Monday November 24, 2008, 1:04 PM

Browns coach Romeo Crennel said today that Brady Quinn is still his starting quarterback and that he's not on a short leash.

"It's not an issue because he's the quarterback,'' said Crennel. "We like the things he's shown us. We need to help him more going down the stretch. If we can do that, we might be able to win a game.''

Crennel re-iterated that he benched Quinn in the third quarter of Sunday's 16-6 loss to the Texans because of some misreads and because of his fractured right index finger.

"Because of some misreads and my knowledge of the finger situation, I decided to make the change,'' said Crennel. "If Derek Anderson had provided a spark, Brady Quinn would still be the starting quarterback.''
He said he told Quinn he had not lost his job, but that Quinn perhaps didn't fully grasp it because of his frustration.

Si.com's Peter King reported Monday morning that Quinn was told his problem "is not just a broken bone near the top of the index finger on his throwing hand. It's a damaged tendon, which makes it doubly difficult to spin the ball with the kind of rotation he usually has coming out of his right hand. You saw that against Houston Sunday, in his eight-of-18 performance before getting yanked for Derek Anderson.''
Crennel confirmed the damaged tendon.

Crennel declined to address rumors that he's gone after this season.
"My future is that I'm coaching for the next game,'' he said. "That's all that I can worry about.''
I guess what is interesting to me is why was Quinn pulled during the game when for 1 1/2 seasons he has had to sit on the bench while Anderson has played some very terrible games including the 2 games that cost us getting into the playoffs last season. I guess my question to Romeo would be been the Browns need some spark during certain games last season:(

If you honestly think Brady Quinn is not trying any more then all I can say is that ... you are a jack-ass...

Crennel: 'Buck stops with me' despite Browns' unspooling

ESPN.com news services

Updated: November 24, 2008, 6:50 PM ET

BEREA, Ohio -- Amid speculation his job is in jeopardy, Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Monday he isn't worried about his future.

Expected to be a playoff contender after winning 10 games last season, the Browns lost their third straight home game and fell to 4-7 on Sunday following an embarrassing 16-6 loss to the Houston Texans. Crennel, 24-35 since taking over in 2005, was disappointed with his team's performance and said the "buck stops with me."

"I don't worry about it. I can't control it," he said. "The thing I can control is whether we win or lose. If we win, that improves my chances. If we don't, then that hurts my chances."

Browns coach Romeo Crennel has the support of his players, but management has become displeased with his clock management, play-calling and use of personnel.

CLEVELAND -- Browns coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage both might be on the hot seat, but changes probably won't be made until after the season, a source close to the situation said.
Both could lose their jobs -- or both could keep them. Crennel could go and Savage could stay -- or vice versa. Their seats got hotter with Sunday's 16-6 loss to the Houston Texans, leaving the team with a 1-5 mark at home, but nothing has been written in stone. Some of it will depend on how the team plays in the final five games, three of which are on the road.
Team officials have been unhappy with Crennel, who is 24-35 in his fourth season, including 0-7 against Pittsburgh and 2-5 against Cincinnati. He has the same regular-season record Butch Davis had when he resigned with five games left in the 2004 season.
