Clarett spilling the beans

LloydSev said:
Of course it should, by saying they can't be on University property. They should have to deal with the city to do their thing. But we can't act like Wisconsin fans. We do have more class than that, even if ESPN doesn't.
Just don't show up! As a matter of fact, stand across the street passing out fliers to anyone who is showing up explaining why they shouldn't lend credibility to ESPN by attending. I'd love to turn on my TV and see a sportcenter with NO fans.

The saga continues....

When is MOC going to stop blaming everyone else for his mistakes and start owning up to his decisions?

I have a couple of comments about this so called "story"...

I have tried to be objective and look at his allegations not as a fan of OSU but as a unbiased observer...

After reading his allegations and accusations, I find his story to be just that a story. All of his allegations were investigated for almost a year by the NCAA and they determined that OSU did not break any NCAA rules. In my book, that says alot.

MOC has no integrity, he is a young man who made countless wrong decisions because of his inmaturity and the people around him. Here is a kid who had everything going for him and in the span of 12-16 months, threw his future down the drain. I feel the motive behind this story is simply revenge. MOC blames OSU for his failure and if you are familiar with Mr. Geiger's comments early yesterday, he stated that MOC had during moments of frustration stated he would blow up the program and made a promise to cause the program harm, Mr. Geiger simply asked him to blow it up, but when his bluff was called, he didnt have anything to say. Now, over a year later, MOC contacts ESPN (not a highly regarded journalist institution) and makes allegations of money being given (doesnt name names), cars being loaned (accusing Coach T of setting this up himself)...I find that just simply unbelievable.

What is really going on here? Could it be that MOC craves the spotlight and the combine is just 4 months away and wanted some pub or are these allegations true? Either way, its another black eye for the university and a source of frustration for all the fans.

If anything, MOC has accomplished what I believe he sat out to do and that was to get his name back in the paper and bring out more mud for the national press to sling at OSU. ESPN only benefits from this story, increases magazine sells and ratings. Should they be held responsible for unresponsible journalism? I believe they should IF all allegations are found to be untrue. I am sure the NCAA has contacted OSU and ESPN and is in the process of investigating these claims, they have no choice, its national news, they have to save face in my opinion.

I believe if the NCAA comes in and investigates these previously investigated charges and nothing is found to be improper, then the university must act legally against ESPN and MOC. When is enough...enough with this kid? What is going to be the outcome of this?

Based on the individuals involved at this point and the information we know about the allegations, I stand fully behind Mr. Geiger and Coach Tressel and his program. Coach T has been a role model and is a straight shooter, I will be absolutely shocked if he or anyone associated with the university did anything improper.

I am a proud OSU fan and I bleed scarlet and gray, I want to say this to all of you out there, do not doubt our program, we set the standard for all programs to follow and in the end we will be vindicated.

Go Bucks!

The sad thing here folks is that ESPN is generating more viewers who are intrigued by the story, much like we would be intrigued if this was broke on Miami. In fact we'd probably have a long thread stating how guilty and dirty the U of M is.

When push comes to shove, ESPN is trying to generate ratings and revenue.

I'm a new member and a long time reader and a Buckeye fan raised in Ohio who lives in Colorado and has become an avid Buff also.

Alot of similarities here other than my 2 favorite teams getting bashed!

This has absolutely nothing to do with fair and unbiased journalism...it's about Headlines.

Every program in the entire USA has it's perks and quirks but there usually is no paper trail.

Nothing will be proven and everyone will be cleared but just as in the CU case, every coach is going to bring up all the allegations which will kill recruiting. Couple that with the Basketball scandal and tOSU has a real problem. The politicians will get involved now. They'll call it endemic! This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Barnett is a good man with high moral character as is Tressel. Barnett will be gone as soon as his contract is out or before because he won't be able to recruit to the standard required. This may also happen to Tressel.

To sit in a recruits living room with the family and convince them that tOSU is the school to go to require the highest moral fiber and integrity by both the coach and the school. Can we now do that?

Nothing short of Bill McCartney will be able to do that...he was a mensch as far as recruits and families went.

We all know that realistically no coach can control thier players 24/7 but tha's the way it has to seem. I hope I am wrong but it's all about perception!

I realize many people (like myself) have long given up on this thread because of it's size and repitition. I feel like what I have to say is different than most Buckeye fans but did not want to start a new thread.

The more I read the article and listen to members of the media and other fans, I am convinced there is some truth to the ESPN article. I believe that many athletes at The Ohio State University are given preferential treatment that pushes and often crosses the line of what is defined as "legal" by the NCAA. Anyone who believes Tressel and Geiger can moniter all the activity of 80-100 players and thousands of boosters, is crazy. I don't believe that Tressel has knowledge of specific improper benefits, but I believe he has to know it goes on. As long as he keeps himself as "ignorant" of the actions as possible, he believes he can keep himself innocent without hurting the program.

Let's face it, Clarett could loan a car from a Columbus dealership a lot easier than you or I during the national championship run. I think his summer job was set up with the INTENT that he would work for his money. He probably got lazy and no one wanted to confront him about it. I think the University has covered themselves well by forcing these players and employers to sign NCAA ethical practice papers. Realistically, some of these players don't have the affinity to books and classes that many college students do. Should the University turn their back on them when they have a future in the NFL? I realize many of these motives are selfish for the University and program, but at the same token...many players use OSU, not as an acedemic institution but as a means to the NFL.

That being said...I don't think Tressel or the University have EVER facilitated the exchange of these benefits during his tenure here. I do NOT believe Ohio State has a large scale cover-up nor do I believe these things are commonplace within the University. I do, however, believe that tOSU will do everything within their legal capability to help players out...even moreso than regular students. I also believe that while they try to police major violations or things that enter their knowledge, they try to stay ignorant of small issues.

Lets put this in perspective..this is not a problem that is unique to The Ohio State University. I have come to believe that NO university at ANY level is squeaky clean. I see little extra classroom "considerations" that are given to athletes at the small University of Findlay and have heard stories about other small schools having players receive anonymous "donations". If it happens at small schools, I question how much more it happens at D-1 programs and ESPECIALLY at big time athletic programs.

I hate that tOSU is being singled out in this article. I love the team and I guess I have always buried the thoughts of violations in the back of my mind. As bad as this sounds, I can deal with improprieties on a small level as long as they are not University or Coaching Staff facilitated. I also believe it needs to be kept as "low" as possible and, if discovered, the player and boosters should be dealt with. College athletes are barely more than slaves. Some value the education that they get for their talent...but these players still work their butt off and could use a little help. Maybe I'm way offline morally with this issue...but this doesn't hurt my opinion of the program unless we get put on probation because of it.

One last thing...I think that these actions are rare within the University and most players do remain clean and stay way from these problems. Every group has "bad apples".

there is not a program in any collegiate level that does not have incidents that cross the line... a collegiate athletic staff cannot take control over the student-athletes conscience and soul.. the student-athlete is responsible for that...

Even at my alma mater (not OSU).. I was surprised to see star athletes in expensive and fine cars... and living in places better than any other places my other college friends could ever afford... when I rode with them and partied with them, I knew these weren't athletic dept funded... As long as you have alumni.. you have this activity...

the student-athlete HAS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS ACTIONS... he knows when and what crosses the line...

The college should only be held accountable if THEY are ones that are knowingly enablers of this activity... or if they observe blatant evidence of misconduct... an inner city kid that drives to practice in a new Jag should raise questions...

I guarantee you, when Folanator (or any of the other OSU athletic schollies) played for OSU, they knew where the line was... it was then their choice to deal with it... and their responsibility for their actions...

And beyond the morality and ethics issue, I feel student-athletes should be paid a stipend to address this immense temptation...

You have to wonder what's going to happen when Clarett gets drafted and is on a team with former Buckeyes.

Talk about having burned some bridges!
again, not a problem here. he will be a raider :(

i would just like to question the local media for a second. we all know the local columbus media has their eye on tOSU football team and its not because they like the view. they want some dirt. this being the case, how could they have not noticed maurice driving around in a different brand new car every week? wouldnt that have raised questions, or did i hear something and misunderstand it?

Shit, I wish. The best I got was not having to pump the keg myself. :)

this also brings to mind a hilarious but yet semi-serious conversation I had with a close friend who was a World Class spinter sponsored by Nike... when the original classroom crap became public.. this fella told me, in 'jest', every Black American student-athlete 'hated' Mo because he was ruining a great secret of theirs.. he said him and every other Black American that took African Studies specifically took it for the cake-walk "A".. and this nimrod was screwing the pooch... my buddy said "and he needed to take oral exams? that's embarrassing.. it's easy enuf.. so what were the oral questions.. 'spell Africa' ? "... so Mo has been burning bridges everywhere well before this one...

Well- I guess this is good a thread as any- and I'm sure some other people have more details, but Our Pal Tom Friend was just on the Dan Patrick show....

Impressions:

Well, through my scarlet filtered ears the guy is an insufferable prick... and the motherfucker just won't admit that his story lacks any kind of tangible facts.

Second, he believes in his heart that the RB FKA #13 is a victim.

Third, he is insistent on painting OSU as an evil empire, going so far as to IMPLY, without verifible sources.... and at times admittidly third hand info...

That Ohio State intimidates their athletes, and said he had off the record statements from football players saying as much but they wouldn't come forward for fear that Ohio State might ruin their careers too.,

Implied that some NFL GM's had told him that the Asst coaches and strenght coach had given MC positive recommendations but that Tressel and Geiger did not...

AND.... AND... get this, that he heard from some of MoC's people that a couple days before the story broke that Tressel had called Michelle Clarret and threatened her... once again third hand information.

Other than that, it was just him defending the legitimacy of his sources and the same drivel we already know.

I'm sure others who might have heard it have other details that stick out to them.

All I know is that one of my really good friends is a former ***** recruit. He hasn't lived up to expectations, but we've been friends since his freshman year (my sophomore), and I've never seen anything that would indicate that he's getting any sort of special benefit other than what his parents send him. He lives in a dingy house with another former ***** recruit from the same year. They live with 5 other guys. If they're getting paid, they don't live in this place, trust me. It's small, dirty, and it's in a bad area. My friend drives a fairly nice car that's about 4 years old and he says he got for a graduation present. It's not a BMW or a Bentley or anything, and it's obviously got a few years of wear and tear on it. He's also asked to borrow 5 bucks for dinner and for me to hook him up with some cash if possible for beer money. People that are getting this kind of money don't need food money and they don't need beer money. He told me once he almost wishes that OSU was dirty, because he's broke a ton of the time.

I'll be happy to reveal the guys in PM if necessary, but I'd rather not make it a debate about why they wouldn't get paid vs. somebody like LeAndre Boone and Curtis Crosby. They would. I just don't want to blab about these guys all over the board if it's not necessary.
